Wearing Rolex submariner on the golf course.....

Recommended Posts

My goodness all the flak op is getting is a little crazy. The submariner, while a nice watch, Isn't that crazy and can be had for less than some of the Scottys that sell on here. To answer the question, just about any dive watch is perfectly fine on the golf course. They are made to withstand extreme pressure and the golf swing will do nothing compared to 1000 ft under water. If your watch is 18k+ gold I would be careful because it could ding fairly easily.

Are the links in the bracelet forged or cast?

Actually, older ones were cast but they don't do that anymore. The modern ones are forged.

I am never without watch on my wrist. I have been a watch collector for over 35 yrs.

I know how and have serviced many watches including Rolex and Omega.

While it is not "advised " there is no harm unless you are someone that hits down so hard you leave ankle breaking divots. I would caution against wearing vintage pieces and prefer to wear my quartz watches when I play.

I say wear it,enjoy it and make sure you have it serviced every 6-8yrs.

Would it be safe to wear the Rolex on the golf course. I don't want to break the thing. Any advice anyone?

To answer the question truthfully, I'd say wear your Rolex on the course or anywhere else. They're hardy creatures. Through the years, I've seen most older guys have worn watches while playing golf. This was in the stone age, before cell phones and other useless devices. All makes and models, cheap and expensive, I never heard of a guy complaining his watch was ruined golfing with it. I would suggest a leather or rubber strap for comfort. I bought a SS Datejust back in 1978 when they were relatively cheap, $300. Back then, I didn't even give it a thought that it was some major status symbol.

I've worn it on a golf course, but even with a leather strap, no watch is comfortable while playing. And of course, the Rolex police will confiscate mine with its $20 strap, instead of the official $300 strap. I keep my watch at home when I golf.

Rolexes are like anything other "luxury" item, basically a waste of money. I cherish a Wittnauer tank wristwatch my Dad bought in 1947 for $35. He gave it to me when I was in HS. It's been repaired twice in its lifetime, the last time in 1989, for $53, which included the dial redone.

Whatever floats your boat. Wear your watch in good health.

Wasted my Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Playing golf, that's a 20.000€+ watch. Just wanted to hit a couple of shots after work and didn't want to leave it in the car as the car park is remote. Chronograph stopped working, 4.000€ repair. So I spent a Rolex just hitting a few balls.

Sadly, AP is one of the most advertised watchmakers on the tour.... Maybe need to switch to Richard Mille as bubba is wearing his on the course? Or maybe he gets replacements after each hole ;)

Even though a Rolex might be robust I still wouldn't want to expose any watch anymore to the forces a golf swing can unleash. I wear mine for gardening, car wash or whatever, but Golf seems to be tough on watches.

seriously! a couple of shots killed a 20 grand watch! what a really poor quality product that is.

I have a 12 year old Tag, played golf, hit ranges, gone swimming and still works perfectly. Cost $900 new

What's the point of having a high end rugged and sporty diving type watch if you can't wear it while playing your sport?

Seriously though, I wear my watch (Datejust Turnograph) when I play mostly because I'd probably lose the damned thing if I took it on and off all the time. Cheaper to pay for service/repair than to have to replace it!

To be fair, the Submariner (or most Rolex watches) were not designed to deal with the g-forces encountered during a golf swing (look them up...they range from 20Gs and up) repeatedly. This is why so many watch enthusiasts and experts recommend to not wear them during tennis or golf, unless they are specifically designed to deal with those forces, like the Richard Mille watches that Nadal (tennis) and Bubba (golf) wear during their sport.

My question is why would you waste that much money on something that only tells you the time in the first place.

for many people watches nowadays are no longer " something that only tells time,"

it is more like a piece of jewelry that reflects a person's sense of style and oftentimes also their personality...

i have several watches which i try to match to the occasion and my outfits and i suspect many of us here are the same..

nothing wrong with those who only wear or buy watches for the sole purpose of telling time...but that's pretty boring-----for me.

Yes absolutely. If you're comfortable swinging with it on, and prefer it, go for it.

I wore my Rolex (has the same exact movement as the Sub) while golfing for a couple years when I had it on a nylon diving strap (fairly comfortable) but stopped when I switched it back over to the Oyster bracelet simply due to comfort. Those movements are built like tanks, which is the nice thing about Rolex.

My good friend wears his Sub while golfing on its bracelet, and has for over a decade. He never takes it off. He plays 50+ times per year and swings about 110 MPH so speed isn't an issue.

Bottom line, absolutely safe. Whatever you prefer.

Other than Bubba...whom others have already mentioned...

Off the top of my head, I can only recall Phil Mickelson regularly wearing a thinner, "dressier", leather-strapped watch while playing. As others have mentioned, most players put it on immediately after their round. If it didn't bother them or they thought it helped them during their round, I'm sure more players would wear them. End of story.

To me, wearing a high-end watch on the golf course is gauche. And it's double-gauche if it's worn on same hand as your golf glove.

A lot of helpful responses here

The question I need answered is should I bring my mistress Kate Upton to the course and have her drive the cart or leave her at home to do the laundry and make dinner?
