I'd guess the 90's or later, and not the 70's version, as MacGregor went back to the traditional G in script (long hand), some time in the 80's (?). The hosel is much shorter than the older forgings, making the blade a lot more playable. Also, they are satin finish, rarely see these in older clubs with shiney chrome. In any case that square toe is GORGEOUS, where did you get them ??? And who is JP ??? Let's see pix of the full set.. Great find !!!

Wow. I don't have the same love for such square toes, but those are gorgeous! I don't really know how you'd go about accurately dating custom shop irons in the absence of a serial number, but I would say that the satin chrome finish and the ferrules are consistent with Macs irons from the 80s onwards - check out the ads that Teevons posted on the LH Jack Nicklaus Muirfield thread.

Thanks for the replies. They have a serial which is SO8653B

They are amazing in person and can't wait to hit them tomorrow.

If they were produced in the 90's would the lofts be based of a 48 wedge or 50??

The "SO" denotes a Special Order set of clubs from MacGregor. Congrats on your find!

As HAB said SO denotes special order. As a Mac fan that is a great find and in pristine shape also

The satin finish of these irons is also part of the custom order, as referenced by the earlier threads for MacGregor Custom orders.

And the 10/P iron milling grind was strictly RH ONLY.
Thanks. What's the 10/P iron milling grind? Bit lost there

No way, 30 years ago, could have been anyone in the custom dept
Yep as usual you are correct. I wish we could somehow look it up and see what specs it was actually matched to. I know that Mac, Spalding and Wilson had extensive custom departments in those days

It all comes down to a lot of eBay searching from a guy in Asia. Told me that he bought them NOS from a golf shop owner in japan who in turn bought them from old stock when he took over the shop.

Had a hit today and they are an amazing club. The satin is just beautiful in the sunlight. Love the toe. Also no harder to hit than my scratch blades and due to the reverse muscle, the flight is slightly lower than the usual S300 flight I get.

I have a set of c taper 130x's (which I currently play in the scratch irons) which I can install if I wish but I have a fitting this week which will hopefully get me into the best shafts for my swing.

Also I'm very lucky that I can purchase a few backup sets if I wish!!!!
I am not saying this sarcastically in any shape or form but if you can hit Scratch Irons you are a darn good ball striker to begin with and can probably hit anything. Nothing wrong at all with Scratch equipment I just cant afford them. I have hit some Scratch irons before and loved them. I do currently carry and hit a Scratch 60 in my regular stuff

If you don't play events with the groove rule added as a Condition of Competition, which is generally only for "elite level" amateurs and the professional level, you don't have to worry about it until 2024 at the earliest.

First run with these today produced a 74. Great irons. Still not sure if I'll throw C tapers in them or not.

Does anyone know if the grooves would be legal or illegal with the groove rule??
How was your ball flite and distance compared to the moderns after you stepped those Hogans up a notch?
Shoot my bad I reread the post but with the score you shot I would say they did you well

This has been part of the MacGregor thread for the last 3 years, in reference to the MacGregor milling cuts made in their '50s and '60s RH models
(985, Wingback, Diamondback, Muscleback.)

Look at the profile of this MacGregor 985 style 7 iron.

The RH MacGregor 985 sets include this profile cut so the 10/P iron has the same milling profile as the 9 iron, and the rest of the irons in the set.

The LH MacGregor 985 models do not For the LH models, the 10/P iron looks the same as the 11/DS iron. Flange sole bottom. No milling cut.

As we responded to Charley Penna in a separate MacGregor thread with pictures-

There are NO LH MacGregor Penna Expediter model Wedges, or MT Wingback grinds in the P and DSandIrons.
(You don't have to worry about remakes if there never were any originals)

Have viewed a number of LH MacGregor iron sets. Less than a handful of LH sets where the 10/P iron has the same muscleback grind as the 9 iron.

Apparently it cost less for MacGregor to turn their LH DS/Sand Iron models into a 10/P.

Also got these today but might not be the original furrels so not sure if Special Order. X200 shafts.

Anyone know much? The "macgregor' on the bottom has the capital 'G' in the script.
