Pro V1, too much spin?

GolfyGolfy

Recommended Posts

Didnt know where to put this topic but just played my first round with this ball. Got some used and wanted to try it out. Anyways coming off Zstars and E6s. They usually stop right around where my ball mark is, but on a couple occasions it had too much spin and just rolled off the green. Looks cool but it was just too much. I know this is a technique issue but how can I reduce that spin with this ball. Love the squish that I get from it off the club but is there another ball as soft that wont spin as much...I dont want to totally go the opposite direction but something close.

Thanks and sorry Im new to this game.

I agree. The V1 is the most wonderful ball I can't use. I yank them all right off the green. Ninja style.

Really, though. They do spin way too much for me as well.

It was cool to see at first but I don't have that kind of accuracy to over shoot the pin just to bring it back. PUTTCURSEREPEAT, my trajectory is really high and I don't take any divot really. I will definitely look into the b330-rx, but does it matter if my SS is around 105 +/-3. Thanks again for the responses.

You can always try a low compression non-tour ball (Wilson DUO, Top Flite Gamer Soft, etc) and you'll maintain the soft feel but drop a bunch of spin. Or go for a harder tour ball like a Srixon Z Star XV (my favorite as I'm a high spin player).

I do like the Z Star XV when the greens are soft, doesn't over spin, though I'm on my last dozen of yellow 2012's.

But be careful with these balls in the cold. I tee'd off when it was 45 degrees last Sunday, drive came up a little shorter than usual, but I had a typical PW into the green. I thought I flushed it, but it came up 10 yards short of the green! These high compression balls do NOT like cold weather! Was short all day.

^Like most problems in golf, things can be solved by simply hitting the ball harder!

I'd say try a slightly firmer ball. Like a ProV1x. I hit a high ball that hops and stops from trajectory as well. I've had some PW approaches spin back and off the greens with ProV1s and recently the project a.

I've played a couple rounds with the TF Gamer Tour and it seems to hop and stop pretty well. It's the same construction as the regular gamer but has a urethane cover like prov1/zstars/b330s/etc. The price is also very reasonable.

I made the switch to NXT Tour S this year. Perfect amount of spin for me on approach shots and I just got used to the ball rolling out some when chipping around the green. I don't have enough time to change my swing to spin the ball less on approach shots in to the green.

I agree that the V1 spins quite a bit, I can't use it, I have a very agressive/quick tempo swing (114 driver SS) and put a lot of spin on my short irons, after many trials, I ended up playing the Chrome Soft, it gives me just enough spin to one hop and stop or back up about a foot and it is long off the tee...good luck.

Exactly...just use the ProV1x instead

  • 3 weeks later...

ProV's are great off my irons, but not the best off driver, due to AoA creating too much spin... My compromise is ProV1X or SR2.

PS: I find it interesting people suggest ProV spins back excessively with irons. On tour ProV and ProV1 are most used balls and they are designed to slow iron spin, reason we don't see excessive back spin by touring pros, as opposed to earlier versions. Golfwrx people do what touring pros don't. WOW>

The 105 MPH designation is not a hard and fast rule, more of a guideline. A softer compression ball is more forgiving and that is what most amateurs need.

I would recommend the B330 RXS. It is a little softer cover than the RX to give you better feel around the greens. Kind of a mix of the ProV1 and e6.

I think the reason you don't see excessive back spin by touring pros is because they are able to control spin. Not because they aren't able to create it..

Sounds like average golfer perceptions of tour players. I still spin the ball quite a bit with irons because I hit the ball with the right impact angle, and I am in my mid-60's. The only way to slow spin is changing shot type... full swing to less than full, not hit so hard, square face vs, angle, using more club than needed or punch shot, etc. They have the same options of ball control as the rest of us golfers. My point is amateurs need to invest in greater ball control, as opposed thinking ball change is the answer.

For years, tour players have requested OEM companies like Titleist to slow ball spin. They have done that. Reason we see less back spin taking the ball off the green or back 20' on relatively flat surfaces. I use to play Balata and Professional 90/100's then to ProV and ProV1x, among others. Comparatively speaking, they have lessened ball spin. In the end, pro or amateur, there is only so much a player can do to control spin. Players just need to realize their limitations and improve them as opposed to changing equipment.
