New 2007 Callaway X-tour Iron Prototype Pics!

Recommended Posts

First ever seen...
I am pleased to show all of our Golfwrx members the new Callaway X-tour prototype irons. I would also like to thank the Callaway staff and Roger Cleveland for allowing us the time to talk golf and equipment. I was at the PGA yesterday and met Roger Cleveland and the Callaway team. I was able to capture some great Pictures of the new X-tour prototypes as well as some comparison Pics with them and the current X-Tour irons with a "T-grind" on them.

Roger Cleveland is a true gentleman. He went out of his way to stop working on a wedge he was grinding for a player to talk to me. I introduced our site and went on and talked about the new X-tour designs. He said the prototypes that we see here were not the final product. While he felt the head was close they were still testing with the players and it could go through a few more iterations before launch next year. He seemed happy with the product and it was apparent that he felt it would be well received.

The other Callaway Techs said the head was amazingly soft and solid to hit. They said the players that have had an opportunity to hit them have said the same.

I can speak to the shape and looks. The frost satin finish looked duller than the current X-Tour. The shape of the face looks remarkably similar. Just handling them for the photos I felt I had the thinner version of the x-tour in my hands. Similar sized head from heel to toe and the overall height, until you look at the width. As you can see from the comparison Pics, the new X-tour has a much thinner sole and reduced bounce. The topline follows that theme. Where the older X-tours had a beefy topline you will have a hard time finding this one.

Over the years we hear common themes around about a preferred design for heads for a cavity back iron. We talk about mild offsets, thin toplines, etc. Well here we are.

Bravo to Callaway for what looks like a world-class design!

Here is the 5 iron, then the 9 iron. Then comparison Pics with the 5 iron of the current X-Tour and the Proto followed by the same with the 9 iron comparison.

WOW - nice pics Richard. I really like the look of these irons. Only hard part is waiting for their release next year. Kudos to Callaway on these as they took the complaints about the first generation X-tours and incorporated it into the next edition. They look like a very good set of player cavity backs. If they can match the forgiveness of the 1st edition with the looks of these then they will have a big winner IMO. Man I wish they'd do some amatuer player testing :help:

Though much is taken much abides;
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

And people wonder why golf equipment is a sickness. These look awesome. Was thinking about scoring some S58's before the off-season but may wait.

Nice. These are the best irons that I have ever seen Callaway create. I think that the amount of offset is perfect. However, I would still like to see the topline become a little more thin. I also like how they kept the cosmetics clean and to a minimum. In my opinion it is nice to see a C.B. that doesn't have a whole lot going on in the cavity. I can't wait to see the finishing product.

Do we know for sure that these irons will be forged as one peice?

Is so, they got me :help:

I usually find that with a "players" cavity back the short irons (wedge in particular) don't fit my eye - the 9 iron in the Proto's look pretty good.

They are on my hit list :wave:

Thanks Richard - you continue to amaze me with the awesome pics you get. :)

nice pics. callaway is definately moving in the right direction with these irons. very glad to see that they finally thinned down the topline. that and the excess offset have been my biggest hangups with their irons. these definately look playable though...
