Great review! However, I still am not a big fan of that retro look for some reason.

I think potentially this could be a great club...I bought the 23 and 18 in the early frenzy and have hit some great shots with them BUT I do find that the flight is a bit high and floaty which I think is down to the light shaft and lack of kick through/release.
I am going for a Cleveland fitting where hopefully I can nail down the right shaft - if not I will go back to the old faithful Sonartec HB001 Matrix 8h combo's!!

had the 18 degree with 59g shaft and hit some absolute bombs with it I mean 3 wood length, but had a hard time controling it. I wanted a 23 degree to replace adams pro but was nervous so had not done anything. I am a confirmed hooker( just ask my pimp) and light weight shafts are not for me. Well my pro talked to his cleveland rep and sent a 23 TM4 much smaller head and a 83 g shaft and its a wonderful thing. Dont get me wrong I can still hit to the left but I have to work for it. Now rep is going to try and send an M2 with 83 g shaft hope this works a swell as TM4, well see.

I want the tour version as well. How long did it take for yours to come? Could you please post a pic of it? I really want the TM4 or TM2

 • 1 month later...

Just got the M1 15.5* today with the 59g shaft to replace my G15 3w. I've tried & tried to hit the G15, but I just can't seem to find the right swing for it.

Went to the range in wy work clothes & hit a bucket of balls with the M1. Definitely easier to hit than the 3w and just as long. About 3/4 of the balls I hit were shots I would have taken on the course.

With the G15, I was having a good day if I hit 1 good shot out of 4.

My one complaint is the stupid retro head cover. Does a grown man really want a head cover with a yarn ball on top?

Hey guys, I just pick up a couple of the Mashie hybrid tour heads with a Miyazaki 83x shafted it them an dthe head has NO OFFSET. Great clubs.

Cleveland Golf - Mashie Hybrid

Pros: A hybrid that is as versatile as it looks! The Mashie is the true meaning of point and shoot.

Cons: Some may not like the retro-raw finish. The stock Miyazaki 59g shaft may be too light for some off the rack, however an 83g version is available via custom order.

Bottom Line: Cleveland Golf gets two HUGE thumbs up for being the first OEM that can truly challenge the #1 Hybrids currently on Tour.

Look:

Obviously, the look of the Mashie is one of the first things that attracted me to this club. It's definitely different than a majority of the hybrids out there today and I personally am a fan of Cleveland's 'Retro-Raw' trademarked finish. At address, it frames the ball perfectly and inspires confidence.

The dual-rail design on the sole is not very pronounced yet it compliments the overall headshape thoroughly. Again, before I even had a chance to test this club, I felt like I'd be able to hit this from any type of lie.

OK, yes, there is definitely some offset on the new Cleveland Mashie, but to be honest with you I do not find it distracting at all. Maybe my eyes are drawn moreso to the finish, but I think it set up perfectly.

There is a tour model that will be available for custom order which has a smaller profile and less offset. A bonus for all the gearheads out there.

Performance/playability:

I will start out by saying that the Mashie has been the very first club to knock my existing hybrids out of the bag for the first time in years. Yes, I'd try new ones all the time, but would always come back to what worked the best for me. Enter the Mashie...

This hybrid has quickly turned into my "go to" club due to its versatility. I first started hitting the club from the fairway and realized how easy it was pick from such a tight lie. The ball jumped of the face and quickly got into the air producing a fairly high ball flight.

Next, I moved into a medium length rough and was amazed how effortlessly it was to get the ball out that fast yet still generate a nice high trajectory. The stock Miyazaki 59g shaft is a key factor in this, however it got me thinking about playing this on windy days. The last thing I want is a high ball flight with the wind howling in my face. Fortunately, Cleveland is offering an 83g version of the shaft with a slightly different kick point to lower the trajectory. This option will be custom order only and will be available March 1.

Finally, I took some time around the green with the Mashie and hit quite a few bump and runs. Generally, this is not a shot that I would typically play, but the control I had with such a short distance was unbelievable. I actually lost track of time while testing because I was having so much fun!

Feel:

Take this with a grain of salt as this portion is clearly subjective. The Mashie not only reminds me of a retro club, it also feels like one! Extremely solid with a nice 'thwack' at impact. One can obviously tell when a shot is struck solidly in the middle as the ball just seems to explode off the face. Toe and heel shots can also be distinguished which is key in my opinion.

Overall bottom line:

The Mashie is at the very top of my list for overall best club in 2011. I can assure you that this club will find the bags of many players whether you're a low-mid handicap golfer or you're a weekend warrior. And with a few custom options available, it proves that Cleveland Golf is listening to what we have to say.

Without a doubt 5 out of 5 stars!

Yesterday I tested a Mashie and a Mashie Tour Issue for the Cleveland Launch Squad. I prefer the retail version over the tour. The Tour had a different sound I didn't like very much and was harder to hit. For some reason I like the shiny strip above the face and the tour version didn't have that. It was very easy to hit. I'd play it if someone gave it to me but I probably wouldn't go buy one.

I pick up the M2 and M4 and have played a few rounds with them. I must say I love them. They are very long and on the money at the pin.

Just played my new M2 Mashie for the first time today and really like it. I have if with the heavier 83g Miyazaki shaft and it's an incredibly solid feeling club. My only issue is that it does look a bit closed at address and the grey old school finish is not my favorite. It may take some getting used to, but this is a great club IMO.

I know we are not one to keep clubs in our bags for long periods of time, but what are everyone's long term impressions of the Mashie? I haven't seen a lot of recent hype about it, but I am really intrigued to put one in my bag.

Love the Mashie , I have an M4 with the heavier shaft. 4 iron loft but plays 3 iron distance

Never got on with Hybrids, Adams, Mizunos or Taylormades - tried them all , all went left and I've stuck with fairway woods

Love the Mashie's trad looks , its not going left on me and is great out of all lies, finally I have a 3 iron replacement and will get an M3 to kick my trusty 7 wood out of the bag - I have loved that club but it just goes too far

weirdly one thing I have noticed is that my bag is suddenly feeling heavier !

P.S persuaded my club pro to get a few in stock - real sleeper of a club - i think people will love it

Let me just start this review by saying that I am a relative newbie to golf, at least compared to most of you on here. I just took up golf about 2 years ago, although I am in my early 40's. This year I decided I was going to upgrade my clubs from the starter set I had been using. To make a long story short I upgraded my driver ,irons, and fairway woods and have had decent results so far. The last thing really missing were hybrids. I really researched online and hit every hybrid Golfsmith had and narrowed it down to the Mashie and the Razr hybrids. I ended up going with the Mashie because of how easy they were for me to hit, although the Razr's were a little longer but not by much. I just received the M3 and M5 Mashies 2 days ago. I hit them on the driving range and they were absolutely perfect for me from the first swing. I have never hit so many long, high, straight shots in my life. I actually hit a couple of slight draws with these clubs which is unheard of for me. I only have a swing speed of around 84 with my Octane driver so the regular flex 59g shafts and light grips are just what my swing needs. I was so excited after the bucket of balls that I checked with the starter and got right onto the back nine. I put my driver in the car so I wouldn't be tempted to use it and off I went. I pulled a couple of shots left, but I would say 85 to 90% of my shots with the Mashies were straight and in the fairway or first cut of rough. That is unheard of for me as I am usually in the trees and/or deep rough after my tee shot. In fact it made it very obvious to me that I really need to work on my alignment a bit, because these clubs definitely sent the ball exactly where I was aiming. I do have 5, 7, & 9 fairway woods, but they are much easier to slice than these hybrids and from the rough they really want to get caught up in the grass causing the face to really open up. The couple of shots I had from the rough were amazingly easy for me to hit. The M5 is a godsend for me as far as the thick stuff goes. I ended up matching my best 9 holes ever shooting a 48 and this was after I struggled a bit with my putter, I had several 3 & 4 putts. Beginning this year I had a goal of breaking 100, and now I know I will. These hybrids are the real deal. I just ordered the M1 and overnighted it because I can't wait to try it out. I know it will be tougher to control than the M3 & M5 as it has a longer shaft and steeper face, but I still believe it will be much better than my driver. The M3 is very similar to my 5 Fairway wood as far as distance goes, so I am hoping the M1 will give me the extra 20 yards or so. I was hitting the M3 around 180 in the air and 200 give or take after the roll, and the M5 160 in the air and 175/180 total. Hopefully the M1 will be in the 200 range through the air and 220/230 total, I'll see though. I will have the M1 by tomorrow by lunch hopefully because I have a tee time later in the afternoon. I'll update this review after that.

Low and Slow for the Dough,
Rick
