Range Structure/Plans

What range session structure/plans and or tips for your juniors have you found to be most effective for progress and prevent mindless ball beating?

First we warm up hitting GW, 9-iron, 7-iron, 3W, Driver (3-5 swings per club). Then I use a random generator app on my phone that selects a number 1 and 12:

 

1=driver

2=3w

3=5w

4=don't have that club...hit same club again

5,6,7,8,9=corresponding iron

10=PW

11=GW

12=SW

 

Whatever number comes up we hit next.

Note: We can't break 40 lately so might be looking to change.

I remind my kid what he should try to do/achieve/fix before hitting every ball. It’s a lot of talking, but that’s the only way we can get something out of a session at the range.

Just had this issue with my son. He played well in a large tournament. For the next two weeks, he was on his own practicing/playing. The next time I saw him swing a club it was terrible. He swing was completely off. He didn't do a single drill or pay attention to what he was doing. He was just beating balls on the range and playing mindless on the course. Same thing on putting and chipping. No focus and it showed. He went on to play very poorly in the next event.

We had to have a talk about how important it is to have a purpose when practicing. Just beating balls on the range and putting mindlessly on the practice green is a waste of time. You are actually getting worse. Just being at the course means nothing. It is about the effort you put into your practice. He changed his ways and just posted an under par round.

Whatever you do...make sure you are doing it with a purpose or you will get worse.

Depends on what the goals of the session are. For instance if we want to change the grip we will focus on that for the session. Other times is just grooving everything together. Other times is a specific shot.

 

Hitting balls the same way all the time on a range will make you regress. When you see that happen change things up fast before bad habits creep in.

I like to play "holes" on the range. Start with a driver and act like it is a par 4, if the driver is good then you are rewarded with say, an 8 iron next, if the drive is bad, then you hit a long iron or hybrid next, then a wedge....next hole is maybe a 3 wood to start, then a short iron if a good drive/long iron if not, then next hole is a par 3 and start with an iron.

I think it is important to switch clubs often like you are playing.

Had a range rat in the house.

Play more hit balls less. If the course is empty. Put a ball in the bunker, deep rough. near the cart path, etc. See how many times he/she can get up and down.

Son played in 36 hole event. He got up and down 11 out of 19 times for the event. 50% on sand saves.
