I'm really enjoying this. I think Dan Hicks comment about today almost having a Ryder Cup kind of vibe was spot on. That being said, I think setting up the driveable par 4 would have been more interesting in yesterday's conditions.

When ever you get no wind and soft greens on a links course it's going to be taken apart

 

This is correct. You can't set up a Open course like a US Open. If the wind picked up the course would be unplayable. The Open is so much about the weather. Good weather will always mean goodnscores on almost any of the courses in the rota.

 

The greens will always be slower and the rough is what it is that year. If it rains then it will play softer.

 

I agree with all of this; however you can still do certain things to make the course play tougher and closer to major championship standards... more difficult hole locations, max out the distance, shave the greens a little tighter than usual, make them put a Johnny Miller 2 iron in the bag, etc.

 

Of course you could. My guess is the R&A wanted to see some low scoring today. Just for the fun of it. Tomorrow will be more of a grind.

Yep. And yet they continue to do it even though they are wrong far more often then they are right. Will never understand the thought process that these people employ. Or maybe I should say a "lack" of thought process?
