Oldie - Titleist 735 CM Irons

I've been scouring data and specs on the best of forged players irons from the past up 'til now, and these look like just about the best compact forged offering in the last 20 years. Super low CoG, decent MOI and tolerable top line with minimal offset. Are these things as good as the data suggests they should be?

Who remembers these, I'm really thinking about snagging a set to test.

Loved these 735 irons. Incredibly underated. First real combo set I can remember. Great looking clubs and mid/long iron cavity backs were nice and foregiving. Back in the day actually switched from MP32 to play these. Still have a set and could play them any day. Prefer the chrome finish version to the stainless version.

Another good older iron to try is Mizuno MP64 although that may not be as forgiving in the longer irons as the 735 and the PW is fugly...

Absolutely great irons sorta a hidden classic. I have never played those but have hit them. Good QC and metals back in those days

If you look at the VCOG value on Maltby, it's hands down the lowest actual and lowest adjusted(or "real" as he puts it), save for a few fugly hybrids and the likes of the Ping G2. I just picked up some of the TW VR mb's, and while they're not for the faint of heart, they play much easier than I expected. I might be a blade/player convert yet!

Make sure to grab the chrome ones (carbon steel) and not the stainless. Way different feel.

I picked up a set of the stainless ones in fantastic condition with UST 115 Tour graphite shafts last fall. Using them as my primary set now as I’ve had multiple shoulder surgeries. While I think my set’s swingweight is slightly low, they are a really solid, especially the short irons. I agree that the chrome ones probably have a better feel; however, I absolutely hate plating wear (my usual sets are forged gunmetal Macgregor combos) and specifically wanted stainless.

One of my favorite sets ever, not fond of many combo sets. These and the Cobra S3 pros actually get it correct, imo.

My friend still has them in the bag since they came out and has no intention of ever replacing them. He's actually looking for replacement heads because his grooves are so worn lol.

I played a set if the stainless for like 7 years, amazing irons and probably one of the best all time combo sets. The 8-9-PW musclebacks were compact and could work the ball great.

Honestly wish I still had a set.

They were a superb set of clubs. I got a loan of some for a week or so a few years back when I was waiting on my 990B’s being shafted and man, it was hard to give them back at the end of the week.

Two sets of irons I've regretted selling over the last few years. Srixon 745's and Titleist 735 cm's. The Srixon I didn't get anywhere near what I thought they were worth and the 735's I got more than expected but fell into the trap of all the new stuff out is sooo much better. Idiot.

So i hit my 735s at the range today. Fitted with KBS Tour S+. They felt awesome and performance was fine. Also hit my Muira 501s. Have not hit either of those for years. Preferred the 735 CM.

I believe the 731s predated the 735s. Those were that Phil set and lefty only. I would have liked to try these in right handed (especially the 6 and 7 irons) and compare to the changes we see in the 735s.

Just found a set on CGPO in Average condition if anyone wants to take a gamble. I have a set of these that I use to mess around with, wishing I was good enough to use them as they are very good looking. They are a "good" condition set from global golf. Ended up trading in a Rogue 4 wood for them straight up.

Because of this thread, I just picked up a nearly pristine 4-PW set of the chrome 735 CM's from eBay for an absurdly low price. The S300's are too heavy for me, so I put some R+ (115g) C-tapers in them. Maybe it's a honeymoon period, but I am hitting them really well and shooting some good scores with them. The long irons are easy to hit high, and the short irons are easy to flight down. And they seem surprisingly long for a forged one-piece club. What more could you ask for?

And they don't look so bad either!
