Another gunpowder ground rules question. What do you do if you hit it into a mud pool in the middle of the fairway and can’t find it? There were a handful of those, especially on hole 3 before the water hazard.

City/fabb, correct me if I’m wrong, but if it’s known, certain, all playing partners, that the ball is in that area, should be a free drop just outside of that area.

They had some blue stakes up around the area if I remember to give it a clear definition of GUR.

I went there this afternoon, and just emailed City a report. There are spots like that on 1 and 3, but otherwise the course was normal (for GPow).

 

They had blue stakes on 1. I didnt really take it as GUR (though it should be), rather I thought it was just to keep carts out. They had blue stakes on 3 as well, but it wasnt enclosed, just a line.

Match play, so no field to protect. What does that mean? If you can come to an agreement with your opponents, cool.

For “Known Virtually Certain” to be put into effect, you have to be 99% about it. Typically, that means seeing it land. It can’t just disappear over a ridge and you say, “It *SHOULD* be around here somewhere.”

 

However, with the kinder, gentler City in effect, I have no idea anymore.

I'm not sure that ground is actually GUR. You don't get free relief from mud or cart tracks. Again, I thought it was just stakes to keep carts out of a soggy spot where they were getting stuck. In my personal opinion from what I saw today, the spot on #1 should be called GUR, but the spot on #3 is fine enough for GPow. The course and/or City need to make that call though.

 

If it gets called GUR, you have to be virtually certain that your ball is lost in it. On #1, I'd say it's messy enough that it's possible to lose a ball in it, but you can very clearly see the area from the tee box. If you pop it up about 170 yards left, everyone will probably see your ball splat in the pit. On #3, I'd say it's both not possible to plug in (firmer than on #1), and it's also blind so you can't see it from the tee box. Since I'm playing against you HBD, you can be virtually certain I won't be giving you a favorable ruling on #3 :).

I should go there more often. I know the course well enough now that its not really a scouting trip.

 

In 2.5 hours I played 15 holes, played up to 4 balls off the tee, for $14. A Laotian slowed me up on 7, so I skipped 9, 10, 11. It was like a country club experience, where Im not held up by people, and not worried about skipping a hole or few.

 

I think having no tee times helps for pace. Who wants to show up with a 4some when they dont have a time? There were a few singles and twosomes out there, but I didnt see a foursome.

I did it for club selection purposes. Only played the course one time. I’ve never played a round with less than 12 clubs. Couple that with no gps, I wanted some advance knowledge.
