ALL THINGS INDIANA GOLF

A "new to me" course report.

I had to drive to St Louis for a work conference Sunday and had planned to play Gateway National when I got there. Given the weather in St Louis I decided to play somewhere in west central IN as I drove out 70.

After a little googling and checking my Indianapolis Business Journal Golf Guide, I settled on Deer Creek in Clayton. For central IN folks I would describe it as similar to the back 9 at Bear Slide or Royal Hylands.

Nice track in really good shape. $39 got me 18 and cart and I played off the gold tees. I usually rate courses on the number of "good" holes vs "blah" holes. Overall i would say 12-14 good holes with only a couple of blahs It had a couple of parallel holes at the back of the property that were somewhat similar, but the elevation changes and routing kept it interesting It did have a couple of "trick" holes with weird layup requirements but on the whole it was pretty good. I would have liked a bit more variety in par 3s as the 3 on the back were similar lengths, but that is probably a bit hyper-critical.

If it wasn't 1 hour from my house I would definitely play it again. Definitely a good bang for the buck.

Went up and played Purgatory today. I really liked the lay out and thought the green complexes had plenty of interest. The front side was in decent shape but not what I would call good. The back was in some need of attention. I think I just hit them in the middle of a maintenance cycle. I hope the conditions are just early spring issues, but from prior reports it seems that may not be the case. I paid $45 to walk and that seemed a bit high compared to Trophy Club.

Purgatory was in really good shape last Sunday, will try to get to The Fort this week possibly. Anyone played out there this year?
Played the Fort last Wed. The greens were in great shape. The rest of the course was still pretty wet and the rough was overdue for a cut, but the fairways were very good for the time of year. I wish my home course, Stony Creek, was in this good of shape.

Can anyone give me a lowdown on The Legends in Franklin? Conditions? Layout? The whole experience there?
Thanks.

Not sure of its current condition but it's not a destination course. In other words, there's plenty of better courses in the Indy area to play.

Used to be really nice, but conditions are not what they once were. Still a fun layout, imo. They have 27 holes and are never busy. Think they've been struggling financially.

Play the original 18 if you go (middle/road).

Where can I go in Fort Wayne or Indianapolis to hit different demo driver head/shaft combo's outside?
Is Bobick's in FW an option?

Swan Lake Golf course has a United States Golf Academy center onsite. I believe they have a trackman as well and different head/shaft combos to try. They are located in Plymouth, IN just off of US31.

If it were me, I'd go to Brookwood GC which is not far from airport in Ft. Wayne. 10304 Bluffton Rd Fort Wayne, IN 46809

I know they do fittings. I'm sure they have Titleist stuff you can try and Cobra and I'm pretty sure other stuff as well. I'd call ahead to make sure, but they have a great staff there.

I'm in seymour so shadowood is the only 18 hole one in town so I play that a lot. Would like to hear an out of town review on it. Not that big of a fan but under new management starting this year so hopefully it gets better. Otter creek and timbergate are always solid choices. Purgatory is hard from one of the set of back tees. Southern dunes is a bargain course has been in better than good condition every time I've played it and it was 20 with a cart if I remember right. The girl working the bar gave me a free drink as well so that helps it out. Covered bridge and champions pointe are great if in season. Sub par out of it

You will like White Hawk. 36 holes, I would rank them in this order: B lack is best, Gray, Red, and Silver. I used to be a member there and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
We played Black and Red. I thought Black was solid and liked it. Red felt like they ran out of room and packed holes on top of each other. It wasn't bad, just felt very short and like a Tetris pattern. Conditions were decent and we only paid $30 so I can't complain.

An out-of-towners review on Shadowood:

It's a very solid parkland style golf course. Every time I've played it has been for a tournament or practice round right before, so the conditions were likely as good as they could get them, but I've always been impressed. The layout is pretty good and they route you around the entire property all day long. No gimmick holes, which is always a plus for me. Not overly challenging, though it can play tough from the back tees. I've played a lot of Indiana golf courses, and I'd rate it a 6.5 out of 10 for Indiana golf.

I live in Chicago. This weekend I'm driving to South Bend to participate in training camp for my hockey team. I'll be able to squeeze in some golf, playing friday at South Bend Country Club with a couple guys from my team (one is a member). I have a game sunday morning, but afterwards I'm planning to hit up a course on the drive home to Chicago. What would you recommend on the way? The Brassie? That looks nice. Any other (and possibly better) suggestions?

Thanks Kadin. How far a drive off the toll road is Aberdeen? And is it worth that extra drive vs playing a course that might be more on the way such as The Brassie?

If time is an issue then I would say play the Brassie. Of the two courses I rate Aberdeen the nicer course. I would say its no more than 30 minutes if that.

What about playing Lost Marsh in Hammond? You can hit that as you leave Chicago. Just take the Skyway and follow Calumet Ave. after you finish you can take Calumet to the roll road and head to South Bend.

lol, played Lost Marsh this past weekend! Quite the challenge.

I'll probably end up at Brassie because of the extra half hour drive. Don't want to venture too far off the toll road and take too much extra time since I won't be able to tee off till the afternoon anyway.

What about White Hawk? Is that any good?

Played White Hawk this past week. It was good but not much to really write home about. Conditions were a little decent. We played the Black Hawk and Red Hawk 9's. Black Hawk was very solid but I thought Red Hawk was lacking. IMO if it were going to put me out of the way I probably wouldn't bother.
