Received this email this morning and while it would be an awesome experience it's just feels so overpriced. 

 

Can 't believe how expensive golf has suddenly become, I know golf clubs want to recoup the losses made over covid but checking the pebble beach website the cheapest hotel room is  $980 per night for a 1 bed room.

The other thing it does along with adjust lie and is alter draw and fade bias.

 

 

 

By way of changing the face angle at address.  Once read a mind numbing discussion about face angle changes relative to loft changes when adjusting.  Opening or closing the FA depending on the direction.  Likely could be found with a search if inclined.

 

As a lifelong fader (or worse), peering down at a clubhead with the appearance of an open face is not a confidence inspiring look.

I actually set up with the club slightly open, not much, maybe a degree or two but enough that I'll play with friends and they often ask, how do you hit that shot from an open face. I don't notice it and it's purely and aesthetic thing for me, since a square face just looks left and no loft compared to a fraction open face.

I ran across this quite by accident with my first adjustable driver.  The solution was to flatten the lie angle by reducing loft to remedy a smother hook.  It was completely counter intuitive until you realize that the head is the fixed point and it is the shaft that rotates on a concentric.

 

I have had two adjustable drivers and I can't honestly say that either has added anything to the equation versus a glued shaft which is what I'm using now.  The only other time that adjustability helped with the result was when I was able to make a hybrid more upright to better match my irons.  That was a plus.

The golf bag I ordered arrived yesterday afternoon.  What a difference it makes when UPS is doing the delivery versus Canada Post!  At any rate, first things first:

• It's a really light bag, less than 5#.  Considering it has 14 full length dividers there are some compromises.
• The material is noticeably lighter than the material used in my other bags.  Durability?
• Designed for a push cart rather than a power cart as there is no strap passthrough or forward grab handle.
• Lack of an insulated beverage pocket although there is a low front pocket that would suffice for that purpose.
• Single valuables pocket with weatherproof zipper
• Rain hood included
• Good quality zippers

It's a pretty basic bag.  Classic case of you get what you pay for as this bag was regular $220 up here on sale for $170.  Comparatively Ping, Titleist, Sun Mountain are around the $300 mark and don't go on sale.  In fact, I've seen used Titleist bags going for $240 at Golfavenue! 

 

If you're in an area with good thrift/second hand shops then they are definitely worth exploring for good used bags at better prices.  The last bag I bought I paid $30 for a Callaway 3-way stand bag at a swap meet.  That was 4 years ago and I had been using it since then, but it doesn't work very well on a trolley.  The new one will be an improvement in that regard.

@Fellaheen51I was very surprised at the price of golf clubs. For example, the new Callaway driver over $500, and $185 per iron in the Apex line, $205 per club at Titleist, etc. Looks like my clubs aren't going anywhere for a good long time, lol.

My last couple of drivers have been adjustable which I completely understand is a god send for fitters however, for each of my last driver fittings I have walked out with a driver set to standard so for the Titleist that is A1 which makes the adjustability pointless for me. 

 

I like the face on my clubs neutral, learning to play in the late 90's meant it was before all the game improvement, adjustable clubs were a real thing so you learnt to play "correctly" as the clubs would fight you otherwise.

Best driver I have ever played was a TM R7 425 with the stock 60g R flex shaft.  I used it for the better part of 10 years.  I have been searching for a suitable replacement ever since.

 

It was 11.5° head with a 45" shaft and lie angle of 58.5° and the face was 1° closed. Those are kind of my reference points which I tried to replicate with the 913 D2 I had that was a 12° head.  I got fairly close with that, but it never had the length as it was quite a bit lighter.

 

The current Wilson is OK as it is controllable, but I`m still trying to figure out the best set-up to maximize distance as I`m not catching it quite right.  I`ll continue to play with ball position and tee height.

I think that we all would be doing deals for new kit at those sorts of discounts, especially when you get rid of the old stuff as part of the deal. 

 

Since the pandemic started I have done a couple of used club deals selling to an online reseller up here.  It's pretty slick in that you tell them what you have and they give you a quote.  You pick cash or store credit.  The store credit is about 25% higher.  If you agree with the quote they give you a label to print off that covers postage.  Pack up the old clubs and take them to the post office and the job is done.  When they get your clubs and inspect them, they money will show up in your account or they send the cheque.  The downside is that you get about 30 cents on the dollar versus what they will sell them for, but they do cover shipping both ways, so it's not quite as bad as it seems.  I'm still getting more than what I see the young couple on Stacked Golf paying for used clubs in Florida.

Had a good day and a bad day. Painting day and started a new work, spent the whole day, drawing fixing the drawing, washing over with base colour only to decide I liked the subject but not the way I had presented it.

 

Another day to remove it and start again, learned something , if you are definite dont do it 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Was going to post much the same sentiment as this.  Don't have this lifetime of history playing golf.  But before the Age of Adjustability one made corrections by grip, swing, address to get things straightened out. Why even now, I resist the idea of draw bias drivers being beneficial to cure my fade tendencies.  This false notion of "What happens when/if I fix it?  Will I then have an uncontrollable hook?"  I keep another of Trevino's truisms in my head, "You can talk to a fade...."

 

Got confused when I was at spinning the TruFit dial on my 910.  Started hooking badly.  Reset to square one and left it alone thereafter.  Can't imagine attempting to "adjust" these new D's with all manner of sliding weights back and forth, spinning around, with just enough information to be dangerous.  Do they supply a manual?  

 

Another of the pitfalls of being a decidedly average golfer, not entirely understanding what I'm doing, while continuing down a DIY pathway attempting to figure things out on the fly.  Or.....Ignorance is Bliss.  We persevere.

Never held or come across an adjustable driver. Son and I exchanged drivers years ago and played them ever since, neither of us could use the one we had but were good when exchanged. 
 

I developed a bad hook and at a group training session the coach showed me how to adjust my grip to eliminate it, been good ever since.

 

I can understand how golfers can adjust and fine tune clubs, but it has never been my thing. I suppose if I was better at the game it would make a difference.

I never adjust my clubs, I've had the same set up since I can remember. 

 

Irons are 1/2 inch shorter than "standard", however in reality since everything keeps changing I measure of my existing 8 iron and go from there. They are also 1 degree flat. 

Driver is set to neutral, seems to be how my fittings come out and then I never change them. I keep the key in my bag but have never used it, just give it to friends who are always changing things mid round.

Wedges are the only place I'm likely to change. I'm think of going down to 2 wedges for my next set and still figuring out bounce and grind options. When it's time to purchase I'll spend and hour or two with my pro testing the options to find what works best. 

If I have a golf club vice it's the putter. While I only own 5, 4 of them are the same shape and design just different manufactures and inserts. This is where I am currently testing new things off the back of my static fitting two weeks ago.

Gee Tol, that sounds like golf. 😉 Playing this game, we should be pretty good at dealing with frustration, lol. It wasn't a total loss, at least you learned something, and if painting were similar to golf, you would be a + HI. I, on the other hand, would be a 30 HI, lol.

It's pretty new.  Nothing more than say 3 model years back.  That may not be new in WRX terms, but it's new versus what the guys that I play with are using.  😉

@Jedaigeki  Yeah, one's setup is their setup.  Especially with irons.  Our stature doesn't change.  Our posture at address, by now, is mostly a constant.  Perhaps a swing mod would cause a minor adjustment in lies.  The first thing to be addressed with a new build, or mod on a set of classic irons, is to set my preferred club lengths.  I'm taller with shortish arms (38.5" WTF), kind of a weird 'fitting' slot.  Really dislike the sensation of bending over, reaching for the ball.  Saying my irons are "x" inch long is not relevant absent a reference.  Know what my preferred 7 iron length is (37.75") and work off of that using .5" increments to the 9, .25" to the P & GW, .25" to SW.  Then adjust lies accordingly after some ball striking, observing the results.  Although don't require absolute preciseness with lies.  If it's close (+/- 1*), I'm good.  Heck, my swing and delivery of the clubhead will have a greater variance than that with any given swing.  

 

Only bag down to a 6 iron now, and that's becoming suspect.   If I was playing long irons, would likely give 3/8" increments serious consideration.  Longer the club, length absolutes become less important.  Thereby making the long irons bit shorter, and reducing the unwieldiness, better control.  Only utilizing 6 and up, becomes an inconsequential exercise.  

 

You piqued my curiosity.  Why is your pro attempting to move you into G410's.  Seems as though they  are significantly different irons than you're accustomed to with the AP2's.  Would have thought i210's would be his suggested Ping alternative.  Curious what his arguments are, what potential benefits would be realized.  Nothing against either, by all accounts both are good implements, if they match one's preferences and game.

@Reasonability Sorry, I probably wasn't clear but it's the driver he's trying to get me into a G410. 

 

The irons he has mentioned the I500's a few times however I dislike the feel as they are hollow heads rather than solid forged and also he lofts are more jacked so would have a bigger gap to fill at the bottom end. I don't have a problem hitting a 3 or 2 iron (Carry a TMB 2 Iron) so I'm not worried about getting help with long irons. I just think standing 150yeards out and pulling a PW would throw my brain into a spin so I stick with my standard lofted 8/9 iron.

You and I have a lot of similarities. I know what my specs are as they haven't changed in over 40 years of golf  and I have a loft/lie machine to check them every once in a while. When something works, I don't see a reason to change. My wedges are 2012 models although I've replaced the SW & GW due to wear, with the exact same model wedges. My 8, 9, & P are from 2007 and the 5, 6, & 7 are from 2012 and yes, I have backups for those as well. My 7WD is from 2007, 3&5WD from 2019, and the driver from 2018. The 3&5WD's replaced the same models as my 7WD and the driver replaced the one I'd been bagging since 2012 although I did have a brief affair with a TM JDM SLDR 430. Longest driver I've ever hit but just too much of a wild streak when I needed her the most. I have nothing against adjustability, I just prefer buying the head and shaft with the specs I'm looking for and glue the darned thing. 

 

My putter is another story unto itself. I've had it in the bag since 2006 and I have no plans to change it. I had serious trepidations about re-gripping it back in 2013 and took me 4 tries to get it 'just right'. It also knows there's a backup in the closet in the event it decides to get a little wild as well. I was playing a golf tournament (2-man Best Ball)near Hattiesburg, MS back in 2006. After finishing the round, I was sitting on the deck, overlooking 18 and watching the groups as they came in. I saw a guy (obviously drunk) miss a 3 foot putt, slam his putter into the green, and then toss it as far as he could into the water (a small, 3-foot deep pond, app. 30 feet from the green). My playing partner (sitting with me on the deck) laughed about the guy saying he had more money than good sense as he'd sold the guy the 009, new, app. 3 weeks prior(he'd sold me one previously). Well we waited until all had completed their round and we ended up winning a $300 Titleist gift certificate. After hanging around for another hour or so I hadn't noticed anyone wading into the pond to get the putter. So, I stripped down to my skivvies, waded out there and retrieved it. I went back to the pro shop, re-dressed, and found the owner (who was by now $hit-faced) and asked him about the putter. He said he hated it and if I was dumb enough to go get it, good riddance. I laid the gift certificate on the table as an offer of payment and left. 

 I sent it back to Scotty where they re-shafted it with a 34-inch stepless shaft, installed a Pistolero grip, and a COA. I've never looked back. I intended to give it to my youngest son but he didn't like the beached head so he ended up with my other putter and I've gamed this 34-350 ever since. I ended up with around $200 out of pocket, and consider that a pretty good deal.
