Why put a protective cover on something you slam into the ground at 80-100mph over 65 times a round?
That's a ton of iron shots if you are hitting each one 65+ times a round. :)

By the way who cares if someone wants to use covers, focus on your own game.

I use them on my 3-pw. That being said I have a 6 month old and new irons aren't anywhere in my near future so I want my irons to stay as nice looking as the can for as long as they can.

Never used them on cast clubs...but with forged irons on the way, and knowing I haul my clubs in the back of a truck (have a bed divider, but the do take bumps harder back there), yea...covers will be used. I didn't spend that much money for a clean look at address only to be distracted by the ding on my 7i from my 60*wedge. Natural marks on sole you can't see.. Sweet spot browning, helps with alignment. I don't mind the fact they will pick up chatter marks from being carried on the course (they will come off at beginning of round) transportation is another story
And yes, I will take them off when sitting around the house to let airflow keep from rusting... If you know something has a good chance to damage them, why risk it

Use Callaway iron covers and I think they are great...I have used Club Gloves also and they are ok but do like to fall off some clubs.... chatter may add character but no one is going to pay you for it when you go to resell them someday down the line..but they will pay you for pristine looking heads...
That being said the real reason I use covers is that I am a fastidious preeeeeek about my equipment (actually about everything). :busted2:

I put head covers on my irons while they are in the back of my SUV. I hate riding around hearing the chatter noise from the rear. I usually take them off when I pull the clubs out of the back before a round.

At least you would be putting them on forged irons. I have seen them on cast clubs. It reminds me of the time I saw a guy using wrist wraps when he was bench pressing. I guess he was worried about the bar flying out of his hands....

OR he might've just had bad wrists? Threads like these make me see just how judgmental golfers can be.

"Kid's playing a white driver and has iron covers? What a poser."

It's saddening. And no, I don't use iron covers.

For cast clubs I don't think it makes a difference not having covers, but for forged, which nick and dent pretty easily, I think it makes sense to protect them from each other. I don't agree with the poster questioning why should you protect your clubs if you're swinging them fast and hitting the ground dozens of times a round. As a another poster mentioned, the main culprit of all of the unsightly nicks and scratches is the banging against the other clubs, not from hitting the ground or the ball (except for rocks of course), which is softer than the steel heads and therefore will leave little to no marks. Why do you think that the clubs that are always covered look significantly better than those without? If the ground is causing most of the damage then those irons would look like crap too, and this issue would be moot because no one would be using covers. Then there's the issue of value. In the used clubs market I would pay a lot more for clubs in excellent condition vs. a dinged up set. It's not even close.

Now with this being said I've tried covers in the past and went back and forth but in the end decided I didn't like the trouble it took to take them on/off or the look of them in the bag, so I ditched them. But I knew I still needed to protect them so I tried 14-way bags, the Bag Boy with Clip Lok technology, and even the Bennington LQO, which has a unique club organizer system that separates the clubs. But I still experienced chatter - some when I carried them around but especially when I placed them horizontally, in my trunk.

I guess I could use covers when I put them in my car but I don't want the extra work. In the end I've found Club Organizer clips that you place in your bag and allows you to clip and unclip clubs as you use them preventing contact. They seem pretty sturdy and don't appear to damage the bag so I'm pretty satisfied with them so far. I also like how they organize the irons. You can be sure, though, that even if I don't use covers I'll find some way to protect my next set of irons, which will be forged.

I have covers on my Wilson Staffs, but only because they were the first set I purchased brand spanking new. My 690 MBs go uncovered, even while in the car. However, it'll probably take the first big ding for me to just forgo using covers entirely. Also, the covers I have kinda scratch the iron head anyway, so its not mint. Plus like other users say, you're hitting dirt and probably wiping it with a towel, which is basically scratching the club some more.

I like the idea of draping the towel between the irons; definitely helps, and that is what I do now with my TMs.

No need to shout!

The G25's are virtually indestructable. If you get tired of the headcovers, you needn't worry about your clubs being damaged. :-)

I just got a set of 714 Ap2s and I even hate the little scratches from range mats. I did buy covers but they will only stay on for storage and especially transportation. They will go off during a round because, after all, one of the reasons I bought them is for their great looks ?.

I use them only when they are in the car. Once at home or on the course (I run a towel thru them for less chatter) they come off. But when traveling I really like having them on just because I tend to drive like an a**hole.

No way I could play with iron covers, and I've even tried in the past.

I have a super old Bennington QO bag. I'll never use a standard bag again.

Also, I laugh a little when I read that people say "stainless doesn't rust". In fact a few grades of stainless steel are susceptible to surface rust in mild conditions. But, a little polishing can correct just about any surface rust or dull metal.

Don't worry about other opinions. If you want them to look new you have a few options:

Iron covers

bagboy revolver style bag w/ the cliplock divider

snake a towel through them
Who cares what everyone else thinks. I can't believe how passionate people are about this. Some people don't care about resale value, some people don't care about things looking 'new', some people just don't care about their equipment (can't believe how many people just ride around without headcovers on their woods and putters). Don't let any of them sway you if you want to keep your stuff looking new. I've seen some other threads asking the same thing and I swear some people just feel superior to others and feel the need to make fun of others.

Some of the best guys I've played with have used iron covers. Don't worry about what your bag looks like, you know you have nice looking sticks and every time you take a headcover off you'll be happy with what you have.

I agree completely! I don't care what other people think. Spend, or save, your hard earned money the way YOU see fit.

Just picked up Cally Apex irons and debating on iron covers. This is the most I have ever spent on irons.

My problem is, I like to baby everything when new. Read in another thread here "I use the iron covers until I've decided that I want to keep them".

For now, will be using them. Who knows how long it will last.

I use Club Glove covers on my irons and can't say anyone has ever commented on them in anything other than a positive manner. Sure, they might say something out of earshot - but I couldn't care less about that. I'm quite proud of my clubs (nothing special, in case you were wondering) and keeping them nice and tidy is as important to me as 'character' is to others.

But the main reason for using covers is that the sound of metal knocking against metal as you make your way around a course drives me up the wall. So I keep everything in my bag quiet and let my golf do the talking.

Unfortunately for me, it has tourettes...
