i watched that "they shall not grow old" documentary (movie?) last night. It was excellent. It was the story of what it was like to be a british soldier in WWI. They used video from WWI that had been colorized, etc. and there was no 2018 narrator. The movie was narrated by using interviews the BBC conducted in the 60s and 70s of soldiers. They made it a high priority to tell the true story as best they could. It was distinctly politically agnostic and the british soldiers had a great deal of respect for the german soldiers. to them, they were all soldiers. It was not a gory film and yet there were many images of dead and disfigured soldiers. You can't tell the story without those pictures.

In preparation for seeing the movie i listened to a pretty interesting podcast with peter jackson. One regret he expressed was that he didn't think they had given the use of mustard gas quite enough priority in the film.

(hold that thought.)

after the credits there was a thirty minute special on how they made the movie. peter jackson ended it by saying that his goal was that people would ask their parents and grandparents for the stories they were told about the war. don't let those stories and experiences die.

(back to that thought on gas)

my dad grew up spending his summers cutting tobacco in st marys county. last night after the movie he told me how his great uncle had all sorts of phyical issues ... specifically as a result of being gased in WWI. i had never heard the story before.

Speaking of obsessing over the weather:

ahoop and I are headed to Wisconsin in May. two days of 36 at Sand Valley, 36 at Lawsonia, 18 at Erin Hills.

Fingers crossed for (edit: SIGNIFICANT) global warming, just this winter, just in Wisconsin.

You could get lucky, you never know. My caddie at EH says its always a crapshoot early in May or late in September.

I think they started a lower greens fee early in the year starting next year? Definitely a great idea.

Guys like us (most of us reading this, not just me and ahoop) have a much higher tolerance when it comes to weather. I'm not worried about the temperature really. Average high in the 60's in May.

If they have temporary greens like they did this year, that will bum me out. We will have some time to evaluate once the resort opens in the event of a bad winter.

Yeah I was talking about the opening day/s being in May not necessarily the temps.

I started watching a war documentary on Flix all about the history of tank warfare. It was good. I watched 2 eps. Need to finish.

Mustard gas was sick, but what it did to your bone marrow and blood cell production set the stage for chemotherapy treatments.

So, we can all blame your uncle for keeping domes around.

Speaking of mustard (and) gas, we have our department white elephant gift exchange/luncheon today. Chick fil a was the chosen caterer. I'm booking this as a win. Usually whenever we get food, it's terrible Panera.

For the gift, our limit was $5 and it's kind of hard to find a decent, non POS gift for someone. So I was at Walgreens and was going to grab a few bags of Haribo gummy bears as a gift until I walked past some Black Box mini wine boxes for $4.99. I grabbed a Rose and called it a day. It's like a box of Hi-C for adults. Genius.

Pretty good chance I'll try to get my own gift. I'm thinking most people went with scratch off lottery tickets and gift cards to Starbucks.

Fritz also invented the process by which we make fertilizer today, which helps feed billions of people. So he's probably on the net positive side in the grand scheme of things.

It's classic German maths.

A German soldier is on a hunt, when his quarry appears. A rabbit scampering about, at a reasonable range of 10 yards. He takes two shots, one hitting several feet in front of the rabbit and the other landing several feet behind the rabbit. He proceeds to grin like a child.

His hunting partner raises an eyebrow. "Hans, what pleases you? You missed."

Hans laughs and says "Nein! On average, zee rabbit is dead!"

Pretty cool thread here:

http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1723062-how-much-bs-are-we-being-fed-by-the-big-brands/

Basically someone 3D printed a driver head using ABS for his wife and put on a $40 shaft. Works great. It does make you wonder about every item of new equipment being pushed towards consumers.

Is THDC our resident 3D printing guru? Someone has to be able to make their own club head like this in our group to try out.

IMPORTANT: are there any equivalents to omaha steaks that anyone has used with good success?

thanks!!

Gotta be beef/steaks, or some kind of food delivery in general?

Steaks. I thought about G and M crab cakes.

I get this in the company mail on occasion: https://www.kansascitysteaks.com/ Have not used, assume its just an Omaha Steaks knockoff.

Crabcake Factory in Ocean City ships as well if you want crabcakes. I've had great success with Edible Arrangements if you have a franchise nearby- great to send to customers or people in the hospital, etc. Never have any problems and people love them.

Hive Tour Titles: 0
Capitol Cup Singles Record: Undefeated.
Suck it, Ceejay.

We've got enough engineers in here to be able to create the design for and print a Hive-branded driver. USGA COR limits be damned. All Hive-branded 3d printed equipment is permissible at Hive events.

GTT: Let's assume that davechen gets off his a** and creates a set of 3d printed clubs for you that are incredibly illegal per the USGA but will drop 10 strokes off your score. You can use them in Hive events. Will you use them?

ABSOLUTELY

How about a Hive event where everyone has to use these 3D printed clubs.

I'm a mechanical engineer that works on software, and hasn't done any mechanical engineering in a long time.

Sully makes spreadsheets for a living.

I think Goose is our only hope for a Hive 3D printed driver.

I forgot THDC. He's got a PHD in something impressive, but can't keep an accurate golf score.

We're counting on you, Goose.

Interesting. At first I was thinking that face would cave in, but it's a solid head, ala old-school woods. It doesn't look like a low end, consumer printer. Too high resolution. And the shininess looks like some sort of finish or after coat.

I thought about printing a putter, just for the shiggles, but my innate laziness could not be overcome.
