Would you give up golf for $1,000,000?

This made me think. A million isn't what it used to be, but it would definitely change my life for the better. I don't know if I could retire from work. Quit golf forever, I don't know. If you have financial freedom, but can't do what you love, enjoy, and have passion for....Are you truly free? Wow, you got me thinking.

How do people here figure $1m is not a lot of money? I'm not sure what ya'll are doing but while I'm not going to be leaving my job tomorrow if I had a million handed to me I could certainly make the financial side of things far more comfortable. If you invest that bad boy properly you could have some nice supplemental income coming in and you'd never have to touch the principle..or even better you just invest it and let it sit for next however many years until you do retire. Like I said, nobody is quitting work but it's a life changing amount of money unless you already have millions.

It's not really a lot of money is it though? At least it wouldn't go far where I'm living where house prices are high and cost of living is high, in fact both are not hugely dissimilar to London. As you say you couldn't leave work so for me I regard that as not being life changing. Life enhancing yes, but not life changing and thus not worth giving up my passion for.

wow this is a tough question, but a good one. money can't make you happy and you shouldnt ever give up anything you love. i'd have to say no. golf has given me so many fun weekends away, holidays and laughs with my friends.

if i said yes then i probably wouldnt regret it at first but on a nice summers evening or when the final round of the masters is on tv i'd be chomping at the bit to play or watch and would beg you to take the money back.

I live in the Chicago area, not the highest cost of living but not the lowest either. There's numerous things one could do with a million, a majority here could probably pay off their house and any additional debts so in that regard yeah it is life changing, not having to pay that monthly mortgage/car payment/student loans/credit card ect ect would change the way you run life. It could be invested and lay for a good retirement foundation, it could be invested and give you extra monthly income to work off of without touching the initial investment. Many options, for most middle class folks it would change things. Depending on age and situation it would change things enough to be able to leave a job, but maybe you could leave that job and take a risk on a dream career or starting a dream business... either way getting the million could be life changing but giving up golf would also be life changing. For me personally I do well, but having to think of the big picture in supporting my family and making sure things are stable and secure I would take the money as it would add that much more security for my me and my family.

No way. Financially it would take much more than that to give up not only a hobby but a love and a passion.

I could sell my house, take the principle and combine it with the $1 million and move to Hawaii and surf a lot. Golf would quickly become forgotten.

All combined I spend about $12,000 a year on golf. That includes tee times, equipment, clothing and shoes, and club dues. Not spending this would go a long way in other activities.

I think most guys would be surprised how much they spend on golf from real balls to range balls. Back before I joined a club I was spending $800/mo on tee times and range balls. $12 a day 4 days a week on range balls is $192/mo. Greens fees were $45-75 depending on where I played. Play twice a week and you're spending $500/mo ++ on greens fees. (yeah I know some guys clip coupons)

...this doesn't include equipment, shoes, spikes, real balls, etc...a $50 (after tax) box of ProV1's only lasts a month max if you play twice a week. 12 balls even if you never hit the lake gets scuffed up in 8-9 18 hole rounds.

I'll bet most WRX guys spend at least $1,000/mo. And that's a low estimate.

No. Money doesn't bring me happiness like golf does.
[/quote]

I can appreciate that golf brings you happiness - but it's a big world with many facets. I think we as golfers get tunnel vision to all the other great things we could enjoy with that 40-60 hours a month we spend on the golf course trying to find our ball.
