Watched 'em for years, when they dropped, I pounced

Recommended Posts

I have had my eye on this set for probably 6-7 years. They were in Az GolfWorks in Tempe, after the previous owner refused to pay the quoted amount for a full reshaft/regrip. His loss, in the end was my gain.

They had a price on them for most of the time I was watching, of an amount equal to the cost of the work done. One day, recently, the owner of the shop got tired of looking at them, dropped the price and I had enough credit to take them home.

They are in great shape and I will get some added pix of the faces and soles, later this week.

Nice, high sharp toe, clean lines and the looks of a major stinging set of fingers if hit a little thin, early in the morning.

Anyone know any good info on this set?

Thanks guys,

LaMont in AZ

You had to see this set, nearly as long as I have been watching it, LOL. Not sure what I will do with them, but I could not let them slip by. I missed on a set of "DW" stamped MacGregor customs that were Tom Weiskopf's, about a year before we moved AZ GolfWorks to their current location. THIS set was not going to have that same misfortune, hahaha.
I'll update you guys when I decide to part them out or build them with a more suitable shaft for myself.

I was wondering who ended up with those sticks, I too have pretty much hit them everytime I went into azgolfworks but never pulled the trigger because of the high launch shafts. Love the square toe on them though. Hit 'em well

I look at them every Saturday evening and consider putting them in the bag for Sunday's round. So far, the J15 DF's have won out every time. Not that I am afraid........

I was at a friend's home course Friday and the assistant pro, a guy in his early 20's, came out to hit some balls with a set of these. I was very impressed, good to see a young guy playing the classics. I was hitting my 1957 Hogans and we had a great conversation. He said he had found the full set at a Goodwill for about $25. We swapped clubs for a few minutes, I loved the VIP's. Great clubs.

I asked him if he saw any scoring difference when he played vintage vs his new clubs. He said not really, but laughed and said that it was much easier to blame bad shots on the old clubs than it was on the new ones.

He also has a couple persimmons that he practices with, but I don't think he plays rounds with them. Oh, and he uses a Wilson Augusta putter, which just happened to be what I had in my bag, too.

Good stuff.

And if you play persimmon, you're my friend

KM - where is this bar ? :)

Well, BJ, this might surprise you--but it's at Amen Corner!!! :shok:

That's a description of Augusta's 13th hole Azalea, from Tom Doak's book, The Anatomy of a Golf Course: The Art of Golf Architecture. I got interested in Doak dipping into Wingedfoot97's thread, Golf Book Collectors.

I did spice up the selection a bit--added the leather, blonde & buxom part--but basically I pretty much lifted it. :)

After all, WHO knows better how to tempt and tease A Male Mind...

Than another Male Mind?? ;)

Here's to temptation,

I have not kept up with this thread, but sitting here tonight it gave me quite the chuckle.
Tell you what, if I play on Sunday morning, I'll put this set in the Jones Bag, along with a couple of choice persimmons and a vintage SW, and one of my MA/66 putters. Whne I am done, I'll report back and let you know if I am still kicking, LOL.
When I was a young, fairly efficient player, this would have been my dream set. Now, it may just be a set that I look at and think to myself, "if you think you can hit these, you must be dreaming". HaHa.
