How do you store your persimmon/hickory wood collection?

Recommended Posts

Some people put their collection in staff bags (as I do). Some have display racks or hang some on a wall. How do members here who collect store their persimmon/hickory woods?

I have a 10" MacGregor staff bag that houses most of my collection. What is currently missing from this bag is a set of MacGregor 945W EOM (1-4) and a second 945 EOM driver (former gamer). These will be restored this fall. Problem is I am running out of real estate in my Mac staff bag. I suppose I could move my bag to my 15.5" PowerBilt display staff bag.

Robot--- Yep I would use that PB display bag but would not want to lift it full of clubs. I would hate to read of you getting a double hernia trying to lift it full of clubs. Your'e Welcome. Most of mine are stored in my shop and I have covers on most of them. I also have painter's tape on the covers marked telling me what is under them. I do not really have a proper display area like you do to display them. Trust me I have staff bags and any other kind of bag I can find storing clubs in the shop , in the front bedroom and the storage building across the street. I was planing since I had semi retired to get my stuff organized and cataloged. I can hardly work in the shop. I did hire a guy to help me the other day and he did not know jack as to what I was attempting to do and would not listen as to how to put stuff together. I finally after a couple of hours paid him $20 and set him on up the road. I did how ever hire him back a couple of days later to do my landscaping and pressure wash my house in which he did a bang up job. I was wanting to get the shop cleaned out again so I can do some work before my accident. I can not stand long neither can I sit long unless it is in my recliner with the heat and massage going. Can not lift hardly anything heavier than a cup of coffee with my left side due to my scapula being cracked. Being hurt and laid up is h e l l on me because I am used to doing something

I keep mine in three different places.

Clubs I'm working are in a rack I built in the garage. Currently there are a set of W25MTs and partial set of MT1Ws (2/3) that need to be whipped and gripped this weekend after getting their 5th dip yesterday. Also there are a set of R75 SEOMs that need a final sand and stain this weekend before they get some poly.

Clubs I'm keeping for shaft harvesting are in the basement furnace closet. I have a set of DXs, a set of PGA Armours, and some late VIPs in that holding cell.

Clubs I'm playing...we'll there in my bag. Currently my RC 69 driver and Kook Kat are there along with my '53 Hogan 3 wood and BT2W 4 wood. the 8813 is there too. The Kool Kat is coming back upstairs tomorrow, but all I can do with the RC 69 is hit is straight, so that is going to stay for a bit. I think I'll take the MT1Ws out next week too.

But the bulk of them are behind me against the wall. I have a nice USB speaker phone that plugs into my laptops so I spend a lot of time putting and looking at my clubs during conference calls these days. The order and grouping changes all the time so the clubs I'm thinking about at the time end up in the front. The front row residents on the right include my 6 Penna SEOMs and on the left my M75s as I contemplate what color they are going to be next.

(And just for Big Stu, there is a green shafted Ironmaster next to the 8802, 8823, and Canadian 8813 and it gets to roll at least a few balls every day)

They bring me much joy and I like having them around where I can see and waggle them. My wife doesn't get it an thinks I'm a moron.

Stu, I have decided to put my collection in the PowerBilt bag. I'll end up finding a new home for the MacGregor bag (purging I keep telling myself). The following is the latest picture of the PowerBilt bag.

I hope you're recovering and will be well soon. Take care my friend.

Best regards,

Sam

Robot can I have first dibs on the Mac bag if you decide to sell it? I am just like you in the fact I like to keep certain clubs to look at and waggle around. Also with my vintage rounds I switch around quite a bit

That's a possibility. I have to be sure I don't have an outstanding agreement made on it. I am sure I don't.

Can you tell me a little more about those Mizuno Masters irons? I've two sets, both different from those. I called Mizuno's customer service up to ask about them, and there was one bloke there who said one of the sets I had either dated from 1987 or 1994. They didn't know much about them. Yours look similar to a Mizuno Masters set I have seen up for auction in Japan with a "2000" stamping (I'm guessing released in 2000), but yours don't have that stamping.

Beautiful looking irons, by the way.

The days of me adding are coming to an end. Unless I find super outstanding versions of what I have or graced by luck to come across a set or an individual wood of the MacGregor WW Special, I'm done. The problem with collecting is that there could be an unreachable ceiling. I have come to the believe for me it is about quality of my collection, not quantity. As much as I love it, the MacGregor staff bag might have to go. Big Stu has dibs.

My Mizuno Masters Tournament set has been referred to as the satin MP29 version. It’s actually the 2nd set I’ve owned. I played a lot of golf even The California State Am at Pebble with my first set before selling them. When I saw this set I flipped that they were less than $300 in great shape and had the P/S wedge. I have seen at least 7 sets but only 1 P/S wedge. The 1st set was slightly used at Gypsy’s Golf for $2400 I saw definitely did not buy in the mid 90’s.

By the way, regarding wives and all the sticks and bags, she has a lot of chickens and a huge vegetable garden in the back yard.

Also, My dad was as a member at Riviera from ‘78-‘88 and I was a youth member there from ‘78-‘84.

And I can tell you what’s under every head cover.

The original R90 just showed up in the box when I bought my ‘76 Staffs 15 years ago.

MacKenzie bag 50th BD present from my brother.

I think that was their original address then the last couple of years relocated to the wrong end of town. I believe the owner originally had a store and/or bar that attracted prominent tour players from NorCal who would trade clubs and he started as the middle man and the rest was history. After some time caddies would bring their players’ clubs to the store.

Until EBay came along.

Yeah, they moved down near the marina in San Leandro to a huge location that they probably couldn’t afford. It’s now an Asian supermarket. Not a very desirable area but it is getting better.

I lived in San Leandro for pretty many years. I remember I bought that bag at their High St. location as a reward to myself with my first income tax refund from my first casino job in California. I also remember buying a set of Toski irons at the San Leandro location a year or so later.

You're welcome buddy. I'll need to find a box to send the bag. PM me and we'll start working out the particulars.

Thanks for the reply. So a mid-90s release is most likely. I have always wondered when the P/S club appeared. I don't recall seeing any in the late Eighties/very early Nineties when I played. I have a set of Honma PP737 irons from about 1987, and they go 3i to 11i, with the 11i more of an iron than a wedge, even though it has 54* of loft. One of my Mizuno ANGC sets also goes 3i-11i, and the 11i is similarly more like a normal iron than wedge. I think the P/S club became widespread sometime in the Nineties from the Japanese manufacturers, but I've no confirmation of this. The ones I have seen are definitely more wedge-like than the two 11i I have.

Organizing the garage this weekend and finished a club storage locker that is fairly efficient. 5 bagged sets of play clubs (two hickory sets, 80's blades, 90's blades, and my wife's Pings. 16 pairs of shoes, and through the middle section I can organize 100 loose hickories.

Just found this thread - seems like a few guys in here have classic collections. I know nothing about collecting...here's a couple questions I have.

1. Have a set of 1980s (i think early 80s?) Wilson staff persimmons. Still with original shafts, grips, whipping. A couple years ago i had a house fire. The heads of these luckily didn't get much damage. The shafts (Precision FM 6.5s) show scorching (maybe can be cleaned?) and the grips (original Golf Pride Victory with Grip Rite printed) are partially melted to the shafts.

If I was to get these refinished - cleaned up for display (not planning to sell for now). Is it better not to change the original shafts (as I said I think they can be cleaned/polished). How about the grips? Here are a few pics...

Part 2 question...basically same for a set of 1987 Titleist Tour Model Box Blades (have full set 1-PW...although the 1 isn't branded "Box Blade"). These are in much better shape...Dynamic Gold S300 shafts & same Victory grips. Not as much scorching or melted grips. Change or leave original?

20200727-100857.jpg

Main thing I lost in the fire was my grandfather's Spalding Calamity Jane putter. Have no idea about the year/authenticity of it. My grandmother said several people offered her $500+ back in the 90s after my grandfather passed. She held it and it got passed to me.

Unfortunately the display I had it in was in the hot part of the fire...the wood shaft of course burned, but I thought could find the head. But in all the mess we never found it ?. Maybe the heat even melted it...sad day.
