Best Golf App to measure club distances at driving range?

Recommended Posts

I find I have less time to play but can get to a driving range periodically. I have a few hybrid / driving iron / fairway woods that I would like to compare. I don't need stats like GIR etc and I have a GPS watch which works fine when I play. I was looking at the new Arcos 360 but am wondering if anyone out there had any thoughts / recommendations?

Thank you

Unless you plan on walking out to your ball on the range, nothing will suit you. Only shooting it with a laser works, and at a range I'd recommend a tripod if you're going to get any good data.

All of the GPS systems rely on you doing something next to the ball, before and after the shot. That's how GPS works.

If you use a radar device, it'll track your departing ball speed, but it only does math after that.

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

I don't think that is quite true! As far as I know a doppler radar based LM like Trackman or Flightscope will track the complete flight while a camera based one like the GC2 or SkyTrak will only track the departing ball speed/spin etc and calculate the rest.

That does not mean that Trackman or Flightscope are not calculating some of the numbers but the ball flight is tracked (unless you use it indoors, then it will calculate the flight).

Well, ya. The OP was discussing $300 solutions, not $20,000 launch monitors. From what I understand about TM/FS is that it will track, but it's overall distance is limited in what it can see. Obviously the longer you have the original vector, the more accurate the entire trajectory is tracked. When I was talking about a radar device, I was talking about the ones that don't cost the same as a car. :)

Ah I see you mean the VoiceCaddie SC 100/200. I agree, complete rubbish. They only measure the speed of the ball (not even the launch angle - you have to specify which club you use and they calculate it based on that). I've tried the SC200 and sent it back after one day. The distance that thing gave me was about as useful as a random number generator.

Try the Ranger app. I use it when I arrive at the range to find out how far each stick/pen is from my current location. Free and works great.

Thanks for posting about this app. Installed it on my iPhone 6S Plus; it works great and is easy to use. Seems to be very accurate as well.

Pretty simple........open the app when you are on the range, it does require location services to be enabled for the app to work. You can enable/disable for the Ranger app in Settings.

Not sure which earth map Ranger uses but the GPS will locate your phone and show its location on the displayed map. If needed, you can zoom in/out to better see a target but you simply drag the "bullseye" over your target and the app displays the yardage. When you change clubs you pick the new target, reposition the bullseye and the yardage displayed will change.

Getting distances on the range seems pointless

The Arccos system is Playing Condition information, it takes into consideration the elevation change,

the weather (wind, temp) and takes out various out of the ordinary shots. The averages are quite good.

Real time on course data. I personally hit the ball great on the range

and not so great while playing. If you sign up for the “Caddie” version, it uses Ai

to give you on course recommendations for strategy and club selection.

So let me get this straight. You get an app on your phone that shows a satellite map of the driving range. You eyeball that 5-iron shot you just hit and say, "I think it landed just short of that hump that's to the left of the red flag" and poke around on the satellite map to come up with "177 yards" so that's your yardage with your 5-iron.

No way. That's a high-tech equivalent to the old, "Dude, you flew that one MILES past the 160 flag. Bet it went 175-180 at least!".

Some things are just designed for lasers.

yes, assuming of course you actually have a clear target to shoot. How good you are at judging where your ball landed relative to that target is a completely different problem. Most of my range work is done on a range with a gradual up slope. Almost impossible to get any accurate judgment of that. On another range I'll occasionally use, the tees are elevated to a much more level surface - so it's much easier.

Not to split hairs, but if you can't get the number with a laser on a "gradual up slope" landing area, how will it be done with the gps?

Most of the ranges I've visited have stationary yardage signs (usually proven wrong with my laser) or flags, or some other 3 dimensional target which is easily shot. (Nellis AFB has a tank) :golfer:

I never said or even implied that it could. I wouldn't even think of trying to use GPS on the range much less advocate it.

W/o using a full blown LM, the laser's the best IMO - but even it has some limitations that people might want to be aware of before spending any money on one.
