I CANT CHIP!!!!!!!! Please help with basics

Recommended Posts

Years ago I watched The Truth About Golf instruction video by AJ Bonar and I just got more confused about golf swing after watching it. However it did give me one short game technique that really helped a hacker tremendously. He advocated chipping with a mid to short iron, 6, 7, or 8, depending on the amount of fly vs roll needed for the shot. You put the toe down slightly for smoother contact and just make a putting motion. The goal is to get the ball rolling on the green as soon as possible.

I suspect a similar technique has already been posted in the thread but I think it deserves another mention because how easy it is for those who do not get to practice much and have developed problem with making solid contact in chipping.

A big game

Changer for me recently

Was not wearing a

Glove for chipping or pitching. Now I can feel the club in my hands better and have more

Touch and consistency. Try it and see if it helps.

Ahh good question the answer lies in club selection. For sw and lob wedge I find it's mandatory to use a rotary body complete swing motion along with hinge and hold otherwise it's all hand and you flub it. For stiffer pitches I use less loft and less body rotation on an outside approach with level shoulders to nip with and get spin.

watch this it helpes me now and again I simply watch it over and over again. Use Seves tips and micklesons straight back straight through hinge and hold approach and you cant lose.

Absolutely! The whole short game video can help a beginner or anyone struggling with their short game. But the part about chipping or putting with loft is one of the best chipping videos ever made. It's not super sexy but it damn sure works.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

i suffered the chipping yips all of 2016 and 1/2 of 2017..

One Day I holed a chip for the first time in 5 years and now I can chip with the best of them. I use my 52 for everything. Ball in back shaft up and down hands slightly ahead - As long as I TURN MY ENTIRE UPPER Body I can chip great. When I get handys, armys, .... I decel and I'm dead

Agree. Even the softest touch chip requires some degree of shoulder turn. And those supersoft little open face fluff chips require even more shoulder turn.

I do the same sort of thing.

A "chip-putt". I putt with an 8 iron in my hand. It's been money for me around the greens.

Here's Brian Sparks demonstrating:

I do the same thing. I take a flinch or a stab if I look at the ball. My chipping is much much smoother if I look about 4" in front of the ball. I concentrate on a slow smooth stroke through the spot I am looking at. Too much emphasis on technique and how to use hands and body and ball position. Its all too much. You know where the hole is, you know where the ball is, just hit it to the hole with a slow smooth stroke.

BTW - for me. Looking at the spot in front of the ball and a SLOW stroke is key!! The feeling/thought of accelerating through the ball is death!

Probably been stated already, but I watched Phil's hinge and hold video about 20 times. Trying to get that hands forward feel is tough. But he makes it as simple as it can be. I used to dread chipping, but look forward to it now because I know I'm gonna hit a good shot.

I pretty much use my 54 degree wedge for everything. Feet together, ball in between them. I normally chip with the face square, and just hit it aggressively.

90% of the time I chip with the face square, and modulate distance with swing speed.

If I have a tight chip then I'll open the face to pop it up high and short, but mostly square to let it run.
