Question for you guys...anyone have issues with insomnia? I usually have issues sleeping, but I'm never really sure where to draw the line between sucking it up and going about my day, or calling in sick because I know I won't accomplish a whole lot.

I never have trouble falling asleep.

 

If I wake up in the wee hours (like between 2 and 4), I have trouble getting back to sleep.

 

I don't (and probably never will) take drugs for it. That's just a path I don't want to start down.

 

I have NO PROBLEM occasionally calling in when you need to re-charge, or are finally getting a bomb-Word not allowed sleep going. You're probably even going to be more productive in the long run.

 

Work is not life.

Basically need to figure out which side of the spectrum you are on.

 

I had it really bad right before I switched career fields @ 10 years ago, its awful. You want to sleep, then you start thinking about sleep, then you stare at your clock thinking about how bad you want to sleep because you are going to be exhausted if you cant.

 

Random list of things I've done in the last 5 years or so to improve sleep including copying half of Eagle's list:

 

No caffeine after noon.

Dont take a long nap when you get home from work.

Some sort of physical exercise every day - workout, 9 holes, 20 minutes of yoga, hit balls for an hour...something.

Glass of bourbon every night @ 2 hours prior to sleepy time - **not medically approved yet

Dont watch tv in bed.

Try having a fan or some white noise on, I cant stress how much this helped me.

On another birthday note, I was born on the hottest March 4th on record in the MD/DC area. I think it topped out in the 83-85 range. Kent probably played 54 holes that day.

Never got to really test the old theorem of 21 people in a room and 2 will have the same birthday. But that's about what we have in here, and it's true.

Even crazier, I have 11 kids on my soccer roster, and THREE of them have the same birthday. Which coincidentally is March 5.

I remember old probability teachers pulling it a couple times.

 

At 23 people, the chance that at least 2 people will have the same birthday exceeds 50%. You need to get out to like 60-70 people to get to 99%.

 

3 out of 11 is crazy.

PT is about a 5 minute walk from my office, and they still want me using crutches, so I threw on the footjoy/ZR rain suit (including rain bucket) and made the journey a little while ago. I got downgraded (.....upgraded?) to one crutch.

Siegel, I've summarized your medical advice in to a short summary so you can see it in one place. Your best bet is to have kids. I figure if you get started now, in 10 months you have the potential to pop out a kid. Then shortly after that your insomnia will be cured and you'll start sleeping whenever you can. Problem solved.

The reason kids will work in the long run is increased sleep pressure due to accumulation of sleep debt. Just self-impose it like I said, and you'll sleep well and not have a kid. Or have a kid. They'll cause you to lose sleep over other things.
