cleveland CG14 52 deg or Scratch 58 deg.

Just started the half set journey last season and I am hooked. I didn’t quite get along with the single strap life as I like the stand… which I discovered after getting a ping moon light.

my question is with wedge gapping. PW is 48deg than I can either go with a 52 or 58 that I have laying around. Is 52 too strong to finish my bag with? Should I bend it to 54? Or bend a 58 to 56. I think I am hung up on the idea of a “100 yard club” which would be 55-56 deg for me.

hope that was somewhat coherent.

I had that problem or head ache....I don't hit the ball as far as that but I need a 100 yard stick....which in the end was a 50 degree gap wedge. I also bent a my 6 & 8 irons 2 degrees up to be more traditional lofts which I prefer

Glad to know that my 100 yard club thought wasn’t profound. Ya I’m leaning to bending my 52 weaker to 54. Just need to avoid deep bunkers I suppose.  Cheers!

Talking about deep bunkers, I'm finally getting to play st Andrews next year.....been postponed 12 months. But after being there many times (my wife was at university there) I'm finally going to walk the hallowed turf......I'm actually going to aim for the roadhole bunker 🤣 Might need a 76 degree wedge

Well a half self would only seem right. As for the strategy for the road hole …. “That’s a bold move Cotton, let see how it plays out for him”

I'm a 14 club player, but I do like to occasionally take out a small set with a carry bag on a sunny afternoon like today, usually with this setup:

G400 Max, PXG 22 Hybrid, i210 5, 7, 9, U, CBX2 58, Newport 2.5. Carried in an original Jones stand bag.

This setup isn't too far off the half set I got as a kid in the 90's when I first learnt to play golf. Good memories.

Nice set!! I've got a G400 Max on the way for delivery this week, took me forever to find one for a good price.  People really love that driver to this day, they sure hold their value!

Wollongong near Sydney, Australia. We've got 5 holes right along the beach, when the conditions are right there is really good pipe style a-frames right out the front. Great to watch while you're walking the course!

Was messing around in the shop last night and found a partial set of Mac 985 Tourney Custom irons a fellow WRXer sent me some time back. Frankly due to my circumstances of memory loss I had forgotten all about them. They are 5 7 and 8 irons. I can do some minor tweaking on lofts and they will be a great basis for a short set. I am thinking of combining them With a 54 Mac Cloverleaf persimmon 2 wood which I can hit off the tee or deck. Wedge wise I am thinking 52* Vokey 252 series or a Mac CF VFQ 50*--- Putter I am deciding on since I have so many. I can throw in one of my numerous Ironmasters and make it an all Mac bag or I am leaning towards a Wilson Augusta or maybe one of my numerous Bulls Eyes. Yep when I do the minimalist thing I do it vintage style. Yep looks like rain and storms the next 3 days for us so shop time. When I play minimalist I do the best I can with what I have and like the challenge of being creative. In this case score means absolutely nothing.

The last time I played ok was with six of these seven clubs. For a long time, I played with very few clubs. Coming back to the game after about a 7, or 8 year break, I made the mistake of thinking I would try a more orthodox approach. I should've just gone back to my screwed up ways. Oh, well...

From l to r, the 3iron and the 6iron are both TaylorMade rac HTs, the 8iron is a rac MB, the pw and the lw are both very old Snake Eyes. The putter is a Callaway Tuttle, and the driver is a Callaway FT9. There is 10 degrees between each club (excepting the putter). I think the bag is a Ping Moonlite II.
When playing with a minimal set, I've always had an odd thing about having different grips on each club. I wish I could say there was a golf related reason for that, but I'm afraid it's just some nutty weirdo thing.

Nothing really weird IMHO--- Different clubs have a different feel with certain grips. I have been known to do the exact same thing over the years. Look at my signature closely all my "woods" have different shafts

These old Jones bags with the small stand at the bottom are the best bags ever IMO. I wonder why manufacturers no longer make these bags with short legs on the bottom half of the bag.  They have great balance, are automatic, prop up the bag at a good angle, take up less space, and can be used on a push trolley without the legs getting in the way at the top.  The more modern Sunday bags with small stands tend to have them at the top where they are manual and set the bag up super low to the ground.

I have two of these, one with a single strap and one with two straps.  I do much prefer the version with two straps.  The design is such that it allows for a comfortable carrying experience whether you're using one or both straps.

Although they're a "small" bag, I have no issues carrying 14 with it either.  Usually very little to no club tangle.

I keep looking at the "new" Jones bags and they don't hit the spot for me.  From the hard plastic tops on some of them (just why), to the long legs... I think they're missing out on a lot that made these bags amazing.

I've always felt all clubs feel different anyway. With my full sets, I try to match everything up, including getting the wedges for the iron set, but it never seems to ever get to the point where the clubs feel enough alike.

Are your differing shafts in your woods by design, or is that how you got them and you just adapted?

I build a lot of my clubs. The driver that is a stock Honma shaft but it was tuned by a friend of mine. The 3 wood I found on the scrap pile when I worked for a metal recycling company but I theorize I may have built it when we had a golf shop. The 7 wood I built several years ago and that shaft was my go to shaft for years. The 9 wood I did have a real stiff UST 65 but it became too stiff for me. I had saved the original MAS shaft and put it back in on a whim and it worked.

Those v-steels are great, aren't they? I have a 3 and a 7. I haven't hit this 3iron much. I'll give it a solid chance, but if it doesn't work out, I'll replace it with the 7w.

Yep they are a cult classic and we have an unofficial V-Steel brotherhood on here. The 7 wood I have had ever since it was new
