Would you give up golf for $1,000,000?

Yes. This should be a poll. Then we can see the minimum amount of money it would take to pry someone loose. Maybe the Tennis association would take up a fund!

i would take the money, then use part of it and take out a hit on the guy that made me give it up... then i would start playing again (would feel bad about it for a bit tho)

Not a chance. There is no challenge quite like golf. I love the fact that there are a million different ways to play each and every shot. I could never thank my dad enough for teaching me the game.

No. There would have to be at least one more zero for me to consider it.

No way to quantify it, but I'd imagine that I've made more than $1million off the golf course over the course of my life. Not from playing golf, but from the relationships I've formed from playing golf. That's not to say that I couldn't have done the same via other means, but golf has provided that avenue.

I say that not as a rich guy, because I am not. But I know that I have gotten jobs, clients, other business relationships, etc., all from meeting folks at the golf course. I don't consider my normal Friday afternoon rounds to be slacking off, but rather I consider them business development. Of the 50 or so guys who rotate through our game, I've done business at one time or another with well over half of them.

Nope. I played for the first time in two months the other day and I had a great time. When I'm done with grad school I'm going to be making 150-200k per year, so I'll keep playing

Is that before or after taxes? :D At 61, damn right! I made it 35 years of my life thinking golf was the dumbest sport on the face of the earth. For a million bucks after taxes I'd find another hobby like owning a few muscle cars!

This is an older thread which I participated in early on.

It still blows my mind. There are so many great things in life I can't believe folks wouldn't give up the game for $1m. That million wouldn't set you up for life but invested properly it would get you 33% of the way there, depending on your standards of living. I enjoy so many things outside of golf such as working out, dining out with friends - holy cow Id drop golf in a minute. Not necessarily because I need the money but because of where you could put that money.

My kid has a athletic scholarship but that could cover her through any future endeavor she wanted... grad school - medical school or her first house.

I could buy that 73 Porsche I always wanted and restore it. Finish my in-house music studio. Give some to the humane society.

I have a lot of friends that play golf. I have an equal number that do not. I wouldn't lose my friends circle.

Giving up golf would get you a million - and save you an additional chunk of cash based on lost time, equipment, travel expenses, greens fees, and all associated costs. So It's more than $1m.

I think if you were to really dig deep into the people and the responses you would find that those that would refuse the money hold golf at a higher level than those that would take the money. It is also obviously dependent on each person's financial position and age. I have played my whole life, but much more as a fun hobby in my youth and early married years. I probably would have taken the cash at 25 or 30. At 50 and with golf being my main hobby and the gifts the game gives with my golfing partners there is no way in hell I would spend the next 25 to 30 years without it. One of the life's greatest gift is having a passion. Golf, for many of us, is a passion. Passion over money any day of the week.

I think the answers would be different if $1 million in cash was actually put in front of people.

Golf is my #1 hobby. I've quit other hobbies to make more room for golf, and I don't think there is a day that goes by that I don't at least think about being out on the course.

That said, yes, in a heartbeat I'd give it up for $1M cash. And like others have said, I do well enough financially to be considered "well off" by most of my friends and family, but $1M would mean more to me and my family than golf does. I didn't pick up golf until I was in my 20s, and although the bug bit me hard, there was a life before golf. I would simply pick up another hobby (or hobbies) from my past and get passionate about those again, and be $1M richer because of it.

Yes, the resources for my family would be worth it alone. It's not just about me and my golf.

Golf means a lot to me and I enjoy all aspects of it - but it's a big world with many great activities - With the $1m you could REGULARLY scuba dive the great barrier reef.

..after this kind of activity golf would become very small and insignificant in your mind, very quickly.

Not trying to convince people to "see it my way" but placing the $1m level of value on golf is shallow minded in my estimation. The world is a very interesting place to explore.
