No problem, enjoy your rounds.

Well i could not resist and went out to Kizer/Clay today. We had a really good rain today from 11-2 so i was just going up to putt and chip but when i got there it was the most empty i had ever seen the parking lot. I said screw it and played Clay and yes the greens were not good but i just left the putter in the bag and enjoyed the course by myself. Walked it in around 2:45 and it was great. Going to try Grey Rock tomorrow if i can get off work in time to beat the traffic on this side of town.

Playing Wolfdancer Sunday afternoon and Riverplace Monday. Anyone know how the greens at WD are? Seems like they have been going downhill for two years. I also heard that the pros all left and went over to Barton Creek. On that note, anyone know how to get on at Lakecliff, used to be my favorite secret course, now it is part of ACC. Thanks!

I tried to talk my way into a tee time at Lakecliff a couple weeks ago and it's pretty lock tight unless you know an ACC member who will vouch for you. If you get to play it, tell me it's still as glorious as it was when it was open to the public! I miss that place...

Mid-year update. If anyone knows who heads our City golf courses please provide email to this thread. Sad that the quality of our courses is below average this year, as a whole I would give city course greens a 3 out of 10. $75 for Greyrock should get someone fired, place should/could be a $50 course if they cared to understand customer service & course maintenance. They need to attack the out of control trees that were never intended to be in play at 90% of our courses. The general attitude of the employees is well below average. All of these are easily fixable but everyones eyes are covered with cash because of the lack of supply in the city.

They do not have to drive very far to understand what they should do, Bandit & Delaware Springs are just an hour away.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi Guys, I'm coming to Austin next week and planning on playing next friday. I think roy kizer is still in bad shape from talking to someone at the course last week. Which muni's are decent? I was thinking of playing at Lion's. Or if you guys have any other recommendations for under $100 (includes green fees, cart, and CLUB RENTAL). Thanks!

Played Morris Williams on 7/20, and happy to report course is in pretty good shape tee to green. Greens have returned to acceptable conditions.

Played Greyrock this morning and it's in as good of shape as I can remember. Great improvements made in a month. A few dead areas on some greens but really minimal, they are almost 100% back. Rolling great today.

I think the headline is misleading. Making my way through the actual report and it seems reasonable. Lions is an interesting situation and I’d love to see a solution that keeps it around and improves it. I really like the idea of turning Hancock into a premier practice facility and par 3 course as I think the city lacks a great practice area and short course.

Golf needs someone in City Hall to care and understand how to make smart decisions that benefit the game & community. I love Hancock but it is always in terrible shape. We should bring in the guys who did Winter Park and let them go to work.

I know Kevin (Greyrock's new Head Pro) well. He will get that place back into shape.

Played Austin GC earlier this week and what a pleasure it was. Loved the feel of the club and the course IMO is a solid Doak 7. Factor in the club atmosphere and that Ben Crenshaw is there 5 days a week, according to the member who hosted me, and it goes up a notch. Love anything C&C and this is right behind Friars Head.

Sigh... one can only dream of what that course is like. Just remember me next time you're out there an "need" a 4th

Played several rounds out at Falconhead last few weeks - They've been preparing the course for club match play so the course is in awesome shape but native areas are grown out thick.

Any of you guys play out there regularly? LMK - thought about putting together an outing there for this group if there's enough people.

I'm relatively new to TX, can someone explain the punching schedule here? I've been playing golf at random places for 6 months and I've run into punched greens somewhere every month it seems. In the midwest, punching is generally in May and September. In Texas it seems like any month March through August and is not very predictable.

No one answer for you, it depends. Some places punch once, some punch twice a year. Usually end of July and first few weeks of August is a popular time and breaks up the heat a bit. You will see verticutting and sanding what seems like once a quarter. You also have the winter seeding transition at most courses, you'll play through both side of that transition. Price you pay for playing year around in a hot place that is built on limestone, it also freezes over a few times a year.

Coming in for the LSU-Texas game, so I'm trying to get a round in with some buddies on Friday, September 6th. We've kinda narrowed it down to Falconhead or Avery Ranch. Thoughts on either of those?
