Joe Buck interview

Just read through the Golf Digest interview of Joe Buck as we get closer to the US Open. I must say personally I am more interested and optimistic about him doing the US Open after reading this interview.

FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN. That's what this U.S. Open is for me, and I haven't felt this way since I called my first World Series, in 1996. Back then I had this sensation in the pit of my stomach, this nervousness, that took me right to the edge. And that's how hosting the U.S. Open for Fox is. Having done 17 World Series and being in the broadcasting business for almost 25 years, it's not a literal fear. But it's something I think about every day and night.

 

WE DID THESE DRY RUNS AT PINEHURST, using a feed from Golf Channel. Greg [Norman] and I did 20 hours, and when it's over I get the tape, go home and watch it. My wife, Michelle, is there, as are daughters Natalie, 18, and Trudy, 15. Two minutes into it, Trudy says, "It sounds like you're doing football, Dad. Doesn't sound like golf." Note to self: new golf tone needed.

I know nothing about Joe Buck and hate to see NBC lose the US Open, but I think Greg Norman will be an excellent announcer.

as a life long Cardinals fan I am excited to see what Joe has to offer for the golf community. (For those who don't know his dad was the voice of Cardinal baseball for decades.) I do have to admit that while I do enjoy listening to him call baseball games I was never a fan of listening to him call a football game.

Great article. Joe Buck is great in everything; kind of like Mike Tiroco, jack of all trades. He'll do well.

Not a big fan of Joe Buck...the Golf Digest interview was interesting though.

He mentioned that FOX is going to have microphones everywhere and really try to pull in player/caddie conversations etc and let that be part of the storyline.

I think its a cool idea...just not sure how there are going to monitor and control all of the ahem..."colorful" language that will be very present.

Like him or not, Joe Buck has called the biggest moments in a lot of sporting environments. He is a professional and will be good at this, maybe not right away, but he will be good at it. I'm not so sure about Norman, loved him as a player but Greg has an even higher propensity than Johnny Miller to inject himself into the conversation for comparison to the current upper echelon guys. If Greg can not talk about Greg, the coverage will be better off for it.

The fact that they did 'dry runs' of Pinehurst coverage to review later is impressive, I would've thought that they were using the USGA 4-ball as their warm up, work out the kinks, etc.

I think things will be fine, once they get a few bugs worked out. Fox appears to be investing a chunk of cash into golf coverage. I'm anxious to see the product.

My fear is that to make money commercial time may increase. Hope that's not the case, but we'll see.....

I have no clue about Joe Buck but I think we can all count on the fact that Norman is going to say many things that are going to have the Golf Universe exploding. Plus, he'll be flirting with Holly Sonders and that should make things interesting.

After Joe Bucks performance during the World Series i have no desire to ever watch something he is working. I have the feeling Joe will drool over Rory the way he did over Bumgarner .

Rory is a great player and I am a fan but i dont want the announcers acting like they would walk through fire to smell a players fart.

It's funny to hear this because as SF Giants Fan there is a large "hate" for Joe Buck out here. A lot of it had to do with how he called the Cards vs Giants series over the last decade.

I love watching the U.S. Open but with Buck doing it I'm going to have to listen with the sound off. He's almost as annoying as Curtis Strange.

In St.louis people say just the opposite and that he roots for the other team too much.

I don't know if he'll do a great job or not. But reading the article at least let me know that he has played golf and seems to care about golf. If he can tone down the baseball & football joe buck voice he should do ok.

Ever since he called Randy Moss' fake moon a "disgusting act", I've hated him as an announcer. This will tank as badly as Gus Johnson trying to call soccer.

That's what I will always associate Joe Buck with. Such a boneheaded moment. Randy Moss scores and then has some fun rubbing it in the faces of Packers fans. Nobody likes Randy Moss but that was all in good fun. What good is a rivalry if you can't taunt the hometown fans a little. Then Joe Buck has to ruin it with his pompous phony outrage. He could not have come off any phonier or more clueless than in that moment. But I'm sure he regrets it now.

Then again Tiger will probably let out an f-word at the US Open and Buck will be right there to declare that it's unfortunate that it went out live on our air.

Beat me to it haha. I don't know if I should feel bad for Buck about the way Artie acted but for some reason I've hated him and liked Artie ever since I saw it.

Announcers all bloviate when they're witnessing a historical sporting performance, as they should. Just hurts when you're on the wrong end of that performance I suppose.

Well, I can tell I'll be wearing out the FF and MUTE buttons on my DVR for that one. The only announcer worse than Buck is Bob Costas. Norman will probably be pretty good.
