Lighten up drumdude! No need to be so sensitive. I assure you that I would not make fun of your iron covers-- I would only do that to my friends-- yeah ball busting is what friends do when their out having fun on the golf course.

But the main point is that your analogy is completely wrong and goes into the realm of complete foolishness. Nobody said anything about beating the crap out of a car (or irons) with a ball bat or rocks. But clubs are tools-- just like a wrench, hammer, screwdriver etc. It strikes me as utterly preposterous to slam a club into the dirt, grass, sand, roots and sometimes pebbles and expect it to stay pristine. Sure you might keep the sides and back a little cleaner with covers, however the business end will still wear out.

Even on Golfwrx, where most of us are a little over the top about golf, less than 20% say they use iron covers. In the broader universe of golfers I bet way less than 5% of golfers use iron covers-- and they get along quite fine without them.

But like I said before, do what you want. No need to insult--Lighten up!

I guess I did fly off the handle there, but I find some of the comments in this thread to be completely asinine. I assure you that at least 90% of the wear on uncovered irons comes from bag chatter. I've had sets of forged irons in the bag for years that were in extremely good condition, even when I played almost everday (the good old days). It's not the contact with the ground that causes most of the wear, it's the metal-to-metal contact from clanking around in the bag. A little lesson about metals from a tool and die maker. An object cannot scratch or dent a metal unless it is as hard or harder than the metal being damaged. Grass, dirt, and tree roots physically can't ding a steel golf club, because they aren't as hard as the steel. You do get a bit of "brush marks" from tiny stone fragments in the soil, but those are even pretty minimal on a set with a good, hard chrome plating. Now rocks will absolutely gouge and damage steel without question, but contact with rocks is normally an unfortunate and unforseen accident. I really think you would be quite surprised at how long your irons stayed "nice-looking" if you did use iron covers. If you don't care, you don't care. I just don't understand all the flack for the guys who do care. And my apologies for the crude comments. I was out of line.

Funny, saw a recent listing, nice set of Razr X Forged Protos, listing stated, played only a few rounds, but does have bag chatter due to soft forging.......gee, would have used iron covers could have gotten a lot more

I just bought a set of 1025CM and 1025M from Scott and looking at the Bennington and Kahma bags for mine. Don't worry about resale since you can figure on used clubs being worth 10-20 cents on the dollar these days. So if you have the personality to take care of your investments, then get a nice chatter-free bag and forget the head covers and towel. Some guys could care less how they treat their gear and they care even less about your stuff, so follow your own instinct on this one. I have a set I bought used that have chatter dents, so I don't protect them, but new heads get protected. For me lately it's been head covers, and I can't wait to get away from them.

I use no putter cover, but all my irons (mp59) do have a cover on them. This means that the putter is still nice after about 100 rounds
(bought it april last year). My backup set has no headcovers for the irons, so the putter does have a cover..

I'm a no cover guy, I like my irons to have character... When I get new irons I'll actually hit extra balls on the range when I first get them so I get that dime sized sweet spot on the face I like to see. I use blades so bag chatter will happen & doesn't bother me since its not making big nicks or anything like that, plus on the irons I've got lead tape on it helps flatten it on there as well as really make it stick. The only time I ever thought about using iron covers was to travel, since I travel a lot I thought maybe I'd buy a set to keep strictly in the travel bag but a towel+stiff arm works just fine. If you wanna keep them new don't hit them, keep em naked...show the character of your irons.

Excellent points and I agree. I have 10 yr old clubs in fantastic condition because I take care of the.

I like buying clubs from people who take extreme care of them or do not play or practice much, but in my hands those same clubs will be clean but self supporting.
