DIY Shaft Puller

El cheepo
Well im new here but thought id post this up. With the hollidays and all I just cant afford to buy a nice shaft puller so this last weekend I decided to make one for cheep as possible. This ended up costing me under $20. The drill press vice was 12.99 at Harbor Freight, under $3 for nuts/bolt/washers from Ace, I allready had a shaft vice clamp and the metal I used was just some scrap from a local yard. Here's some pics, sorry so crappy used my phone.

Someone made me aware that I moved the pics from this post and they no longer show up, so I thought id repost them incase anyones still interested in the way I put my puller together.

Nice set up. Have you tried it with a graphite driver shaft yet? I fabricated one from a automotive gear puller and a bench vice that works good but your set up is much better from what I see.

The only thing I'd change would be the bolts which hold the shaft vice clamp. I'd make them wing nuts for easier taking on and off.

love it!
I was thinking the same thing. Even though I pretty much only have to hand tighten the bolts its a pain on the fingers. Im also going to drill a hole in the middle of the two bolts on one side and just use that, no need for two bolts on both sides to clamp it down. Thanks for the input!

Directions anyone? Same idea, different implementation: http://planet-torque...golf/extractor/

Looks nicer than the one I made but it definately needs a better way to hold the shaft than that.

I thought the original idea was brilliant, so I went ahead and built a very similar model with a few variations. I hope you like it.

The changes I made were,

- I added a multi hosel adapter by drilling a hole in one I already owned and mounting it with a screw for ease of change. It spins between .370, .355 and .335 hosel openings.

- I changed the mount for the shaft clamp in a couple different ways. Since I couldn't find any hex bolts with full threading past 1.25", I picked up some carriage bolts and secured them first into wood and then through the assembly with a nut at the other end. This way, the bolts stay in the same position when you tighten or loosen the wing nuts.

- Which brings me to the final change, the wing nuts. These allow for easier tighenting and loosening of the assembly.

Costs

Shaft Vice Clamp - $15.99 (Irwin Tools, purchased at Home Depot)
Scrap Metal - Free (had some metal building roof clips left over from a job)
Nuts and Bolts - $8
Wood - Free (always have random pieces left over from various jobs)
Rubber Shaft Mount - $1.99 (already had it)
Hosel Adapter - $5 (already had it)

Total Cost - $31 +/-

A big thanks to the OP for the original concept.

Thank you OP and Carlo for posting your work. I recently have been looking to buy a puller but can't afford to spend $70+ on one. That's ridiculous. This should be a fun and easy project to do on a free weekend. Can't wait to get started!!

Thanks again guys. I love this site.

I very rarely find the need for the use of a shaft puller when working on irons but the simplicity of this puller makes me think it would be great to have on hand. Just would really like to see how well it does on graphite shafts.

Yea I can't see a real reason to have this for irons but, for anything with a graphite shaft this maybe the ticket.

Until I put this togeather I didnt realize it but your right, no real need for the puller on iron heads but now that I have it i'll keep using it.

I'll be pulling a graphite shaft when my new driver head gets here. I'll let you how it goes.

For steel shafts there really is no need. I just apply some heat and twist the heads off. But for graphite, you can't twist or you could damage the shaft.

What's beneficial about using this set-up, or any professional model, is the application of force. The force should be focused on the hosel and directly in line with the shaft. If you've ever used a pry bar or crowbar coupled with the hosel adpater, you may have noticed a difference in pulling shafts which fit snugly and those which fit loosely. If they fit snugly, the pry bar will force the shaft against the head/tip ever so slightly and prove a fickle manuver. If the shaft has even a slight bend while pulling it can be damaged.

good luck out there...

I used it today to pull a couple of graphite shafts out of my fairway woods, worked great. I've also pulled couple more sets of iron shafts with it and its still holding up great.

Awesome idea! I couldnt bring myself to buy a $70 puller... plus I needed to pick up the hand stamps for my wedges anyway...

Good work on the pullers, but i dont know why everyone is cheaping out on the shaft clamps. The only thing those all rubber shaft clamps are good for is changing grips, IMO they're horrible for pulling shafts. Spend a little more and get a metal sided vice clamp, they have much more reliable holding power.

I have gotten a few inquiries about the hosel adapter. So here is the link to the product on golf works.com.

I don't know if i agree 100 percent. The rubber ones won't slide in the vice. The metal ones need to scuffed, or grooved, or they will slide in the vice and then the entire assembly moves as you attempt to pull the head. I have both. I actually bought the metal one with the same concept, "why am I cheaping out?", but still prefer the rubber model. Just bought a new rubber last week.

Yeah, I did the same, bought the metal one, then found it's too big to fit in my Roberts, I guess unless you weld it or glue it it will slide or move more than rubber. I use my rubber one all the time now.
