Okay, just signed up for several tournaments for the year. Let's hear what YOU are going to play in this year!! :-)

SCGA Am Qualifier

SCGA Mid-Am Qualifier

SCGA Foursomes

California AM Qualifier

Saved date for U.S. Mid-Am Qualifier

Saved date for U.S. Senior Open Qualifier

Saved date for Kelly Cup (my favorite tournament of the year)

Saved date for The Macbeth (my favorite team invitational)

Saved date for The Cravens (the coolest, most well-run amateur tournament ever. Net, alternate-shot match play. Just an amazing tournament: https://vimeo.com/276639541

When I do my qualifiers, I usually choose one of three courses: Rustic Canyon, Goose Creek, Oak Valley. I know them all fairly well. Choosing a course that fits your game and that you are comfortable on is key to qualifying for big events.

Let's hear it, guys. What are you playing in??? :-)

You guys are lucky this year, all the CA Mid Am and Am USGA qualifiers are in SoCal....closest I could find was Santa Barbara!

That doesn't make any sense. They always have them in Northern California and Southern California. And there is no California mid-am.

I will get you a list of the Norcal qualifiers shortly. P.m. me if you don't hear from me in a day or two.

I meant the California qualifying sites for the Mid Am and Am. I was on the USGA site at the weekend and checked them all. Maybe they will change.

Yeah, it's a commitment. If you are a person of modest means, you have to make sacrifices to play tournament golf for sure. But it's very rewarding if you make the commitment and can improve your game to the point where you can compete.

For the USGA Mid-Am, what yardages are the courses usually set up at for qualifying?

Near me they tend to set them up somewhere in the 6700 yard range. They have a large field to get through and so they don't want people to take too long. It also depends where it is. If the courses are big enough to take it they'll make them longer.

They then take some of the short par 5s and play them as par 4s. Doesn't make a difference to the score you shoot but mentally can change things if you feel you now need to make par (4).

Completely depends on the venue, though. We have hosted several US Mid-Am qualifiers at my home course and we played them at about 7000. The course is 7200 from the tips. Definitely varies. :-)

I highly recommend trying to qualify for the SCGA Amateur this year. Championship is at Lakeside Golf Club, which is a very special place.

My tentative schedule. A lot of limiting factors for me money, my current game and if my lady will let me play LOL

Jim Lathum Salinas City Amateur

Alameda Commuters

California Amateur Championship Qual – San Jose Country Club

Santa Clara County – San Jose County Club

San Jose City – Santa Teresa

NCGA Amateur Stroke Play Qual – Coyote Creek/Monarch

US Amateur - Qualifying at Castlewood

NCGA Amateur Match Play Qual – Monarch Bay

NCGA Pub Links qualifying – Metropolitan

Mid Amateur - Qualifying at Almaden

Mountain View City – Shoreline Golf Links

Tony Lema Championship – Monarch Bay Golf Club

My game isn't so hot right now, I am struggling to shoot low in casual rounds, which makes me hesitant to "waste" my money on applying to a bunch of tourneys (for sure will do the qualifiers, maybe not so much the city stuff)

I've been working pretty hard though on more "focused" practice , so we will see.... I am hopeful lol

Everything is now on hold for me, even practice!

I slipped on ice on Friday and whilst it was very nice of my laptop to break my fall it also meant that it went digging into my ribs fracturing them. Complete disaster! Never broken anything before now. Plenty of tendon problems but no breaks. I was lined up for a few range sessions over the next week and then a lesson to see where I am at with everything the week after.

Ouch. Sorry to hear. Take care of yourself and completely heal before getting rambunctious with the golf swing again. Lots of forces reacted out in the rib cage during a swing.

Question..... Is it typically OK to play in a state open for another state? As in, I live in NY and am looking at tournaments run by NJ and CT based golf associations. Is it as simple as signing up and paying for an additional GHIN in that state? Or is this frowned upon?

My area is blessed with a lot of tournaments but some other states and other golf associations tournament dates/locations may be better for me than my own area/state.

Thanks
