How about just being cool with somebody playing whatever they have fun playing with. If a 20 hdcp plays blades, why are they a poser? If a scratch player bags SGIs, that's cool too, but doesn't mean you have to. I've never understood why people have to get so uptight about what's in someone else's bag.

 

Now if a 20 hdcp tries to justify their blades because they're a scratch level ball striker and that they're just losing their shots around the green, let'em have it. But if they're honest and say "I play blades because I like the way they look, or feel when you hit the ball, or the artisan nature of them, etc..." let'em enjoy THEIR game.

I don't understand the big deal made about blades. They're not for everyone but the comments made about them would make you think you'd struggle to get the ball airborne and barely hit a single decent shot all day. It's made to sound like you'd struggle to break 120 whilst easily shooting 85 with your GI cavity backs. They're not THAT different. Out of curiosity I've played MP33 and MP32 and my scores were much the same as if I played my CB irons. As for comparing them to featheries and persimmon woods. Come on. We're talking modern blades that are much more forgiving not blades from the 1920's.

 

I've played with people who play blades who weren't that good but I didn't spend the whole day thinking "Gee he'd be so much better cavity backs" because the truth is he wouldn't. He'd still have the same lousy swing and make the same mistakes.

 

It's strange that it's such a polarizing subject.

For me the difference in a marginal shot is the biggest reason I stay with a players cavity back. A marginal heal shot with a blade is not very penal. A toe shot is penal (to me and cost me to much yardage). I also don't find a pure shot with a blade anymore satisfying that one perfectly struck with my IE1.

 

I play to shoot the lowest score period. I know which clubs enable me to do that. I started playing with my fathers 1960 MacGregor blades and the first set I bought were 1981 Titleist Tour Models 3-PW with matching Wooded Driver, 3 & 4 Woods. Added a Titleist SW and 2 iron to that set. A friend bought some Ping Eye 2's about the same time in the pro shop. A few weeks later I hit those on the range and I thought damn they are ugly (and damn they are forgiving) !

 

Still hit some blades from time to time and don't care what anybody plays. I do care how they play though when we are partners in a tournament!

Absolutely agree. Minimum 1 month ( 4 rounds and 4 practice sessions )

 

Plenty would run back . But a few would be pleasantly shocked that the boogie man had no teeth.

Tour pros are likely the _only _ones good enough to benefit from the subtle differences between players' CB vs. blades. For most weekend golfers I see, it matters little whether they hit 4" behind the ball with a CB or a blade.

 

So the least they should be allowed to do is play what they like to look at. :)
