Adding V hem to pants, DIY with pics

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, been planning to do this post for a while now, just havent had much time. Long story short, its incredibly easy to add the V hem to pants that arent golf specific, or golf pants that dont have one, and most tailors charge between 10-15 bucks for what is pretty much 5 minutes once you figure it out, so its an easy way to add your own touch and save money.

before anyone starts in with the macho guy stuff, dont bother. I bought my wife an expensive sewing machine that she had to have and she never touched it, so I figured Id give it a go and Ive made some pretty cool golf related items with zero sewing experience. Plus ive got a really cool beard that oozes machismo, so there.

So here we go. These are the pants I started with, they are the champion brand from target, and this cuff at the bottom is the absolute hardest to work with, as its got a lot of stitches and fabric tucked in, but do not fret, this pair took 10 minutes, the other pair thats at the end took literally one minute.

Here's the seams at the bottom:

IMG_1579_zps4qwgtil1.jpg

Using a seam ripper(like $3 bucks at any fabric store), pull the existing stitches out up to the area that you want the top of the v, usually about one inch.:

Once youve done that, on this style youll have some fabric that overlaps, so you need to cut a little slit to the fabric so you can fold it back and make it flush with the old seam, making the V

IMG_1583_zpsqxbwlwtx.jpg

IMG_1589_zpsj7e5tfak.jpg

After youve made the slit, use some double sided seam tape and tape the fabric down to make it flush:

IMG_1587_zpsjnehc5cm.jpg

IMG_1588_zpsgwewl8q6.jpg

IMG_1585_zpsyhn43zuc.jpg

see how Ive cut it to length, stuck it to the fabric then folded it over? Ok, thats all the prep work, now time to sew them up!

IMG_1591_zpsl124p0fm.jpg

Then you sew along the folded line of the fabric so it stays back, and I just make like a trace outside of the V, adding some durability so it doesnt split open wider. Any stray threads can be cut or burnt off using a lighter.

All done, now floss like Rick Ross eating apple sauce. BAWSE!

So these are the other style that are super easy, and the seam of most dress pants. All you have to do is pop the thread holding the seam, and sew a small line across the top of the v to keep them from opening up more, usually just right above the natural cuff line: See how there isnt any huge seam or folded fabric, just two pieces joining?

Pop the middle stitch and there you go!

Let me know if you guys have any questions! If you guys dont have enough security in your masculinity, ask your wives to do it for you, its seriously so(sew har har) easy!

It's seriously easy dude, and really easy to practice on like an old t shirt and stuff. I've used it to make some diy yardage stick covers too, and I'm planning on sewing headcovers too!

Here's the yardage stick covers

Awesome. I've been trying to talk the Mrs into a sewing machine in our laundry room...so I can try it out. I spend so much money on tailoring...great skill to have!!

I've got about 25 pairs of golf pants (I know) so I mean I've saved almost $300 on doing it myself vs tailor. I've been trying to improve my skills so I can slim up the fit of some pants, actually considering taking a class. Once I can do that, sky's the limit hah

That's awesome!! No shame in it at all. If you're competent, you'll always get the way you like...pretty cool that you're experimenting.

I paid a lady 5$ a pair to do that to my Cool 18 golf pants.
[/quote]

Not a bad deal! Just saying that if anyone wants to do it themselves then this is how. Hey if someone wants to pay me $60/hr to do this then maybe I'll make it a full time job haha!

Not too tough to do, just takes a little more time and precision!

I actually did the opposite with a pair of pants, I usually wear 36x32 but found a pair of tan Nike tech pants in 36x30 for like $8 at Pga, so I figured I'd experiment on them. I let out the cuff, ironed the fabric and redid them with a v hem and smaller cuff and now they are 31.5 inseam and you can't even notice

Ha I hear you!

I kind of liken this to regripping your clubs, it's like once you do it yourself, you kind of think "wow that was super easy, why did I ever pay anyone to do this for me?"
