Must play in Albuquerque

Potentially taking a road trip to Albuquerque in a couple of weeks and will be taking the sticks. Will have time to get 1-2 rounds in potentially. What are the must plays in Albuquerque?

The UNM Championship course is good. Conditioning can sometimes be spotty. Twin Warriors and Santa Ana in Bernalillo are both good courses with Twin being the higher end more dramatic while SA is a more friendly layout. Sandia is a resort course in town with nice views of Sandia peak. Most always in good shape and has very generous fairways. You could also try Isleta just south of ABQ. They have 3 nines that are pretty good and stay in fairly good shape. The only ABQ muni I would recommend is Arroyo del Oso. Parkland layout that is OK, but the greens tend to be spongy.

Well actually TripAdvisor was the only place I could find reviews and the two most recent ones (4 days and 3 weeks), both said the same thing. I can’t seem to find much information about the place at all and the website for the course is useless.

Raised the rates yet again trying to appeal to the luxury market, used to be able to play it for $45 in winter/ off peak now I think it’s closer to $200. Glad I got to play it many times, but UNM champions is fantastic so I won’t miss paa ko and their attempt to attract the pxg crowd lol

Shame to hear about Paako...I will try and get some info from the family to see if it is really that bad.

Does anyone know if the course itself is in bad shape at Paako or are people mainly just upset with the $200 cost (and no local rates)? Most reviews I am seeing seem to be upset with the price more than anything.

Pa Ko Ridge was the best in 2018. Would not consider it a must play. Cochiti is nice. Santa Ana is playable and enjoyable. Twin Warriors is overrated with plenty of blind shots. UNM is your typical Muni.

In no way am I bashing UNM. Layout is nice. Course conditioning is average. In my opinion it is not anywhere near a must play and I’m not sure there is in NM

Yea, no way is UNM like any muni I have played.

We visit every summer. I arrived last night and played Cochiti today. Love that place. Playing Black Mesa on Sat and heard great things from my partners today. TW on Sunday, Cochiti again Mon and maybe Sandia Tues. I’m coming back in Oct with a friend who’s never played and we are playing 36 each at Paako and TW, then doing Black Mesa and Cochiti same day. I wouldn’t pay $200 often to play Paako, but it’s absolutely worth it when you consider the cost to play someplace like Scottsdale.

 

I had a very bad experience at UNM and am unlikely to go back. My wife is an Aggie so that’s part of it ;-)
