Red Rocks area

Wife and daughter are attending a fitness thing at Red Rocks Saturday morning the 18th this month.

I was wondering if there is a course close by that I could get on on Saturday morning with a chance of finishing in four hours. It looks like I'll need to drop them off by 6:30 or so.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Fox Hollow is your best bet, followed by Fossil Trace (in Golden) or The Meadows. FH and FT are better courses, but The Meadows is not too bad. Deer Creek is just south of The Meadows and is a decent track as well.

Bear Dance is private. Some people really like the course, but I much prefer Fox Hollow.

You will need to be in one of the first groups out to finish in 4. Could always play 9 and then get a nice breakfast somewhere.

Thanks.

I may have just a little more time than I thought, so hopefully I'll be able to finish. Although just playing nine would take a lot of the pressure off time wise.

I've read an awful lot on here about Fossil Trace, that really intrigues me.

I'd to play somewhere new and since I've played Fox Hollow I would kind of like to try a different course.

Fossil Trace is a unique course. Many people do not like it, but I think it is wonderful. Very much a Jim Engh design, maybe one of his most interesting given the space he had for the design. It is less than 15 minutes up the road from Red Rocks. If you keep your ball in play it is fairly forgiving. There are some holes that will tempt you to bite off more than you may want to, and there are others that give you plenty to play with. Decent range and a very good grill.

If you've played Fox Hollow, I would not recommend The Meadows. Meadows is a very good public course, but not in the same league as FH, FT, or Deer Creek just down the road. I've played Deer Creek twice and enjoyed both rounds, but it would be a distant third on my list behind Fox Hollow and Fossil Trace. I think you can make tee times a few weeks in advance at Fossil Trace, so that may help in getting an early time.

Of all the Engh designs I've played, Fossil Trace is second on my list (behind Redlands Mesa in Grand Junction) and one of my favorite courses on the Front Range.

Enjoy your trip!

Agreed but Harmony is up there for me too! Can't forget Sanctuary either!

Fossil Trace is the closest (public) golf course. Literally 15 minutes from the Red Rocks parking lot to the golf course parking lot.

I'm assuming they wouldn't let a single out on a Saturday morning. Are the chances usually pretty good of getting paired up?

First tee-time is at 6am. How about they drop you off at the golf course, and they pick you up afterwards?

Problem is they go til 1:00. I'd have an awful long wait for them to finish.

I am pretty sure they let people out on the back first thing, even singles. The only challenge is finding a group for the front if you decide on this.

Yeah, I suppose trying to come around and get out on #1 would be difficult then. I think I'd rather take my chances on them pairing me with someone. Might meet someone really fun to play with...........of course it wouldn't be the same for them having to play with me. :)

Thanks guys!

Booked a 6:50 tee time for Fossil Trace. Their website makes a lot of talk about pace of play, 4:40 total. If they hold to that it should work perfect for me.

With plenty of time to have lunch at Ship Rock Grill and enjoy the beauty that is Red Rocks. Have fun!

Hmmm... just noticed there is a concert there starting at 5pm, so the Grill may not be open at that time. May want to call to find out. I was also going to suggest staying for a concert, but I'm going to take a wild guess and say you're not an EDM fan.

Are you guys going to make fun of me if I tell you I don't who either of them are!?

By the way, there is one more spot at that 6:50 time if any WRX'ers want to join a old guy who doesn't know about current music!

I might be playing Fossil Traceon the 18th, but my folks are in town so we'll need 3 (and 6:50 is too early for the ...).

I'll be the guy that does not look like a player and backs that up with my play.

Enjoy the course!

  • 2 weeks later...

I really enjoyed the course. A lot of interesting holes. Playing off the slopes around the greens was a lot of fun. A lot of different shots.

We waited on just about every shot all day, but finished in 4:40 which I think is their target time.

The service was outstanding, of course the girl in the proshop had an Austrailian accent which is just music to my ears!
