No one has mentioned KZG? Find a good set of KZG Evolution irons on ebay and have them adjusted for your swing. I've seen near mint condition sets for less than $200.

If you need a set that conforms to the new groove rule, you'd have to be fit by one of the authorized KZG dealers, which jumps the price considerably. But most of us hackers can use non-conforming sets for another 13 yrs.

I love my Nike VR Splits. You can get them pretty cheap on ebay like right around 250 used depending on condition or golfetail has a bunch new and they go for just over 300. Cally X forged 09s are great too.

I just got my vr splits and lost some distance compared to the AP1's. The ap1s are horrible to look down at now. Did you or anyone else lose some distance with them? I bet the ap2s have 10 - 20 yards more distance. But the splits are really great with consistent ball flight but too much offset on the short irons mainly the 9 and pitching wedge.

Also don't the ap2s feel much hotter off the face compared to the vr splits?

my rankings...and i've hit em all. Didn't really want to include the high end stuff, cuz 99% of us can't afford them anyways.

I would love to include the Miz 58, but I wouldn't classify them as a cavity back.

For the money, if you were REALLY on a budget (200 or so) I would say jump on a set of Mizuno MP 60's, or Adams Pro Gold. They are both classics and there are a ton around for a great price.

Do these have to be specifically "cavity back" or is perimeter weighting enough to qualify? I have a set of each. They're ok.

I'm looking for some forged cavity back Irons. Any recommendations? Thanks.

If you're a lefty and looking for a great forged cb set for under $200 try the Mizuno MP-19 They'r more forgiving than some of the other mizuno's and soft like butter. You can usually find a few sets on ebay. I"ve played mine for about 8 yrs and I still struggle fo find a set that offers a compelling reason to swutch (and spend $500-800 on a new set)

I was in the same boat as you and I ended up getting Cally's RAZR X Tour's. I was surprised at the feel. They felt just like a forged iron but were more forgiving than any of the forged cavitys I hit which were, RAZR X Forged, AP's, all of the Mizuno's and VR Pro Combo's.

No Mizzy JPX Pro's? They have to be one of the easiest forged cavity backs to play and and feel really nice!

Razr X Tours are that soft feeling? I haven't taken time to demo them, but got my interest up now.

Best = Anything Japan forged, Epon brand by Endo and Miura are the best no doubt.
[/quote]

I truly don't understand this. Why does the fact that they are forged in Japan make them better? So you are saying that if i have a set that has a sole grind that doesn't work for my swing, BUT they are forged in Japan, that makes them better? I've played the J33s (combo, blade and CB), MP57 and honestly couldn't tell any quality differences (playability yes) from the Wishons I've played. The differences were in the head/sole design and not in the location of the forging.

To the OP, if you are willing to try components, hard to beat the Wishon 555C for a players type cavity or the 560MC for a low offset, extremely forgiving cavity. Both have very good sole designs with blunted leading edges. I think the most import thing is to find the sole design that works for your swing and the offset/head shape that you like and match to a shaft that fits you.

The higher end JDM forging process is outstanding compared to the OEM market. They start off with tighter tolerances, use more force and increase the number of times they are pressed. They are finally finished off by hand with very high quality control, e.g. +/- 0.5 grams, lie and loft angles are spot on. Saying all of this, Wishon stuff is produced at very high level as well, but made in China. So, you don't have to break the bank in getting good irons. To me, the importance of all of this is the consistency of the set. OEM clubs tend to have so much variation in them that people have a favorite iron. You should love them all equally.

In addition to all the forging, then you have to also consider the club fitting and this can really make or break a set of clubs. Again, you are looking at Miura, Wishons, Vega and so on. Basically companies that do no have a massive inventory problem, because they build clubs for a specific golfer and not the rack.

Finally, these sorts of companies do not have the same sort of pressure to come up with new models. They are more inclinded to keep models that work until that come up with something even better. In my book, such irons are a long-term investment and ideally you should look to keep them until for many years. This in itself actually makes them a lot cheaper than somebody that keeps swapping out their irons based on the new marketing trends of OEMs.

Titleist AP2s (710s or 712s)
Mizzy MP53s
WIlson Staff FG Tours

These three are in my rotation at the moment. It's the last (W/S) that may really surprise you. They did me. I bought them on a whim for cheap and found them a good match for anything out there. I still get amazed every time I play them, They look nice and have a super soft feel with decent forgiveness. Like a prior poster said, I'd try to get something less expensive to start to be sure you're in the right zone for your game. But really, you can't go too wrong with nearly everything mentioned so far. That may be why I switch them out so often....LOL.
