A most fabulous looking scorecard.

To paraphrase Meatloaf, 3 outta 4 ain't bad...except when you're the 4th.

Although, the amateur stood up well to the onslaught. ;)

I actually really enjoyed the course too. It reminds me a little bit of Wildhorse in Gothenburg, NE, a rolling, sweeping terrain. I think if it were just a little bit firmer it would really play similar too, where you could use the slopes to move your ball to the hole. The greens rolled nicely and at a decent speed, if you were above the hole they weren't scaring you to death, but you definitely had to pay attention. It's pretty wide open, and if you miss into the longer rough, it's still very playable, albeit a less than stellar lie. Just a really enjoyable course.

Did catch a couple of lies in footprints in the bunkers, which are very soft.

I've got a good buddy at home that I play a lot with. About a 4 cap. I've always thought he had the best short game of anyone I've played with. Not sure anymore, B-Man gets up and down from everywhere! And he's got that sweet looking lefty swing.

Were you sipping on someone's flask? Lol. No way PB comes close to Wildhorse. OK, maybe the fact that they're built on open prairie. Other than that, nuh uh.

Did I say it come close to Wildhorse? No. I said it reminded me of it. Which it does. It's a similar terrain although PB is hillier. They both have short, tightly cut fairways. They both have greens with banks and swales. Both have amply wide fairways. If PB was drier and firmer you could play similar shots along the ground and feed the ball to the hole.

You've played each course what, one time? So we're the same on PB. I've played Widhorse, oh maybe a couple more dozen times than that. I think I know if something reminds me of something else.

'Glad you enjoyed your stay. I bet that drive was a killer, though.

Unfortunately PB, or the vast majority of the course in the Chicago area for that matter, will never see the dry and firm conditions that one sees in Nebraska. That state used to be at the bottom of an ancient inland sea, and it's sand, sand, and more sand. In the Midwest, if you dig down a foot, you get hard, packed clay. Illinois was carved by a glacier during the past ice age, so any sand that might have been there is long gone. That the big reason we have over-watered "prairie style" courses, and not true links courses. Visually they can be interesting, but they basically play as target golf.

PB is about as wide open as it gets. The Bear touched on the best part about Prairie Bluff. I love the sound of gunfire on a golf course (the police gun range is right next to the prison) and the sight of Stateville Penitentiary looming in the distance is hilarious. However, I can't think of too many target golf holes there. Maybe off the tee on 12 and 16 but that's about it.

Anyone ever play Ruffled Feathers ? Opinions would be welcome.

Yes, numerous times. RF used to be a top notch course, albeit pricey, but they struggled for years, and let the place go to pot, customer service included. I understand that they recently had a partial renovation, so maybe it has changed for the better. I always liked the layout, except for 2nd hole that plays directly into the sun in the early AM. It has a few quirky holes, and is mostly target golf, given that it's a Dye design.

I'd say it's worth a visit if you can get a discount, but I wouldn't pay full price for it unless someone could vouch that the conditioning has significantly improved.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Saturday looks rather iffy, with temps in the low 40's, a 15 mph wind coming off the lake, and a 50% a rain through most of the day. I'll probably wait until Saturday morning, look at the radar, and see if there's a clear area on the radar.

Yup, this weekend doesn't look too bueno for golf.

A buddy texted me saying RF is $39w/cart through mid-May. If that's the case, Imma have to go hit that.

Regarding Greg Martin; how long ago was the renovation at Prairie Bluffs? It was a dozen years ago, at least, when I played it but I remember liking it. It would be really nice if it played firmer. Chicago Highlands is about the firmest playing course in the area that I can think of. Phillips Park I liked a lot. Two quite different 9's as I recall. The front 9 is flatter than the back, but still interesting in general design and bunkering. The back 9 reminded me a little bit of Downers Grove. Good stuff, but I thought it was kind of a pain in the a** to get to, so I haven't been back. Carillon (Romeoville) was meh. Very flat and the design had to be tailored to a large residential development. And a friend hit another friend in the temple coming out of a bunker on the 18th green. Talk about a skulled shot...!

Desperation is a stinky cologne. They need business after word got out that the maintenance had gotten bad. The big cash cow at RF is events but, with country clubs hurting for members and willing to let large groups use the course, that also cut into their revenue stream. At least they didn't pull a Dubs and jack up the price to justify the cost of updating the course. Granted, the changes made at RF weren't nearly as extreme.

A open letter to the Chicago golf community, i.e. a mea culpa, might go a long way towards reestablishing some faith. "We screwed up. We got cheap. We let service degrade. We let conditions deteriorate. We're fixing that. Please give us another chance. Come out and see for yourself. Enjoy a discounted round, a brat, and a beer".

It looks like EZLinks is currently down. The courses using the booking engine can't take online reservations.

Oy. When one is a golf addict, one does some nutty stuff. I booked a 7:53 am tee time at Fresh Meadow tomorrow morning. The forecast has pushed the rain out a bit, so perhaps a quick round in the early morning is possible. If the rain comes, well, I won't feel bad walking off FM. With 15 to 20 mph NE winds and temps in the low 40's, it's not going to be the most pleasant round.

Anyone care to join? The tee sheet is pretty much wide open.

Took day off to golf my first round of the year and the rain stayed away

Steeplechase has a $32 deal for april.

They did punch their greens sunday, but with small (1/4") tines so the ball rolled pretty well

Overall the course is in great shape

bummer we're bound for another soaking but so it goes...

Haha well Fresh Ghettos is my "couldn't find anything else" course (their grass range is actually decent) but on a questionable weather day I suppose it would be a good choice. This weekend sounds more like hit the range between storms kind of thing to me.

The upcoming rain is only going to allow me to play one round tomorrow so I figured I'd better get in 18 holes after work today. I played Stonewall Orchard, which was in excellent shape, though it's been in great condition every time I've played there. I shot a 74 with birdies on 9 and 12. My driver was only so-so but my iron and wedge play was really crisp. Up at 4:15 am tomorrow for an early tee time at HOE.
