Reccomend courses to play in Denver and Breckenridge areas

Ricky Ross

Recommended Posts

Going to be in Denver/Breckenridge August 6th-12th. Going to be golfing everyday. Recommend some courses to play in these areas. Budget is around $70 per round max since we will be playing 6 days straight.

Also if you can recommend some good fishing areas that would be great also but I realize this is probably a longshot being a golf forum.

Any particular region in Denver you're going to be in? Any limits as how far you will travel?

As for Summit County, the only place under $70 is Copper Mountain's Copper Creek. I haven't played it, but I've heard it's not very good.

Working on that as we speak,. Don't know Denver area very well so if you could suggest somewhere centrally located so we're not driving from one side of town to the other just to play golf that would be great.

Also if anyone wants to join us let me know. Might have room for 1-2 extra per day if you don't mind playing 5.

Swede is correct. The mountain course (along 70) are pretty expensive.. and Copper isn't great.

Have you narrowed down where you'll be staying? Denver and Breck are about 1.5 hrs apart depending on traffic. If you can give us an idea of where you'll be staying, we can definitely recommend some courses.

It's a little more difficult because there aren't really pockets of inexpensive golf courses in the Denver area. Staying in downtown can be expensive (not to mention having to pay for parking); so the next best thing might be Cherry Creek area (but you still may have to pay for parking). The third best option with lots of hotels may be DTC, which is on the southern edge of Denver County.

Course recommendations within your budget include (in no particular order):
* Wellshire (Donald Ross-designed muni course) - closest to downtown DTC
* Riverdale Dunes - northeast
* Buffalo Run - north
* Murphy Creek - east
* Saddle Rock - southeast
* Commonground - central-ish
* South Suburban (third furthest away) - southwest
* Fox Hollow - west
* Indian Peaks - way north
* Hyland Hills Gold - northwest

The Raven is about 30 mins outside Breck and the Keystone River course is good as well but both above $100/rd last time I checked.

The Raven at Three Peaks is a great track. If your budget is $70, get on GolfNow and find a tee time later in the evening. I typically find them around the 4:00-5:30 slots for as cheap as $55. That course is going to give you some crazy great views of Silverthorne, part of the 10 Mile Range and even the ski slopes at Keystone.

Keystone River Course is by far my favorite track in the Summit County area. However, it's more expensive. If you can get out there, I would suggest doing so even if it means paying a little more. It's just an amazing track with some spectacular views.

Right next to the River course is Keystone Ranch Course. It's a links style course that sits in a valley. There are a bunch of old barns/houses that sit on the property and provide some great photo ops. This costs about the same as the River Course, but I would recommend the River over the Ranch.

Copper Mountain compared to the others is not a great track, but it's still fun to play. I haven't played it the last few seasons though, so I'm not up to date on its condition.

Breckenridge Golf Club has three 9 hole tracks that sit in the valley across from the 10 Mile Range and provide some pretty pleasing views. It's a more "relaxed" layout compared to Raven and River Course in terms of elevation change and playing on the mountain. It's still a fun course to play.

All in all you can't go wrong. Summit County is my 2nd home and I love that area. I'm there 4-5 times a year playing golf in the summer and on the slopes in the winter.

One last thing, the Raven course sometimes sends out "Package Deals" where you can buy X amount of rounds at a discounted price. Last year we bought 8 rounds and it ended up being around $80 per round and you can play in the morning during peak hours. That might get you on that course for a good price! Hope this helps and please message me if I can help you out at all.

To stay anywhere close to your budget is Summit County, you'll have to tee off after 4pm. IIRC, Raven at Three Peaks can be found on Golf Now.

Hey man, just noticed your post here. I also put a comment on your other post in another forum. For Denver area, the two I've played that I always recommend are Riverdale Dunes and Meadow Hills.

Sort of tough to say since we don't know your schedule, but if I had to recommend some of my favorites in the metro area:

On the west side:
Arrowhead
Fossil trace
Fox hollow

East side:
Murphy creek
Green valley ranch

North:
Riverdale
Indian peaks

South:
The ridge
Broadmoor

Only courses id recommend in the city are country clubs. Otherwise just as you'd expect the courses in the middle of the city are meh.

Arrowhead vs Riverdale Dunes? any plus' or minus' to either?
[/quote]

If you want scenery, and it's really awesome, definitely go with Arrowhead. If you want a Pete Dye course that's also a great value, then Riverdale Dunes.

The only other public course on the west side worth considering is probably Fox Hollow. It's a nice course, but it will pale in comparison to the other three you are playing.

Very different courses and locations. Dunes is north east
Arrowhead is south west

Dunes might have a better technical course, but you cannot beat the views of arrowhead. Dunes is nice but I've played other courses similar to it. Won't find anywhere else like arrowhead.

I've heard Colorado Nationals greens are terrible right now. Slow, bumpy, just definitely not how they should be running this time of year. Check out the GolfNow reviews.

Thanks for the heads up, and it does seem to be the case judging by all recent reviews, guess im back to searching for a course...
