I guess the Weather Channel will report on Florence, and it's impact on Western PA .

Last night, the neighborhood kids (at least 10) were playing football on the three city lots, our lot in the middle. I'm to the point I don't care anymore, but the missus really gets agitated. They're running all over her new $6K sidewalk and patio concrete job. She keeps railing on and on about everyone gets the use of our yard but us. Wants to sell. A fence is the answer. Five fenced in properties are within the block, so I guess that's why all the kids are congregating here.

I told her we'd put up a fence, and the problem is solved. Tell everyone we're getting a Golden Retriever puppy, to legitimize the project. If we get a dog, the better, if not, so what. Neighbors are real pains. "Good fences make good neighbors."

My mother made sure she'd have some kind of confrontation with neighbors. Eliminated all the buddy/buddy nonsense. My dear Aunt Mildred had a neighbor who used to just walk in. Did it for some time after Uncle passed. I used to tell her just walk in on her neighbor. Auntie locked her doors, and the woman never spoke to her after that. (A simple cure.)

The neighbors were quite elderly, (Aunt Mildred was in her fifties, widowed.) The neighbors moved away to Florida or whatever, and she never got along with the new owners, so no problems.

Life in paradise.

I guess we're going to find out about these sorts of things as our next house will be in the city/town. I remember that my in-laws had nosy next door neighbours on one side and a recluse that let his property go to pot on the other. The nosy neighbour was innocent enough, but she always had to make a point of coming outside to work in her garden if we were having a family meal on the patio. The people that bought the house after my MIL died put up a 6 ft. tall wood fence as soon as they moved in! Solved two problems simultaneously!

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

If it’s mine it’s mine, no matter what it is, anyone trespassing on my property is told immediately to get off, and I agree with you a fence will fix it. We had a neighbour that played with a ball in his garden and when it came over the fence he thought he could just climb over and get it, only took speaking to him twice to realise his mistake.

We had neighbours in Cornwall UK, who thought walking in was the right thing to do. They had been living in this small village all their lives and thought they owned the district. We moved in and the next day our front door opened and in came the lady, well all hell broke loose. We had a boxer dog who was the best guard dog you could ever want, he was my wife’s dog and no one could touch her, if she made a loud noise he was there guarding her. The neighbour walked in, we did not know her, never met her, DW shouted something and the dog shot full speed across the lounge, the neighbour backed out quickly and slammed the door, the dog in full flight ran into the door head first and split it down the center. Neighbour never came into our yard after that.

Sort them out Wriggs, bad manners that’s all it is, no respect for others properties, you ar too nice sort them out. If you need a hand tell me where you live, I love sorting bad mannered people, something about being a grumpy old bugger.

It certainly will be different for you, after all your privacy, I think you are in for a culture shock. One thing I always do with new neighbours is politely set the boundaries early on, unless it’s like our ex Cornish neighbours then it’s full tilt from day one. We have an electrician neighbour, very friendly good rates for mates, but he never socialises with neighbours, thinks it always leads to trouble. No problems for us, we know where we stand and he always gives us good professional service when we need him. We respect his need for privacy.

Perhaps, but it's not as though I'm completely uninitiated. I live for a couple of years in a high rise dorm when I was going to university, but I suppose that's a bit different in it's own right.

I know that when we sold my MIL's house I was seriously considering buying it because it was a good solid house on a big lot with most of the expensive upgrades already done. An older couple bought it that were downsizing, much like we are now and that is what we are looking for. The only difference is that the houses are now 2 1/2 times the price!!

The up pricing certainly hurts. Our last house was the same price as that we received for the one we were selling, different districts. Selling district prices down, buying district prices way up, difference in houses was immense. Selling 5 acres and a huge house, buying 1/10 acre minute house. Downsizing did not work as it was literally the only house for sale we could afford. We were there 5 years then we moved to our present house, the difference is we purchased with our son so it was easier to fin a good house. Twice the cash to purchase, we also had a really good agent who was on our side with the purchase as the seller has peed him off big time, he also sold our property at a good price. This time we were the winners.

We're battling the remnants of the hurricane here today. We've received 0.02 inches of rain, and I can report to you as I brace myself against the back of the Lazyboy that the the winds are up to 6 mph. I just saw the neighbors walking their dog on the sidewalk out front, but that won't be in my video of course, should I ever make one, so I've got that goin' for me... actually after a light drizzle all day, the sun is starting to come out for what appears will be a very nice sunset.

Rained all day yesterday. Loafed with Penny. I had a hard time getting her back home. She would not budge from the porch. I tried salami, apple, graham crackers. She was determined to stay with us. Finally, I asked the missus to walk over to the neighbor's house. Penny followed her, and we got her back home. What a sweet dog.

Hope it doesn't rain. A much needed outside event is scheduled at the course today. Forty guys from the state police are golfing. The food is getting catered, the better. With cost of food, and help, food sales are at a loss at our course.

So, I won't be golfing, unless I go late afternoon.

Most definitely. Although her family is a Mom, Dad, brother, and sister, I doubt Penny gets the undivided attention she gets with us. I'm sure Penny would rather be with us. She literally glues herself to me. I've been taking care of her since they got her as a 4 month old, over 5 years ago, and I love her as my own.

Cheers!

Here's another interesting vid from Hurricane Harvey... the especially the lady at 9:00 minutes into it, she really gives them what for :)

I guess we're all a little bit guilty in enabling this sort of behavior. We watch what's going on live with some sort of bizzare fascination as disaster draws our focus. Perhaps the most telling for me was the clip with the police officer marshaling evacuees and asking the reporter: Are you coming? She responds we're staying and he just shakes his head in disgust as they proceed to load up the vehicle and head out.

Perhaps we can blame Arthur Kent for this due to live fire reporting during the first Gulf War as bombs and missiles rained down overhead...

Effects of Florence linger. Streets drain to smaller streams/creeks which swell smaller rivers which ultimately overfills larger rivers. Two dams are either failed or about to. Flood watches in those areas. Of the 1 million+ people without power - some will not be able to turn the lights back on until next Wednesday.

But when you put it all in perspective, it could have been much worse. What was a cat 4 was a 1 by the time she hit. Amazing rescues have happened including pets. Charleston SC wasn't untouched but with much of the city below sea-level, surprisingly less death/destruction occurred. Death toll numbers for what just happened could have been staggering and yet the loss of life is relatively low. As ugly as it is, it could have been far worse.

Fences are a good thing I suppose. Protects your property. The backyard is fenced in. I agree that it's worrisome to at least some degree when your property turns into the neighborhood playground.

Here's where I'll talk out of both sides of my face. I recall being a youngster who gathered up with buddies. We were just kids being kids and in no way were we interested in vandalism or trouble. We were just looking for a flat spot to play a little sandlot football or baseball and such. Yet despite the lack of any ill intentions there were always those one or two grumpy old men who would constantly harass us. "You kids need to go play somewhere else! My wife has a headache. BEAT IT!" Even when we were just hanging around on the public streets there were a couple of old farts who couldn't wait to open the front door and blast us.

Kids who could be getting into REAL trouble need a little hangout - for good clean fun. So I surely "get it" that anyone who own private property is more than entitled to keep any/all trespassing in check. Guess I can't ever get that image of the grumpy Gus old farts who used to rip into us at all times when all we were doing was trying to stay out of trouble rather than causing it.

Glad you're doing great Reasy!

On the lighter side...........this funny video of a weather channel guy faking drama while others

stroll by unfazed.

Saw that. Hilarious! Fake news :)

Glad you East guys are safe and well. I imagine my classmate in Asheville will get a lot of rain too. They say between the amount of rain, the storm surge and then the rain expected in the mountains, you could get water coming from all sides!

Mrs. scotee sold our rental house last week in Walla Walla. We bought it when daughter 4 was in college and nursing school. It always rented well but the last renters trashed the place. I was not happy with the property manager. He did not do his job and allowed lots of pet damage when there were supposed to be no pets and other damage. The nice new lawn we put in with sod died and went to weeds. Some of the trees died from lack of water. We had to take out all the carpet and pads. An unreported leak around a sky light did damage that required some re-framiing and sheet rock. All new interior paint. We decided it was not worth the trouble any more. We worked very hard to get it put back together and we decided to do sale by owner to save a bunch of commission. Well good news! The market is hot and we had four serious buyers within a week of planting the for sale sign in the yard. A bidding war broke out and we got a lot more than asking price. We thought our big farm house sold for too little when we moved here and paid top dollar for this place so it was nice to be on the better end of this deal. Mrs. scotee found an agent that is happy to work with sale by owners for a very reasonable fixed fee. Now we hope the appraisal and inspection go well and we can cross off one more headache from our lives. Rentals sux.

A couple down the street from us moved about 30 miles away - and rented their old homestead. Worked out OK for about ten years. In recent years he ends up an amputee (leg). He can't do what he used to do himself to keep the place maintained. A family just moved out about a month ago and there's a FSBO sign in the yard. Guess he saw what you saw... tax breaks are great but cash in-hand at some point isn't a bad thing, especially if the upkeep becomes time/cost consuming. It's a nice property and should sell pretty quick in the current market - at a tidy profit.

So anywho - well played and congrats. One less thing to complicate your lives. (and more time for golf!)

The strawberry crisis has now gone international, New Zealand has banned imports of Australian strawberries, farmers are dumping hundreds of tons they cannot sell and thousands of workers have lost their jobs. Copycats are rife, apples and bananas have been targeted, one 55 year old woman was caught placing a needle in a banana in a supermarket. They have hundreds of police working on it, the government are starting a rescue programme for owners and a $100,000 reward is offered for information.

Let’s hope a breakthrough occurs soon.

We purchased10lb of strawberries today, beautiful juicy strawberries from a local farmer who now runs every package through a metal detector. The 55 year old woman caught putting needles in a banana was given a warning and let go without any charges, the government is now putting forward legislation to make a specific penalty for tampering with food. They had one person cold and let them go, as far as I am concerned they have now told all the idiots capable of doing this it is OK and you will not be charged if caught. Open season on food.

The Strawberries were needle free, very sweet and are going down very fast.

That's tragic that someone would do something like that to try to affect other's lives and hurt someone else with no regard. And have such an effect like that on an entire industry too. Not sure I understand how the lady putting the needle in the banana was just warned. Here she would have been fried.

On a lighter note, 3 Dog Night made it out to Needles @ the 0:54 second mark in this song...

Another example of bad behavior being made acceptable. The 55 year old woman should have been arrested, tried, and punished, whether a stiff fine and/or a jail sentence. As you say, open season for all to copy.

Every day on the local news, all kinds of situations that bad behavior is accepted. It reminds me of the old Adam West "Batman" TV series from 1966. There was an episode where the Penguin was police commissioner, and it showed the police officers giving out parking tickets, jaywalking citations, etc. while criminals were robbing banks and mugging citizens. That was OK.

They had one person cold and let them go, as far as I am concerned they have now told all the idiots capable of doing this it is OK and you will not be charged if caught. Open season on food.

The Strawberries were needle free, very sweet and are going down very fast.

Unfortunately this is now reality, they seem to take on the easy marks and forget about the hardened criminals. Reading this week about an English court releasing a man on a warning, he had over 400 previous offences where he had fronted court, why the hell was he walking free in the first place.

Way down under in (not New Orleans) Australia.

Living the dream.

See you guys down the road somewhere if I can find some wifi. Leaving early and will try to get down to Provo tomorrow night. Then on to Zion and Bryce and Moab and Monument Valley and Page and Grand Canyon and Sun City to check on my folks. Mrs. scotee is getting a much deserved vacay. Road trip baby! We'll be pushing the "Hippie Van" down the hi way team driving style. Well maybe little wheels turning ;)
