Torrey South or Barona 2 best public facilities IMHO in San Diego region....the 2 others down here less known (but tendency for maintanence issues are Carlton Oaks and Golf Club of California, both really tough tracks from the tips! Oak Creek in the Riverside area.

Oak Creek is not in the Riverside area. Far from it.

I think that person meant "Oak Quarry", not Oak Creek in Irvine.

I lived in San Diego for 18 Months, then Vegas for 18. I have lived in Orlando for 14 years (before that).

There is a great misconception about golf in SoCal, namely that it is great. Its not. The weather is fantastic. Best in the country. LOVE IT. But golf is horrible. Courses are limited and expensive. Many are in bad shape. Unless you are pretty well off, and/or belong to a private club, you are screwed.

I am pretty spoiled here in Orlando. Lots of courses. Great bargains to be had. However, if you are a local in Las Vegas, there are some nice courses there to, that can be had at a great price.

Of all 3 places to stay, San Diego was by far the worst (in respect to golf).

"Some emotions cannot be endured with a golf club in your hand." - Bobby Jones

My favorites:

Palm Springs area:

Classic Club (Usually too expensive for me, play mostly in the summer)

Escena (Fun course.... wide fairways but long par 3's....near my house)

Eagle Falls (always in great shape)

PGA West (another place that is usually too expensive for me, play mostly in the summer)

Rancho La Quinta (private course...my buddy gets me in here)

Desert Dunes (favorite budget desert track. Lots of wildlife, good links style layout (Robert Trent Jones Jr. design), gets very windy her at times)
Inland Empire

Sierra Lakes

Oak Quarry

Oak Valley

Soboba Springs

Love Rancho La Quinta!!! It was open to the public the first 2-3 years it opened before it went private and my brother and I would play there nearly every weekend in the summertime. Nobody was there and often-time we'd have the place to ourselves.

San Diego

Barona ($64 after 11 am - well worth it. Need to sign up for their casino card which is free).
Torrey South (not worth the out of town rates unless it's on your bucket list)
Maderas (getting pretty pricey now, though)
Steele Canyon
Carlton Oaks (If they can ever get it back in shape - great track but they've had bad grass for a while now).

Further north (Temecula/Fallbrook/Lake Elsinore)

Red Hawk Funny, I'm just the opposite on Red Hawk and Temecula Creek Inn from the poster above - I'd play Red Hawk 100 times before going back to TCI.

I really like the Links at Summerly - they have a burn going throughout the course, so you better know where it is before you hit it. Yardage books are a buck, I think. If you like minor league baseball, the Padres California League team (the Storm) play literally right next to the golf course.

Tee off at one o'clock and then go watch a ball game. It's hot, but in the summer you can do both for about 40 bucks total.

The Golf Club of California is really good too.

I haven't played Pala Mesa in years, but understand it's still a fun track.

I played Sierra lakes a few months ago, some time in the fall. Course was in solid condition. There were a few minor issues with some fairways being worked on at the time. But otherwise course was in good shape.

Pace was great, It was a Saturday morning at 8:00. I was surprised it wasn't busier. We never had a group in front or behind us. But you never know, that means the 8:06 group might have been horrible and ruined the day for everyone.

Barona is awesome. I also liked Salt Creek but it isn't near the level as Barona.

Even better than both above was a private course nicknamed "the Farm". It was one of the best conditioned and quality courses that I have ever played. If someone from the San Diego area can give the formal name, I would appreciate it. It was Rancho something but I can't remember.

All the people that come to SD and knock the golf don't realize that some of the nicer courses in the country are here... they just aren't public

People knock the golf in SD? Really? Where? I must have missed it

The Farms is fully private...all the members there are pretty die hard golfers and get vetted before they can join. The muni lay-outs here are rarely in prestine shape, but we still have some great designed tracks regardless. Theres only a handful of private course in SD that are both challenging and in country club condition. I've found that to be true pretty much anywhere.

Started playing almost two years ago and finally getting around to playing more courses - and getting my handicap down into the mid teens...

Loved Oak Quarry - amazing views.
Strawberry Farms has a killer back 9 and bfast deal in the morning- and is a really killer track.
Moorpark CC has three nines that are all great. Each has a really different feel. Great practice facility too.

Private:
- Bighorn
- Del Mar CC
- The Bridges

Public:
- Journey at Pechanga
- Grand Del Mar
- Barona
- Torey Pines

Avoids that are often hyped:
- La Costa (just not good)
- Temecula Creek Inn (goat patch, poor layout)
- Aviara (not worth price)
