JJK947 - WITB 2018 - Under Construction

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to do a little update now that I've had some time with all the Titleist gear. The consistent theme throughout is yeah, I've hit other clubs that are maybe a little longer, lower spinning, more forgiving, better feeling, etc. But none of them seem to combine all of those aspects in the balanced combination that the Titleist gear I'm using right now does. Every club is just solid in every aspect, even if it's not the best I've had in one category. The driver is really the only club that I'm not really ready to say I can get the same performance as with other brands, for my swing of course. Had a couple chances to try the D3 and D4 with a couple different shafts and the performance, sound and feel don't really live up to the rest of the line for me.

915 FD fairway: Really impressed with how playable and forgiving this is for the address profile. Not quite as long as some others on the market but absolutely no slouch in distance. I feel really confident in this one and can hit a lot of different shots with it. Easy to change the trajectory on demand. Looks, sound and feel are top notch as well, D+ 80 is an excellent stock shaft.

915 HD: Should have in hand tomorrow but I expect it will be a similar story to the FD.

TMB long irons: These are really a game changer for me. These look like a lot of the players cbs on the market but are hotter and more forgiving than any of them by a good margin. Sure the sound and feel isn't reminiscent of a mizuno blade but I care more about other things in a long iron.

MB short irons: Not much to say about these and that's a good thing. They look great and I'm totally digging the pre-worn leading edge (no pun intended). Feel is different than the MP4's I am coming from but not bad in any way.

SM6 wedges: Really glad I want from 54-60 to 50-55-60. Dialing in shots from 140 and in has been much easier this year for me. Vokeys also have the best grinds in the business for my needs. I'll play shots with the face hooded all the way to laying flat open and I never get any digging or feel like there is too much bounce, just perfect all around.

Was between that and the ping ls. Never played a ping driver before so figured I'd start with the m1. Jpx was also very good but I hit it left a lot more than the others for some reason.

Great looking setup!! When I had an all Titleist bag, I didn't have Titleist drive in the bag either. Other brand drivers are just better overall even though the Titleist looks the best.

JJ - I went the same way you did. I was able to get really good numbers with the D4 and hotmelted it to get the sound more in line, but after seeing what the M1 has done, it really has an extra gear and misses are much better than the D4. I love the 915F as well, but I'd try the M2 fairway, you might need to get it bent flatter to get some of the left bias out of it. M series just really good. I definitely agree with you on the what you said about Titleist, overall just really good/solid performers.

Always had success with TM drivers, I'm sure this will be no different. Rest of the bag is so solid I can afford to experiment with the driver right now. Need to decide on shaft. From what I've seen the M1 is a little higher launch than the SLDR but not quite as high as the R15's. I've got a Fubuki J I want to try first but will probably end up trying something with a stiffer tip too. What have you hit in the M1 so far?

Thanks. Have to agree on the driver. Never had a Titleist driver in the bag for more than a couple rounds.

I was surprised that I couldn't get better numbers with the D4 than I did. Hit it outdoors at a demo day and then got one on trackman the next day. Numbers were solid but not quite what I was looking for, launch was a little lower than I expected to see. Actually ended up liking the D3 better as I'm not really a high spin player.

I'll have to check out the M2 3 wood at some point, it's getting a lot of love on here. GP is better than the Rogue for you in the M1? Going to try a few different shafts in the M1 and trying to figure out where to start.

I got lucky and stumbled upon the TX version, it's a really good shaft in the M1. Very smooth and stable and feel like it goes straighter the harder I swing at it. During my fitting I hit the 7X tipped 1" and it was good, but this one is better. GP is a good start, I think that this setup is better than the 125.

JJ, very nice set up. I'm not that easily influenced, but I did go look at a few 915 F/Fd after reading your thoughts. :) Always great to hear your input on clubs. I've been spinning my wheels so long on 3Ws its not even funny, but mainly because I've wanted one of these "hot" 3Ws to work. I need to take a lesson out of your book and settle on something reliable.

Thing about the FD is it's still pretty hot and low spin. I've gotten 2-4 mph higher ball speed and driver-like spin numbers from some of the TEE, Adams, taylormade, callaway etc. But I was always more erratic with those. On good shots I give up some yards with the FD. On mishits I give up nothing and they are closer to the fairway. Going to be playing some of the state amateur stuff this year so chasing the longest 3 wood doesn't really help me with that. It was fun when I was playing for nothing though. I'll be keeping an eye on your set up, especially driver/3wood shafts. That's pretty much the last open area for me.

I can tell you now that the driver shaft will either be a Speeder 6.2 TS or a GD DI/BB, in the standard Fly Z. I need something I can load consistently but still with some stability. The best 3W shaft for me is still a Fubuki it seems, which is why I've kept my old clubs around.

So, the M1 is out?

Had one coming but arrived in less than satisfactory condition. Going to use the return transaction time to hit some more drivers as some others have caught my eye recently. Saw you got rid of the Ping LS?

Yeah, the sound and feel were a nuisance. That, and I like a more open head and the LS just wouldn't adjust any further ("open" setting looked square).

JJ, did you get to try the Srixon z745 driver?

Maybe a Yonex?

Hmmm missed this from before. Eric and I made the rounds at the demo day to all the tents after you left. Ended up hitting a couple of the Srixon drivers. Nothing really stood out too much, they looked good, felt good, nice flight, etc. Just very good drivers.

That yonex you have is probably one of the cooler clubs I've seen but at 380cc I'm not sure how practical it would be for me on a regular basis. I'm a huge fan of their tennis racquets so maybe there's something in that?

I ended up picking up a 915 really cheap so I'm going to sue that as a control while I try out other stuff. Callaway XR 16 Sub Zero is really intriguing.

Anything new for you coming? Signature looks pretty similar to what you had when we played other than the woods.

No worries. That eZone came in larger cc's too, with the 380 being the smallest. BladeHunter and I worked out an exchange for him to get the Yonex and me to get a set of PX 6.5 satin pulls for my backup Mp-33's. I've tried some other sticks since the LS. Most recently I've been switching between a 12 degree tour issued SLDR 460 and a 9.5 R15. Both set completely open (they launch the same), and interchanging between a Black Tie 6x and a Diamana S+. I kind of like the R15 better, but it still doesn't significantly outperform the EZ/Speeder setup I have nor the Mp-650/Grafalloy Blue.

I've been practicing a lot lately and have gotten a little swing speed back, along with more control, so i think I will revisit the issue next month when I've been playing more.

Just wanted to do a quick update for this year. Titleist bottom end of the bag is staying from last year. No reason to change or try to improve current setup. Vokey -> MB -> Tmb is as solid as it gets in my opinion.

Woods will be as shown below, tour issue M1 440 and M2 Deep Face. Also have a 9.5 M2 to throw in the mix. Will see how they are after the snow from this storm melts. :angry22:

Shaft in the 3 wood will be Speeder 7.3 TS. Loft is measured about 14*, will be looking for another DF or a 17' M1 to play at around 17.5-18ish for a 5 wood.

Shafts I have for the driver:

-Speeder 6.3 TS X

-ATMOS Black 6X

-Rogue 125 MSI 70 TX

-Tour AD GP 6X
