PM19 lob wedge is legit

For those of you playing this club... Do you use it for full shots? How is the ball flight, is the ball flight low like the TM Hightoe wedge? Or does it produce a higher flight like more conventional lob wedge?

 

I'm a big fan of the original PM. Flight on longer shots is definitely lower than a traditional wedge, but spin is very high. It looks funky, but the thing flat out performs for me.

I use it for full shots. The flight may be a touch lower, with slightly less spin but not a dramatic difference by any means.

I find both the PM and PM '19 to be lower launching that similarly lofted "traditionally" shaped wedges, and I would assume that the Hi-Toe is much the same, although I have never hit one.

How does the late bounce on the 19 version compare to the og? I found the og difficult to use on square face fullish shots.

Check my original post. Hated original on full square face shots and love the new version. Now has the best of both worlds in my humble opinion.

I've had the opportunity to use mine for the past couple of weeks. I loved the original PM Grind, it has been my favorite wedge ever. I have been playing the 60 and 56 degree.

Callaway sent me the 2019 60 and 56.

I requested the same shaft as the original which is the KBS Tour V wedge shaft, so I can't speak for the Hi Rev stock shaft, but it gives me a good comparison to the original PM grind.

 

They say that there is more offset in the new model. What I see, looking down on them is that there is more of a kink where the hosel joins with the clubhead, but the leading edge seems to be at least as far forward as on the original. It's like they added offset, but added extra space for an extra groove on the leading edge. Looking down on the club behind the ball, the leading edge is more round and pronounced. The face seems a bit larger and the high toe a bit more high. There are 18 grooves on the original and 19 on the 2019.

 

Obviously the look and feel are still quite similar as are the results.

The 2019 seems to have a slightly softer feel on similarly struck shots.

 

The biggest difference that I have found is due to the difference in the hosel and leading edge. The extra offset makes me want to put my hands further forward. But, when my hands are forward, the leading edge is lower to the ground and wants to dig. Hitting shots with the 2019 vs the original side by side, I had a lot of chip shots where the leading edge caught the ground as I hit the ball and just stuck in the turf. If you struggle with hitting your chips and pitches fat, you will have to open the blade or be very conscious about how you use the bounce on this club. I live in the Pacific NW and right now courses are soft, I am noticeably affected by the leading edge. I am not generally a digger, but I have taken a few mammoth divots.

 

In the sand, this club is every bit as good as the original if not better. I open my wedges wide in the sand and let them glide under the ball. When this club is open, it's not going to dig, but it really glides at least as easily through the sand.

 

All in all, the new 2019 might be a little better suited for more firm conditions. While I love the look, the extra offset and the feel, I am moderately concerned with the leading edge being a little too forward and abrupt. I am actually contemplating grinding the leading edge to "dull" it a bit. I did this with a cleveland wedge years ago that had a sharp leading edge.

 

I am going to give it a little longer to see how I react to the change in the leading edge and make a decision in the near future if I am going to grind it a little or leave it alone.

I think it's a great next step in the series for people who play in firm conditions, but check out the leading edge and how you react to it before you buy.

Just got the 54 degree after having tried the 58. Was a little hesitant for full shots because I struggled with last years models on full shots. Not on these. They are fantastic and won't be going anywhere. I want them to make a 50 degree or at least a 52 that I can bend

This is good news. I find when I full swing my 64 I have to strike it so perfect to get the proper distance/trajectory with it. I may have to look into the 19 version and see if it is more consistent on full swing shots.

I just recently got a PM 56 - 14 and replaced a Ping Glide 2.0 Stealth 56 - 12. I had also used a MD4 54 - 12. I've used all three as sand wedges, but also as a lob wedge. I played a couple rounds with the PM56 and found that it is extremely flexible. I had no problem using it out of the sand and around the greens for short pitches, but I really found it easy to lay flat and use as a lob wedge. Full shots were no problem and I didn't have any issues with it digging in. I can use any of these clubs, but I think the PM provides a level of flexibility that the Ping and MD4 do not.

 

And while I didn't get a chance to test it on LM, it seemed obvious that the spin numbers were up when using the PM.

PM Grinds are awesome, I put my 58 in the 'warehouse' and bought 56 and 60s...perfect wedge for sand, fairway, rough, hardpan. Waiting for the HiToe fans to dispute :taunt:

That's interesting that you said you use the 56 as a lob wedge. I originally got the 56 and fell in love with it, but my standard set up is 54/58. However, I felt like I would never have any issues with getting the ball in the air with the 56, so I'm contemplating going 54/56. Just seems crazy, so i'm hesitant

This is great, I am re tooling the entire bag after getting the urge to get back into competitive golf (coming from an 8 club bag).

 

I am playing Titleist 710mbs, so the ps sits at 47. I am considering going 54 and 60 in the PM grind.

 

My concern is that I play in Tampa, so I can have soggy conditions from time to time. Typically, I have been surprised how tight some of the lies can be, and I am coming here from Vegas (so I get tight lies). I play the bulk of my short game shots with a slightly to primarily open face.

 

Do u folks think that I will run into an issue with the bounces being unplayable? I have an extra spot in the bag, but I feel as though 64 is a bit of reach for my ability level, but I like the shape of these things.

 

Also, I think I'm gonna let them sit in some CLR to try and dull up the finish a bit, maybe promote a bit of rust on these bad boys. Think that would work?

I really wanted to like these despite the clicky feel but I swear I have never shanked so many wedge shots in one round. Now, this isnt something new as for some reason I get prone to wedge shanks when I try to go full swing with them but damn it ruined my whole round. I'm moving on and going back to Vokey which is where I always end up when I try other wedges.

I just did a fitting for wedges. I can hit a 3/4 56 degree pretty reliably, so I don't need a lob wedge for anything other than playing out of the rough around the greens, short-sided shots, and bunkers. The fitter and I decided that the PM19 made sense as a "specialty club" in my bag for those purposes, not to use as a full shot club off the fairway.

For those of you on the fence on loft (56, 60, etc) I would highly recommend the 58 as a versatile lob wedge. While fill shots can take some getting used to these wedges are dream to play sittling slightly to wide open. As I play it open so often I don’t see the need for any more loft than 58. I can hit pretty much any short sided flop necessary with this wedge and have confidence to go after it also. That said you can play ball back, hands a bit forward and play a more standard SW type shot too if needed.

 

So versatile. Love it!
