Another year almost in the books here.

Outcomes are more ambiguous than ever. Had you purchased a year ago...you'd be up ~100% vs an S&P return of ~25%. But over a two year horizon (which is the time horizon of this thread) you'd be down vs. the S&P.

Not clear where we go from here, but I'll stand by my prediction that BTC goes to zero by 12/31/2022.

Just had to bump this up. It was fun/interesting to see some of the comments here. I bought some coins back in 2018 and after things went south, pretty much forgot about them until recently when crypto was in the news again with BTC and Ether making huge strides. I am still holding some Ether (only have 1), XRP, Stellar, Litecoin and Neo, along with some lesser coins. Portfolio was worth about $400 when I lost interest, now over 3K, I'll never get rich, but still fun to watch what transpires over time. If I would have only bought Doge back then.

My pog collection and Pokemon cards are skyrocketing in value these days too. If only I could find that box of Beanie Babies I used to have in the garage....

Anyone here heard of Chia (XCH)?

Bitcoin/Etherium and the like have gotten a lot of recent bad press lately due to the insane amount of electricity necessary to mine. Chia is marketed as a "greener" alternative using HDD storage space as the primary medium for the network. Most users "plot" their empty space using very fast SSDs and then "farm" those plots on large-capacity HDDs, which is much less energy-intensive than traditional mining using tons of CPU or GPU resources.

This is a huge disruption in my industry (which just happens to be HDD/SSD data storage). Some of the supply chain issues in semiconductors was already causing shortages in general, and this is fuel on that fire.

But I'm wondering if anyone in the wider crypto world, or people only marginally interested in either, have even heard of it...

I have heard of it and read about the use of SSD for mining, but didn't have enough interest to pursue it any further. Maybe I should, because I felt the same about BTC when it was around .50. 🥴

I'm playing around with Chia farming... Because of my industry, I've got spare HDDs just laying around, but sadly I don't have a good PC to use to actually set up the plots, so my "farm" is growing very slowly.

Your chances to win Chia are basically your portion of the netspace (total amount of plotted storage on the network). When I started, my first plot (100GiB) said it would take 2 years to win 2 XCH. I'm now up to 2.7TiB of space plotted and it says to win 2 XCH will take an estimated... 2 years. LOL. The netspace is over 5x when I started and that was just 2 1/2 weeks ago. It jumped from just over 2EB to now over 10EB.

If you wanted to actually try your hand at it, and you have tons of storage available, then, why not? It's basically a lottery ticket with hardware you already have. If you want to rush out to the store and buy a new PC and a bunch of HDDs for farming, well, the ROI won't be very good for small-scale farmers.

I totally understand your concern about the Earn rates being cut by crypto.com and Cronos. It's a bummer when we see changes like that in the market. As for diversifying in DeFi, have you looked into some of the newer platforms like Uniswap or Aave? They have been gaining a lot of traction lately and offer some interesting features for investors. I also wanted to share an article that helped me build a strong trading strategy. It talks about the concept of the strongest money in the world and how it relates to investing in cryptocurrency. Essentially, the article argues that Bitcoin is the strongest money in the world due to its scarcity and network effects. This can be an important consideration when thinking about diversifying your portfolio. Personally, I've found that taking a long-term view and focusing on strong fundamentals has been the key to success in crypto investing.

NFT not Bitcoin but…

A guy I talk to at the gym showed me a picture of a cartoon monkey or gorilla on his phone the other day and says to me “guess what I paid for this”? I looked at it for about 3 seconds and responded “99 cents”? He says “nope $500” and then tells me he can sell it for $3,500. 🤪 I just kept working out and feeling like an old 49yo! Haha

i bought this when it came out- Tigers first Signed NFT-for $40.  It is now selling for upwards of $7000 and the more rare versions are now in the $20000+ range and expected to go up way more as there will be a special collection coming around the Masters time.

Oh I am sure. It’s nuts! As I am talking to that guy, another guy chimed in and says his buddy just sold one for like $160k 🤪

Here are the rarer signed versions for Tiger and Brady.  And this is without current worldwide expansion.  This is just Americas.

Personally I wouldn’t pay $5 for any of those if they were just for me. But if you can buy and sell these and make $, more power to ya!

Brady's game jersey just sold for almost half a mil, Michael Jordans rookie card is in the stratosphere; first edition Marvel comic books are in the 100s of thousands; Banksy painting of flowers in a vase $15 million; Circle T Scotty Cameron/Swag Putter cover/etc selling for crazy numbers and on.

This is just another form of collection - in this case it is a signed digital item by superstars and in the case of Tiger the only ones in existence as of now.  Additionally, many NFTs come with 'utility' - in the case of a recent Dale Earnhardt NFT, the owners gets to meet Dale and go on a ride in his racecar.  Other ones provide access to parties, a physical items, meet and greets, access to industry leaders for mentorship, etc.

This Tiger one has not dropped its utility - but there are some rumors that it will include Masters tickets with Tiger or other meet and greets.

Oh I get it. But call me old school. I prefer something like a game worn jersey, game worn bball shoe, game used ball etc. Something I can touch, feel, smell, etc… Just not interest in a picture on a screen of something. Not hating, just my preference.

Thinking about it. If Tigers gamer Scotty ever becomes available, we split it 50/50. You make an original NFT of it, I’ll take the actual putter 😊 Deal?! 😜

You never know - when this Tiger drop happens, that could be part of the 'utility'.  There are some doing precisely such a thing - if you own the NFT, you own fractional or even full ownership of the physical item too.

Oh, I am sure. It’s in its infancy and will continue to evolve… I’m greedy tho! I want the whole putter and I want to use it! 😜
