I haven't played Avery at all this year but I can vouch for Falconhead - They had their club match play recently so the course is in really good shape. Greens are rolling quick but the course is playing tougher than usual as well with the rough grown way out. Don't think you can go wrong with either course.

Hey everyone!

I'm just starting to play again. I played in the 2-man Crystal Falls Scramble/Skins last night and had a blast. Are there any good $20-$40 weekend skins games in the area? I live right near Avery Ranch and love that course but I play all over. I am going to play ShadowGlen as a single tomorrow morning 9:20. I'm a 7-8hcp and I'm looking to find some money games.

Mo Willy punched in the last week or so it seems. Been a minute since I was out there, but dude I played with said they were in good shape a week or so ago before punching. Hopefully they’re getting a handle on them!

I actually found myself at Shadowglen this weekend. The course was in good shape and the greens rolled well, but I will not be going back. Second tee time of the day and when we make the turn, there are two groups on the 10th tee waiting to tee off. They had sent at least 5 or 6 groups off the back in front of us, which is completely unacceptable in my book. 1.5 hour front nine and 2.5 hour back nine.

I used to play at shadowglen quite regularly, but ended up having it be a last resort because it seemed like rounds always backed up around the turn and played way too many 5+ hour rounds there. I do like the course a good amount, except the two par 5s on the front which are kind of silly.

Yea I just played it Saturday and it was surprisingly in decent shape - greens rolled pretty well and fairways were nice. They must water the hell out of it cus it was all kinds of damp and some spots on the fairways were iffy to drive over on a cart.

Agreed on the pace of play... not the best out there.

ShadowGlen is one of my backups but it’s not in the regular rotation. They book too many tee times so the rounds are horribly slow and the marshalls are only there to find golf balls and get free golf. But the main reason is that their management is creepily obsessed with making sure no one books a foursome and shows up with less than four. I’m convinced it’s the only reason the course even exists. They got into golf business so they could fight an all-consuming battle against the disturbingly evil black-hearted psychopaths that occasionally cancel tee times.

So I wanted to show them a course they haven't played. However, I didn't want to make the drive from Round Rock if they were still having issues with their greens.

I stopped by there yesterday on my way to New Braunfels, and the greens look back to normal.

Played shadow glen yesterday, or tried at least. Had to begrudgingly ask for a refund after a hole and a half. Course is in horrible shape. Overgrown tee boxes, dead patches in fairways, greens punched, and the balls on the range are either cracked or dimple-less.

Drove over to Bluebonnet which was in really good shape, but they ran out of water on the course and when i called the proshop to ask them to come out and refill, they told me no because it was close to the end of the day and I had the option to bring my own water. At 4:45 on Labor day with temps hovering around 100, they said they were not going to refill the on course water and basically that it was my fault for not bringing water. Lmao. Not very inclined to go back to say the least.

State of golf in this city is so frustrating

Drove out to Burnet again and played Delaware Springs - continue to be surprised at how good of shape the course is in. It's a trek but if you're out that direction, it's a pleasant surprise.

Played Greyrock last Sunday, it continues to improve. It will never be worth $75 but deals on golfnow make it worth playing unless you are up for a drive to Delaware/Bandit.

Will be in Austin last weekend of September and trying to get out an early morning round on Friday September 27th, will be staying in Lakeway any recommendations?

Long shot but any members of Spanish Oaks or any of the must play clubs willing to host (can pm me)? I can get the pro at my club here in Houston to call but that might be a long shot, also any idea of costs?

Thanks!

Falconhead would be your best public option nearest Lakeway. You might PM toothysaw up above for possible hook up on Twin Creeks (private) about 30 minutes north of Lakeway.

Are any of these really that walkable? Falconhead would be OK I suppose. Avery would be a lousy walk as the trip from 9 to 10 would take 10+ minutes. I've heard Lost Creek is walkable and obviously Austin GC is, but other than that I can't think of many. Twin Creeks is a nice course but not walkable. Sadly in Austin, most walkable courses are the munis :(

One for sure (Lago Vista GC) and I think the second might have reopened (Highland Lakes), but would be wary of conditions. Avery Ranch not too far away.

Highland Lakes now goes by Lake Travis CC. I went out there on a whim a few weeks ago and conditions are not good. The greens are alive and really not bad, but the rest of the course is completely unkempt. The new superintendent actually stopped by to talk with me (probably because I was the only one there) and said the course will be dramatically improved this fall. So it sounds like he has plans, but I guess time will tell if it actually happens.

Glory be. Thought I'd never see the day but Lakecliff has re-opened to public play. Sounds like ACC is not going to exercise their option to purchase the course so they're back on their own as of Feb 1.

It's probably really far for most of you but if you live west of town, probably the best bentgrass greens you'll get around here...

I'm guessing it was too far for most of their members since most of them are Westlake residents. At a minimum that's probably a 30-45 minutes drive for them to the course and that didn't sit well with the members. I've heard a lot of them are getting BC and Spanish Oaks memberships... tough life.
