Pulling PING Shafts - any tips?

5hort5tuff

Recommended Posts

So i have a set of Ping G10s, look to be factory installed AWT shafts.

I'm trying to pull the shafts to cut them down and add some weight.

As it turns out, PING epoxy seems to be pretty strong. My usual heatgun/torch just wont do the job. I should also mention i dont have a shaft puller.

I'm mainly concerned about ruining the finish on the iron heads . I've seen a few poorly done pulls where the hosels turn gold.

Any help?

Ping irons are crazy tough with just a heat gun. I've used a rubber mallet in the past with some success. You mount the iron in your puller and hit the iron head to try and get it to spin on the shaft and loosening it up

You can weight the heads with lead powder and a cork. No need to pull the shafts. If you insist, get a torch and heat the hosel for about 20 seconds. Keep the flame moving. If you get some color on the hosel, clean it off with Bar Keepers Friend.

Reshafting Ping's is a real pain in the butt (my opinion). You need to make sure 100% of the epoxy is removed inside the hosel bore. The bore necks down at the very bottom, so you need to slam the head down onto the shaft to get it fully seated down into the shaft.

I've done a few sets and have struggled with noise from the shaft/head joint. Read about the trials and tribulations here if interested... I've also pulled ping iron heads with just a heat gun. It doesn't happen quickly, but it can work. I didn't time it, but it took a few minutes (3-4?) of concentrated heat per head.

The normal "reshafting" problems shouldn't be an issue if you're going to re-use the same shafts (at least that's the case with the ping graphites - only assuming that it's the same with the steels).

With Pings enough heat has to be applied, keep the torch/heat gun moving. They can be a bugger. To remove I use the ol' manual method of sticking the head between my feet and twisting the grip end till it comes loose (only steel shafts). I have done dozens of Pings this way. If you happen to discolor the hosel (or even if you don't) buy a can of Bar Keepers Friend and apply with a small brush. I use an old tooth brush. It makes any Ping iron head look nearly brand new and removes any heat discoloration(within reason). Highly recommend.

The finish on Ping irons is very tough. I use a propane torch and have not had any problems. One thing to keep in mind is that you need a collared ferule to properly reshaft them - otherwise it is very difficult to get the shaft centered. Ping uses as special ferule - you can purchase aftermarket ones from Golfsmith.

Agree for i20 and S56, but not G10's, which doesn't use ferrules.

To keep the shaft centered on my G10's I used two wraps of fiberglass drywall tape around the tip. Slather the epoxy both inside the hosel and completely impregnate the glass tape. Works great to center the shaft and help fill the large gap between the shaft and hosel wall.

I have a Mitchell shaft puller and have still have had to put a torch on the for 15 minutes to break the epoxy. If you get any yellowing at all just run by a hardware store and pick up a tube of Flitz metal polish. It will remove any yellowing in seconds.

Yep-- takes more heat to loosen. You don't have much chance without a puller.

20-30 seconds with a propane torch and the head will pull off easily with almost no effort.

Update: I've tried some of the suggestions, but I hang got the bar keepers friend yet, so I didn't want to torch it for too long just yet.

I've pulled shafts on some old Eye 2 BeCu's and they took a long while, in the 3-4 minute range, and I never had any trouble with discoloration. When I tried to pull some graphite shafts, I ended up at my local shop so they could use a high-end shaft puller.

If they are steel shafts you don't have to remove the heads to cut them down or add weight . Ping shafts are taper tip and if you tip cut the shafts will no longer fit into the hosels! To add weight you remove the grip and put a measured amount of lead or other powder and top the powder with a cork rammed into the shaft to hold the powder in place. For those who use Bar Keepers Friend to remove heat caused discoloration there is a much better cleanser called Cameo Aluminum and Stainless Steel Polish and Cleanser. Get it in the supermarket cleanser dept. Sprinkle it on a wet cloth, wipe it on and rinse it off with water! Can be used to clean up stainless steel heads that don't have heat discoloration too. It is great on stainless steel sinks,
cookware and bakeware too!

Cost is about $2 for a lifetime supply!
