J13's WITB: Update- FUJIKURA AXIOM

Recommended Posts

TSR2+ and the TSR2 5 wood have been great.  The TSR2+ is just so friendly off the tee and surprisingly I have no issues hitting it off the deck.  Highly recommend if your 3 wood is primarily a tee club.

TSR2 5 wood has been a great stick for me because it just launches high and flat and it's easy to keep on a green if I'm hitting it into a par 5.  That's something I struggled with in years past but the 5 wood is a great fit and something that will remain in the bag.  I also kept the stock Mitsu 1K Black 85TX in it and have been impressed.  That shaft didn't work out in the TSR2+ but 5 wood it was great.  I think because of tipping.

  • 1 month later...

Sadly not a ton to update but just wanted to add I'm loving the bag right now.  The Titleist TSR3 driver has remained top dog.  I've testing the Triple and Stealth 2.  Also tested the Aerojet which gave me some great ball speeds but launch was low and I lost some carry. The TSR's ability to separate launch and spin is great for me.  I have the 8* and launch sits at 13* with 2220-2500rpms while the Aerojet spin was similar but launch 10-11*.

TSR2+ 3 wood is also great, loving it along with the 5 wood

SMS Pro / SMS iron combo set is money.  Love them and really enjoying the old X100's.  Especially now that the elbow is healed.  Dispersion has improved dramatically and I'm playing great golf right now.

Putter - EAS 4.0 has been very good to me. Speed control is excellent which was my nemesis.

  • J13 changed the title to J13's WITB: Update- FUJIKURA AXIOM

UPDATE:   FUJIKURA AXIOM 125

I've been seriously slacking on updates but it's only because I've been swamped with work. I'm also testing a few prototypes but I can't get into that right now 😁

As some may know I moved to the Mitsu MMTs when they came out and really liked them. Initially, it was because of a torn tendon in my elbow but even after I healed I stuck with them just because I loved the feel. Did a big review for Mitsu and Golfwrx and had them in the bag for a few years.  Then I joined Edel and moved into the new SMS Pro irons and since we didn't work with Mitsu I switched back to the old trusty, DG X100.   Like many, X100 just works for me but they are tougher on the body than graphite.  Going back to steel there was a noticeable change in how I felt after practice sessions or a long day on the course.

At first, I thought it was the weight and an aging body but after throwing an MMT in a 7 iron I noticed a distinct lack of vibration and heft.  All the things I liked about graphite came rushing back so I decided lets go for an upgrade 😎

FUJIKURA Axiom:

Enter Fujikura Axiom 125's.  There were a few times I've tried going lighter but my tempo ultimatlely becomes a problem and I go crawling back to my 125-130g shafts. In any case the Axiom's are on the way and I'll give some updates once I start building them.  I'll do some pics in the build process and provide updates and numbers once I get them on the range.

BUCKLE UP!

I'm in the middle of the graphite trials myself.  Accra and Axiom are the two that I've narrowed it down to so far.

Good luck with yours

I hit the 105 and it was too light, but did not get to hit the 125.  I like to keep the weight around 120 and need to go to graphite, the elbow and wrist pain is getting worse.  Hit the MMT and the LA Golf L series. had very similar numbers!

Maybe I'll add the LA Golf L series into the mix for testing 👍  The graphite does wonders for wrist pain in my experience.

Got somethings built up and ready to test this weekend.  For anyone new to my thread my testing process is pretty simple.

Step 1: Build to spec so it's apples to apples

Step 2: Hit the range and dial things in

Step 3: Look at numbers / LM

Step 4: On course testing AKA where it actually matters

AXIOM is a good looking shaft.  I like the matte finish and graphics aren't too busy.  Interested to see how this feels simply because the struggle has always been getting a higher weighted graphite shaft to not feel like rebar.  So far MMT is a clear winner in this department.

I'll be curious your feedback. For me, mmt kicks like crazy when you really flush one. Axiom does not... but it's not harsh feeling or overwhelming.

It's really really similar to Fuji Pro, so much so I actually think that's what they used and then just improved it slightly.

I also like the matte finish better than glossy.

Edit: ok I hit my set... no data and it was just in my bay. I'd say these kick very little but they are not harsh. If I could draw a parallel it would be Axiom 125 is a x100 and a mmt125 is like px lz.

It could be the heads but the sound was very muted and very quiet.

I will grab numbers myself and hopefully get at least 3-4 rounds on them before things get too cold here. I'm curious how J13 will react to these too.

Looking fwd to it. I got mine on course. Anecdotally, I'm noticing a lot less ball curve. Higher launch and spin seems lower compared to steel I've used in the most recent past.

I'll let pics do the talking for now plus I'm swamped getting ready for 2024 launches 😎

All 7 iron, all same specs.  X100 TI, LA Golf L series 120X, Axiom 125

Ignore the other stuff, part of it was warm up and me working on some stuff.

I'll do a deeper dive as I conclude this but MMT 125 feels more active than AXIOM.  AXIOM has a very uniform, one-piece feel.

I just finished building a 6 iron up with a 105x. Think these would be pretty challenging for an amateur builder like myself to get the swingweight right.  I built mine to standard steel length and had to put about 6-7 grams of tape on the head to get it to D0.

With how narrow and thick walled those tips are I’m sure you’d be boring them out for tip weights left and right

Graphite iron shafts are always a pain to swing weight unless you are playing the irons that I have.  Edel SMS Pro irons make it easier than building with steel.

In case anyone is wondering, soft stepped in wedges feels great.

I've got 125x short iron shafts untipped in my SW and LW and so far I'm happy. Needed lead tape due to heavier grips but not that hard to build.

Looking fwd to seeing J13s long term results.

So when you say softstepped  you left them untipped in wedges?  The more testing I do the more I'm liking these.  As with most graphite I need to make more tweaks to dial them in vs steel.

Its a little early to do a deep dive but so far the most impressive thing to me is dispersion.

That's right, I left the short iron shafts untipped.

I've done the 8i thing before and never liked it with steel but in this case the transition is seamless. There's no shots that I feel I can't hit.

Update:  AXIOM 125

So after extensive testing I believe I have a pretty good feel for the shaft.  As always I'll try to keep this brief and to the point.

Feel : Very uniform feel.  Not as stout feel as the LA Golf L series but not as active as the MMT.  At first I had things at D2 and then added 4gs and the shaft came alive.

Dispersion: Really tight dispersion, on par with my DG X100.  Has less left in it for sure than X100. Whether or not that's a good thing is TBD.

Distance: On average about 4-5yds longer than my X100

Ball Speed: Getting another 1-1.5mph more in ballspeed over X100

Trajectory: High ball flight most likely from the stiff tip section.  Noticeably higher than X100 which isn't exactly ideal for me as I'm a high ball hitter already.

Spin: Spin overall is on average about 300rpm's lower than X100.  Combine less spin with higher flight and you get the extra 5yds.

Overall going to continue to test.  Not sure if I'm making the move just yet.  Need some windy days to see how the ball fly's when the fans on.  More to come!

Hope you're results are better than mine on windy days with the Axioms
