New 2007 Callaway X-tour Iron Prototype Pics!

Recommended Posts

Not sure on the public release date yet but my boss received a set directly from Roger Cleveland 2 weeks ago, and let me tell you, they look and feel fantastic. He was told this was the first set to go to any non touring pro in the country.

There is a set of heads on flebay, although the price tag is high :D !!!

Just a little. They finally sold at $3,550.00. OOouch! :fool:

Although both Edwin Watts and Golfsmith buyers told me to look for them on FEB 15, Callaway yesterday in an e-mail to me said Mar. 15.

:)

These heads will sell. They are some of the best looking designs for a cavity back I have seen. Great to see Callaway take these prototypes to market.

From what I've heard from the Cally guys, is the graphics will change a little, but overall it will be the same as what we have seen.

I have not heard definitively where they will be forged...one little birdy told me they will be production forged in Chuo...just like Mizuno's. Hopefully if they feel anywhere close to the Mizo's, they will be a HUGE hit.

Also, another tidbit I've heard about them...PM will debut them in Hawaii....I'm gonna be tuning in very closely. Any wrx'ers in the islands?

Wow! Those Protos look awesome. So it will prolly stack up like this:

X 20 Pro Series=More Forgiving with slight oversize head

X Tour=Somewhat Forgiving with traditonal size head

X Proto=Less Forgiving, but still forgiving with even more of a traditional look

I just hope they don't try and add a gimick to them. Like a bunch of color or a strange looking insert in the cavity. Just keep them simple and clean and they will sell!!!

And make them in LEFTY!!

Only played one round so far, but I'll play a few rounds this weekend. So far, the heads feel great, more of a click feel, than a soft "Miura" type, but very crisp. I've never been a fan of PX's, and that hasn't changed with this set. Ballflight is very high, and I'm sure it'll balloon into the wind. Also has a ton of spin to them, as I was backing up 7 and 8 irons, which I never do.

I really like the look at address for all of these irons. Much improved over the X-tours with the really high toe and wide sole. These are definitely a blade type look to them. Similar in set-up to the Ping S-58's.

More to come tomorrow...

Not really sure, since I RAN as soon as these were handed to me!

As far as I know, they're a done deal.

OK here is the deal. The X forged Protos are entirely different golf clubs PERIOD. I am sure they are assembled in CHINA like most Cally Stuff.

I am trying to get some pics of the retail X forged, but the toe is rounder and larger or higher. This is truely a fact...Also the top line is not nearly the same as the Protos...So for anyone out there trust me there is a difference, Also the decal is raised or embossed? as the protos were silkscreened and you almost could rub the lettering off!

As stated before feel is definitely different....

But now for the X 20 Tour look out that is a golf club that grows on you!

Limited set made in the early 80's.

Acquired the set for $150 in 1992 and sold for a grand soon after--- should have never sold.

Came with light blonde persimmon woods.

Glad to see someone on another site liked the pic...Mac (MrParr1noid) posted it here last year.

Was told only about 100 sets made.

Teenie clubheads - did not feel so good but looked phenomenal!!

The new forged cavities are probably softer and MUCH easier to hit.

Here's some pics to compare the retail set vs the pics of the Proto's in the beginning of the thread.

Not really seeing a difference that you're speaking of?

Are your retail pics also of the 5-iron?

Neither my brother or I noticed the slight grind differences. The main difference as I said was the feel. Had the same set of both irons retail and prototype. Taped the backs up so he couldn't see which set was which. He had no trouble picking out the prototype set. The only retail iron he picked was the P. The 3-9 were definitely softer feeling in his mind. To look at them without anything in the cavity I think only the most descerning eye could pick up the difference.

I was told by a person who has some familiarity with callaway to try and get a set of the prototypes. His reasoning was that Callaway was switching from where the protos were being done to another facility because the original facility could not get the irons to market before April. He was told this was the facility that did the X-Tours. At that time Callaway's site had not come up saying they were bringing the irons to market on February 15. The facility they settled on could produce them in that time frame. He said at the time they would be forged by Endo who are headquartered in Japan. Do not mistake that for them being forged in Japan. Endo now has many affiliates in China, Thailand etc. His reasoning is not all facilities are equal. Some have to start somewhere even though they are overseen by Japanese quality personel. That was the only reason I bought a set of the proto heads ($2,300) and built them to match the early retail set I had access to. Both had PX not PX flighted shafts in them. The fact that he picked the proto heads gave a little one person sample credibility to the supposition that there might be some feel difference.

I have bolded the totally unsubstaniated reason this person gave me for preferring the proto heads over the retail heads so no one takes this as gospel

As an aside the price on the retails turned out to be $899.99 which I was charged and then credited when I returned them. First time I had ever gotten back what I paid for a set of irons after they were "used". Probably because they had the next guy in line for the advance set.

Dude, no offense, but your writing style is amazingly similar to Todd at BSG. :)
