Best shaft for a low-spin fade.

Recommended Posts

Going in for a fitting at Sea Island in a few weeks. Would love some insight for driver shafts to try out while there that would promote a low-launch low-spin fade. Currently gaming an Atmos Black TS 6X in a TS3 which has been great relative to older shafts over the past season but definitely a bit too light for me. For reference I'm a bit of a larger build (6'4" 245) with a smoothish tempo and moderate transition but getting club head speed between 110-115 depending on the day. Love to hear some anti-left shaft suggestions to try!

Cheers

I'd just stick with the Atmos Black and go up to 7x. Not really worth the $$ to go to Tensei Pro White 70tx but that would be another good option. Diamana d+ ltd white 70tx also good. Koepka hits a nice solid fade with that shaft I think.

No shaft is fade or draw biased. What you are looking for is determined by impact conditions. If you just want to try a heavier shaft because you want better feel or possibly more control, I would just go for a heavier model of the shaft you currently have.

Agree with this. Certain types of shafts can be fade or draw biased to a specific PLAYER, but not biased themselves in a vacuum.

Traditionally, stouter mid shafts are favored for cutting the ball, things like @Booker mentioned. Shafts that are softer in the mid section tend to be favored for turning the ball over, BUT this depends on the player. Shafts with more load can play more into the player's timing feel, and this could mean it anything in terms of potential shot shape. For example, Matsuyama always seems to have softer mid shafts like the AD-DI in the bag and he has a violent transition but seems to always favor a cut. Oosthuizen on the other hand is as smooth as butter but typically plays absolute rebar (HZRDUS T1100) and he typically draws the ball.

My rule of thumb; start with the conventional wisdom but do not hesitate to go against it if it feels wrong.

I can't agree more with your first sentence.

You mean I can't "dial up" the ball flight I want?

Some of this doesn't really make sense. A 6X should be plenty for someone who swings 113ish on average, most people find X super stout unless they swing around 110. Do you come crazy out-in (over the top)? So for you to be both smooth and at the bottomish end of X in most tip-stiff, low torque profiles, I would imagine you would find a 7X a bitt beefy. The other problem is Fujikura tend to be a bit torquey, so they trick players into thinking they are soft, light, whippy, whatever. When in reality they aren't. The Atmos TS Black is very stout but it doesn't feel like it.

My bet is if you went to a more counterbalanced shaft, like a Project X HZRDUS Black, T1100, Accra TZ6, or Tensei Pro Orange you would find that the 6X would be fine and would feel a heck of a lot tighter.

Shaft probably only going to play a role insomuch that it could effect where you strike the ball on the face. All else equal, shaft probably not going to produce "low spin fades".

If you really want an anti left club, you probably want something with a "Fade" setting like G410/M5 with a heavier shaft and head combo.

My advice is to go into the fitting with zero pre-conceived notions and do your best to NOT notice exactly what you are hitting (shaft, flex, hosel config, loft, etc) and let the results speak for themselves. Knowingly hand someone a club with a X-flex shaft and almost all will swing differently in an attempt to 'load' it.

Cant really use swing speed alone to determine how a shaft will play for someone since how they load it can vary from player to player. Im a 113ish guy as well and play a PO 70TX and it doesn't feel remotely stout and I can still turn it over
