Should I be playing easier to hit irons?

Get a set of used "ugly" AP1's - the ones from 2012 - the 712 models - should be inexpensive. Make sure you get a shaft flex that works for you. You will find out how easy the game can be with game improvement clubs.

I play 716 ap1 that I picked up used 2yrs ago and they make the game fun.

If looking for new, bridgestone j15 dpf's should give you the look you seek at address. If you are ok with used, the j40 dpc's are something to look at.

Here is my approach to answer your question OP.

 

1) Do some research online and compile a list of irons or clubs that you may possibly like, read all the reviews, watch youtube videos, get some prices etc and write it all down.

2) Find a actual place that can offer a outdoor fitting service so you can actually see the shots you hit, instead of some big indoor simulator.

3) Try the clubs on your list plus listen to what the guy fitting you says. If you have a rough baseline of what you want the fitter can work around it with you and find a deadly set up for you.

4) See the results and pull the trigger on ordering your custom fitted set.

 

I went and got fitted 3 years ago for the first time, and I had previously been gaming some Adams CB2 irons that I got off the shelf but my swing was always changing as I was having lessons and improving my swing. The loft and lie angle of all my clubs was so out of whack where my swing plane was changing.But I knew going into my fitting I had roughly 4 models to chose from (M2 irons, M2 Tour Irons, PSI and PSI Tour Irons) and the M2 was fun to hit as they are strong lofted clubs but I just couldn't feel comfortable looking down at the M2 OR M2 Tour head, and I then Tried the PSI and PSI Tour irons and then I fell in love lol, with the PSI Tours. And we discovered that for my swing my 4i-6i are 2* upright and my 7i-PW are 1* upright and KBS TOUR 105 (S) which gave me the best results.

Yes. Unless you are an amazing, consistent ball striker the. Use cavity backs.

I'm pleased with my AP1s but let me get this straight, there are golfers who so prefer the way that a club looks/feels, that they will accept turning in higher scores than they need to? That makes little sense to me.

 

If a forged blade is easier to work then fine, that means it's performing better but at OP's level of the game, I don't know why this is something to ponder much about.

I consider myself very tolerant iro how a club looks but admit there are some designs I just could not purchase.

Nah, but you got to admit the market now allows a person to find something that is pleasing to their eye and they hit well instead of something they hit well and hate to look at.

I golf regularly with 5 other guys. 4 out 5 of them believe (only one admits it) that if the product is not heavily advertised and used by pros, it must be inferior. I usually chuckle and save some of my money.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I have a bit of bias as well. However, I never allow myself to buy into the oem's marketing bs on their new stuff which costs way too much. Wait a year or 2, then maybe I'll bite at a far more reasonable price. Why should a golfer like me (14 capper) give a rat's a** what club(s) the pros are using ??

 

IMO, there alot of choices for amateur golfers and not just the major OEMs.

 

You mention Tour Edge (which I do like). They are known for their fw woods. Also, Mizuno is known for their irons. Why aren't they known for their drivers? I think we all know the answer and it's not because of them being inferior. Put the correct shaft in them and they'll go as far and straight as the others even though they don't have "jailbreak" or "ribcor" technology.
