Walking through putting lines

Let this be a lesson not to use a greenish colored ball marker BTW. I played with a fellow recently who used such a ball marker and it was about the size of a penny. An older lady we had been paired up with us and who had asked us to help her follow the flight of her drives as her sight was not what it once was accidently stepped on his line multiple times because she had no idea where his ball mark was. He was not pleased but he shared some responsibility in the situation. I could barely make out his mark as well. Frequently I thought it was a blemish on the green.

Speaking of which... don't use pennies either. Worn/dark copper generally blends in with the green.

I'm 44 and I refuse to wear perscription sunglasses when playing (left eye is worse than the left, so there's a slight difference in depth perception when I do). I'll know the general area where the ball goes, but after 150ish yds, it all starts to blur just enough to lose sight.

You'll probably get a kick out of this article:

http://www.golfdiges...ay-marking-ball

A couple of the paragraphs:

Ball markers come in all sizes and shapes. A dull penny is a safe choice. Use of a tee, though allowable, will likely raise eyebrows, as will the use of a large casino chip. Shiny coins are regarded as taboo by some anal souls, and for other folks, size matters: In the 1996 U.S. Senior Open, Tom Weiskopf blew a mental fuse in the first round because his fellow-competitor used a gleaming quarter as a ball marker. Shocking!

If I recall correctly (it's not in the article) - Weiskopf told him to use a dull penny instead!

It's kind of humerous to see the various things that set players off. One thing I can't stand is players who are careless around the hole with their steps (scuff marks), or with their putter (dents from leaning or damage to the hole; i.e., some use the putter to remove the ball from hole), or just careless with the flag and do damge to green or cup edge. Walking through the line doesn't bother me, but I would prefer that it is done away from hole because the ball should be dying in pace near the hole and therefore any imperfections in this area complicate things. I often wave a guy through who needs to mark if I am a long way from the hole. To save him some steps and for pace of play reasons as well.

also:

Creative ball-marking and replacement, real or alleged, is extremely rare at the highest levels, but there've been a couple of high-profile players over the years who've been branded -- fairly or not -- as cheaters. Normally it takes a pattern of sloppy marking to be challenged, not an isolated incident. Dave Marr told me a story of playing with Jack Nicklaus and another player for the first two rounds of a tour event. Jack didn't appreciate the manner in which Player No. 3 was marking/replacing his ball on the greens. So after the first round, Jack told the player, "Tomorrow, each time you bend down to mark and replace your ball, you'll see a pair of white golf shoes: mine."

I just tell them that people have been walking around this green all day anyway.

Your statement is true...but "I'm sorry" is a better answer.
No, I say that as the person who's line has been stepped in. It's a way to let the person know that I am not taking it too seriously.

You be trolling. You have to be.

It's the lead character in a little known golf movie called Caddyshack.

By "little known golf movie" he means "the most popular, most quoted golf movie ever."

Kind of like saying, "The little known professional golfer called Tiger Woods."

Yeah, right. If Noonan was the main character, how come I never hear any quotes or catch phrases from Noonan?

Legend has it the Al Czervik character was going to be basically a walk-on with few lines and little screen time. Once Rodney showed up on set and starting doing his thing they just let the cameras roll while he stole the show.

Accidents happen, I let those pass

Repeated infractions by a character who I like to call "Mr Discombobulated" has to be called out

Two days ago, Fall money scramble. Playing in 8-somes.

This gent has stepped on our line 3 times in 15 holes, he has been golfing forever and clearly doesn't pay attention. His pro called him out on one infraction

I called him on his fourth breach. It was too much. He came up beside our group and literally took 4 steps directly on our line while walking to the hole. He was not crossing our line but effectively paralleling it. I had never seen that in 33 years of golfing

I said "hey, let's not try to get 6 steps on our line on one green". He was horrified and based on his reaction he was clueless to what he was doing ... it was very strange

Who can be that out of it? There is only one other line to avoid on every green and it is marked with a giant white poker chip

I like the guy who asks you where your mark is, carefully walks up near the cup where his ball is, takes an unnatural stance to show he's being careful to avoid your line, but rather puts one of his unnatural feet directly in your line as he sinks his one-footer.

Am I the only person who has seen this guy?

While you may not have liked the scene depicted, I think you deserve to give it a chance. My golfing attire is base completely on Al Czervik. The film literally changed my life.

It's ok to say you were too young. We all were too young at points in our lives.

a) If you were too young, and you like "non-Shakespearean" comedy, you may find it funny.

b) If you were not too young, I'm betting Saturday Night Live and funny movies weren't it. When SNL was in it's heyday, you had a movie that has many of the SNL regulars... IIRC, it was one of the 1st to do so, along with Blues Brothers (both 1980).

Either way, having missed them, and if you like funny movies, I suggest picking Caddyshack up on Netflix if you have the means.

Funny (or not)- we put on SNL on Saturday night as nothing else was on. After the two minutes we could stand it, we switched off. We just shook our heads and realized the target audience is probably 35 or so years younger than us (or more). So yeah, in 1980 both them probably did tickle the funnybone as over-the-top. Now, maybe more just nostalgia smiles if at all. (sigh)
