My 2019 Retro Bag

Recommended Posts

Haven’t posted here in forever; haven’t played much in a long time either. Went through a nasty divorce and got remarried to a wonderful woman who wants me to get back into golf.

Wanted to do something fun for 2019. All of these items have a fond place in my heart and I really like the semi throwback theme.

Pulled out an old 80s PING staff bag I purchased several years ago. It’s all original and still has the rain hood.

Reshafted some Eye2 BeCu heads that have been sitting in storage for several years too. 3-SW black dot, matching SN “J” suffix heads. Shaft are Dynalite Gold S300 XP playing -1/2”.

Still playing my 910D3, the only driver I’ve ever bought new and hasn’t been able to be knocked out of the bag in over 9 years (8.5° with ahina 70S tipped 1” playing -1”

Fairway is a 915D 15° with Aldila Blue By You 80S tipped 1/2”, playing - 3/4”. Still one of my favorite shafts ever.

Putter is a Odyssey Versa 7 36”

I know it’s not the latest and greatest but it’s made up of the clubs I’ve liked the most over the years. Pretty excited to get back out and play some golf. 1f3fen394lbo.jpeg

Love it man!!! Those old Eye2s are a timeless classic design. The 910 is not a bad driver either. I still have my 915 D2 as a back up for my Homna Driver. Those old Ping Staff bags are tough too. I still have mine from the 80s but my zippers have corroded shut from being in storage for 25 years. My is in a little rougher shape than yours but I used mine for 10 years or so it is well traveled to say the least. I always say play what works no matter the age or who makes it.

This is the kind of WITB I like to see. I don't really appreciate the new stuff as much as I appreciate stuff like this. That leather bag looks amazing and those eye2 irons look great!

Love it......I have 2 sets of Eye 2 Becus in my collection take them out once or twice a year. Here is my Florida retro I keep at my Mom's house that I use when visiting. i3 Blades, Tour Wedges, Anser 2, OG R11 and the trusty V Steel. I am in the process now of building a set of s59's that I played for 7 years to replace the i3's. Gonna run them through a re finish process put in some KBS Tours I had in my set of s56, some Orange Glow Ferrules, Orange Grips and paint fill for the Florida theme. 2bt5n4e70nut.jpeg

Can you tell me about the I3's vs the Eye 2's in your personal experience?

To start with the Eye 2 are more collectible and iconic especially the Becu. From a playing perspective the i3 blades I have pictured are like a precursor to the S series which I love. Smaller heads, minimal offset and a thinner top line. The heads on the i3 series are a bit more traditional shape (kinda square toe) while the Eye 2 have the distinctive bigger toe in a pointy shape. I have my brothers old set of i3 O Size irons in my collection and they have much larger heads and more offset these would play closer to the Eye 2 irons. Either could be bought in stainless steel heads for around $100-$150 a set.

I have a friend of mine who plays the I-3s has been playing them ever since they came out. He will switch every now and then but always goes back to those old I-3s. Also V-Steels whats not to like? I am a big V-steel fan even though I am not front line gaming mine for now

Thats awesome. Theres nothing wrong with older clubs. Ive got a couple sets of vintage irons: Hogan Apex blades from the '60s and a set of Wilson Staff Blades from the early '80s that I enjoy playing just as much as I do my new Pinemeadow PGXs. As much as I know a newer GI iron is probably better for me, I just love the look and feel of a classic blade.

I'm getting old. It's like when I see a car from the 80s or early 90s with antique license plates on it. Seeing a metal wood in a bag called retro...

Great paint fill on the Eye 2s. Is that original?

Got paired up with a single on Thursday who played Eye2 irons. Lefty. He had them on a Golfboard, one of those electric skateboard things. I thought it an interesting juxtaposition of modern and retro.
