Which irons have tungsten weights in the soles?

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if it's possible to generalise about tungsten weights in the soles of irons being a "good thing".

Which irons have this feature? I'm thinking AP1, i20, Rapture 2, Anser Forged, TM Firesole, Rocketballz Max, Callaway Apex for starters. All good irons.

Do you think it improves the club? Is there a trend here?

Adams cmb, mb2, and xtd (among others). In general, yes, the use of tungsten can improve an iron. The ability to move a large quantity of weight can change the MOI and ball trajectory.

I just picked up a set of J38 cb irons with the magnesium composite rather than tungsten to put up against my DPC and AP2 irons. Really looking forward to seeing how they all compare to one another.

I think tungsten is pretty cool stuff. It's an extremely tough and dense metal. A friend with some knowledge on the subject warns against tungsten rings, because if you get into an accident and wind up in the ER with a broken hand, it's very difficult to get the rings off (even by cutting the ring).

As far as golf clubs are concern, I think tungsten allows a measure of design freedom by allowing large amounts of weight to be placed in a small space. Most useful for cosmetic enhancement, where a large chunk of steel may look unsightly. I'm not surprised that players clubs are the type that most often use tungsten, since cosmetics are so critical to this type of player.

Hi. I'm not sure how to respond. When you ask, does it improve the club? In what way?
I think it can only improve in the fitting of the club. I don't think it can improve the quality, or performance of a club overall for everyone.
Adams golf slot technology, can only improve to the maximum USGA limits. Every other company produces the same performance to the max. USGA limits.
I'm sorry, but I think it is all hype.
On the positive side, if you as a golfer thinks it improves things for you then use it.
I have almost 20 iron heads in my fit cart, and not one of them has a removable weight.
If you are a golfer that has money to spend and experiment, then by all means.
AsTom Wishon has stated, a lot of times, it takes an lot of weight to effect ball flight and trajectory. 20+ some odd grams.
The amount of weight needed to be added, causes a very large increase to swing weight. This I think would cause more problems.
Club head design, sole shape, sole width, center of gravity, bounce angles, and loft is what creates ball flight. Changing a small amount of weight will cause a change in the way you feel and maybe impact the ball. But they affect swing weight.
Sorry.

We're not talking of adding tip weights here - not sure what you mean. This is tungsten built into the sole of commercial clubs to lower the COG. Tom Wishon was actually talking about a hypothetical aluminium club head with tungsten weights in the sole. Ingenious idea. I don't think he was dismissing the principle of a lower COG, though he often talks about the max. USGA limits impeding more radical ideas of weight distribution.

Swing weight depends on the total construction of the club head plus shaft, as you know. I'm all for a heavier head myself, because then we don't have to get into longer shafts and lighter heads (Wilson, Cleveland etc)

Okay. I read the original post and saw the wording weights. Plural. So I assumed more than one weight, which I read as removable.
But you are talking about fixed tungsten weighting manufactured into the club?

I'm not the OP, but I gather he was talking about the fixed tungsten weights that are built in to the club head direct from the manufacturer. Many of the OEMs have multiple tungsten weights in their iron heads. Again, this is to change the overall COG and the MOI of the iron heads. It didn't sound like he was speaking about the removable weights (ie CTP for Ping or the weights on the last TP irons) that OEMs use to change SW.

I've heard this before unfortunately. I sliced my finger off by accident once. When the hand specialist was re-attaching it in the ER, he was telling me all the horror stories of Titanium and Tungsten wedding rings. He said that rings in general are the highest cause of the emergency cases he deals with. Good excuse for guys not to wear their wedding rings I guess. Those things have to feel like corn in your teeth. Sorry to thread jack.

Tungsten weights are interchangeable with gold weights, same density. I think if you replace them with gold the feel is softer.

And depleted uranium - mountains of that about.

But not, how shall we put it, very good for the "mental game"......

I wear a tungsten ring. Did my research before purchase, and yes it is very hard stuff. So hard that it actually very brittle and can be easily broken, but cannot be cut. In an emergency a simple pair of pliers can break a tungsten ring. Or in a pinch a hammer. if you deform a tungsten ring at all it will break. Just call me stumblinepedia...
