The Ultimate Small Blade Putter - Complete my dream bag!

Recommended Posts

Much like my irons, I like small blade putters that remind me that I'm taking a sliver of metal and knocking a ball into a hole. One of my front runners is the Miura KM008. I like that it's a very simple blade design, and the the blade length is very short, while at the same time has the substance of a 350 gram head. It has a similar appeal to the Miura irons...yeah they're small, but unless you totally whiff, there will be substantial mass behind the impact. Hence, I'm building a set of Miura CB57's.

That said, when it comes to putters, I like the idea of supporting the more artisan builders like Byron Morgan, Machine, TP Mills etc. I like running into fanatics and having a fun convo about craft equipment while at the same time my father-in-law (and wife!) has no idea I dropped ~$800 on a putter! Attached are a couple pics of putters that appeal to me. One thing that I have particularly enjoyed that the KM008 doesn't have is a sound slot.

BOTTOM LINE: Do I buy the Miura KM008 or is there a more awesome alternative? Note that I'm looking for a long-term gamer, but not a piece of art for my wall so let's keep any suggestions below $1,000. Suggest away!!

So let's say I love the shape of Miura KM008 and everything I've heard about the feel of that putter (small but with a lot of substance), and that I'm budgeting $500-750 for a long-term gamer. In the name of supporting the artisan builder, and of having something uniquely mine, could I trust Morgan Byron to re-create roughly that same shape and feel (maybe softened slightly with a sound slot) and with a sexier finish? In my mind, I'm picturing something shaped somewhere between the KM008 and a Byron Captain Morgan. Byron has some finishes that I really love. Attached are 4 pics I've gathered with elements I like/love in various BM putters.

So, do I simply drop the $500 on the trusty Miura?

Or do I create something special with BM? My one thought with the BM is that I would avoid stamping my initials in it so that I could sell it on if need be. Anyone know roughly what BM charges for a Captain Morgan style head?

No doubt you should get something custom for that price range. Why have a putters thousands of people have when you can have your own, fully custom, magical, stamping, weight, finish, etc etc for the same cost..

You could go with a Kari Lajosi putter, which in all likelihood would keep you at the bottom of your proposed budget and it's all custom. Dude is awesome!

I totally agree. I'm as willing as anyone to pay up for unnecessarily high-end equipment -- i.e., I'm currently building two sets of Miura Irons, even though I'm obviously gaining no meaningful advantage (from a scoring standpoint) over irons from Titleist, Mizuno etc. While I think Scotty makes some great putters for $350, I always have to laugh when I see the same exact Anser style Newport putter with "Circle T" or "Prototype" stamped into it selling for $10K. If I do decide to delve into $500+ realm for a putter, I want something that the company owner / master craftsman put his heart and soul into, and I want to know I'm supporting that guy who decided to focus on a passion for building clubs one at a time even though it's not exactly the most lucrative field. So if I drop north of $500 on a putter, I'll be choosing from the likes of Byron Morgan and/or Lajosi.

I have a byron bombora blade that I had byron make a little shorter heel to toe and a little taller in the face (similar to the km), i had a Km 350 and couldn't stop pulling putts, ended up selling it. The byron is money and one of 5 to see bag time this year.

Commitment FTW. Pmpin' ain't easy? Shoot, ho'in ain't easy!

In all seriousness, I would be looking at a Lajosi or Byron; some of the Kari's handmade 8802-style putters look awesome and I would rate his capabilities in terms of milling and finishes as anyone out there. I bet Lamont could also make you exactly what you want.

If you're looking at OTR, I'd go either Bettinardi BB2 (huge variety of these out there) or Cameron American Classic VII.

I got a KM008.

Had no intentions, had no desires to buy one but after about 5 rolls, I was sold. Still dialing in grip and lie. But it is a helluva stick.

Want to eventually add a KM007 and KM350 to the stable, but I want Mr. Miura to do custom work on both so it may be some time before it happens.

Call LaMont and have him build you a custom mini. That's what I did. Should fit in with my 1957s perfectly.
