My 2023 minimal bag experiment: D, 5W, 5i, 7i, 9i, GW, SW, P.  Driver at 9*, then 8 degree gaps between the rest starting with 5W at 18. Figured I had to keep all the heads black too.

DBM Forged are so good.  I put them back in the bag, they're better than the TS3 for me.

I posted here a few years ago as a beginner and have continued the minamilist golf journey. Have now gone from 9 clubs to 8 clubs and gone from a stand bag to a lighter single strap bag for the summer.

Currently carrying:

Yonex XPG Type HD driver 10.5° - Carry 225 yards

Wilson FG Tour M3 Hybrid 21° - Carry 180-160 yards

Benross Evolution R 6 Iron 26° - Carry 140-160 yards

Benross Evolution R 8 Iron 34.5° - Carry 120-140 yards

Benross Evolution R PW 44° - Carry 105-120 yards

Benross Rev Wedge 50° 8° Bounce - Carry <105 yards (all chipping off tight lies)

Benross Rev Wedge 56° 12° Bounce - Carry <80 yards (bunkers and rough that need a bit more bounce)

Odyssey Versa 7 Works Tank 38" Counterbalanced Putter (I dislike carrying this with the additional head weight, shaft weight and longer grip however i cannot deny that i put miles better with this than my more traditional Wilson 8881 Blk blade putter)

I started work near a golf course earlier this year. Threw together this bag for those post work 9's.

Yonex eZone 420 10* - Fujikura Motore Speeder VC 7.0

Titleist 712 AP2 4/6/8/PW - DG S300

Titleist 254.14 - DG S400

Titleist OG SM 260.04 - DG S400

Scotty Cameron Circa '62 #6

I usually test different golf balls when I play after work; currently testing the Chrome Soft X and X LS balls.

I more often than not play exclusively half sets. My sets swap very frequently, but recently have been finding that I play this set up more than usual.

I present to you: My-minimalist-set-up-with-irons-I-have-no-right-playing-but-do-anyway-because-they're-pretty

G10 10.5°

M2 3HY 19°

Srixon Z945 6,8,PW

Srixon I302 Sand Wedge

Scotty Cam Select GoLo

I do have a Srixon AD hybrid, toying with the idea of finding a old Srixon driver on the cheap and a Srixon putter to make the half set a one-brander.

Anyone got recommendations for the driver?

I get the whole minimalist thing if you're walking or playing an executive style course, but the game is so much easier when you can take a normal swing most of the time. I applaude you guys through. Playing a 20 yard+ gap in your irons with feel is something to be proud of.

I don't really care about my score.  It's more about enjoying the game and toting around a VERY light setup makes the walk so much more enjoyable.  The shot/swing is very much secondary.

My minimalist WITB from a round I played yesterday afternoon. It was my first round in a while, plus it was a warmish day (it is summer in NZ) so I wanted to keep the bag simple and light.

Yeah, they're all oldies (but goodies).

Here is my tentative WITB to finish up 2023 and start off 2024. This past year I was able to play a lot of golf and 100% of my rounds were played with 8 clubs or less; I played with as few as few as 5. Currently, my bag is at 8 clubs. I have said on other threads that I can play just as well with 5 clubs, but one of my goals is for 2024 is to be a single digit handicap and that will be way more doable with 8 in the bag. My 2024 bag consists of:

Driver- Titleist 913 D2

5 wood- Taylormade V-steel

4, 6, 8, PW- Mizuno MP-53

56*- old worn out Maxfli that I just can’t get rid of

Putter- PING Zing 2i

Ball- Kirkland Signature

Bag- Koger small

So far it’s great. So far I’ve only played 1 round with it, but it seems like it will last a very long time. I think I’m near the club limit with midsize grips, the lager size would be better for more than 8 clubs. For me it’s perfect though.

Glad to hear. Looking forward to a comparison when you have had a bit more time with it 🙂

I was keeping an eye on one on eBay a month or 2 ago and also have the same Sweetens scorecard keeper. Wild!

Like many have already said its about having fun, which I stopped having long ago now when i was pushing a bag full of clubs I didn't use....ever. I don't think I hit my 5 iron in years 🤣

I got into minimalist golf by this site when I was recovering from an operation. Just read the replies of why, and I just thought these guys are doing what I'm searching for....and since then ive enjoyed the adventure of it all.....plus my 456 iron go same distance so I ditched 2 of them and went with the one I liked hitting most. Plus the main reason....I love golf and I enjoying carrying so much more

I think I've put together my minimalist bag for 2024. I'm going with 9 clubs to start but will try to get to 8 or maybe even 7 if the experiment goes well. The clubs pictured are going in a Penfold Heritage Sunday bag which is actually a pretty decent bag for the money. It sort of makes me want to buy a MacKenzie, but perhaps this summer...

The Cameron Laguna had been with me since I bought it in 1996 or 1997.  I need to find some headcovers before the weather warms up.

Glad to see another Laguna out there!

I love how that green / white penfold bag looks. But I have too much concern about how the white will color over time.  Would love to hear back down the line if my concern was of any merit.

2024 Bag Set Up:

D - Mavrik 10.5*

DI - Haywood 17*

7W - Sub70 21*

4i - Geom CB 21*

6i - Geom CB 29*

8i - Geom MB 37*

PW - Geom MB 45*

GW - Geom 53*

SW - Geom 57*

P - Haywood

The 7w is kinda pointless, and not necessary for a minimal bag but I like it and want to get better with it. Could honestly kick out both woods since I use the DI off the tee a majority of the time right now.

You’re one club over the limit… 😉

What happened to your Sub 70 Sycamore putter? Thoughts on it?

Ha, I'd probably score better if I just dropped both the 7w and 4i, and if I'm being honest, the driver.  I really like the 007. The weight feels nice, its easy to line up, and doesn't feel any less forgiving than the bigger Haywood I'm using now.   The problem is, I'm dumb and like the color coordination so it stays in the bag with black iron/wedge heads.
