What is the one rule you wish could be changed

No one here has given any strong rational defense for OB stroke and distance penalties. Esteemed writers and legendary and top players are against them. The majority of golfers ignores them. But keep going along with the groupthink here.

I have to say I don't think I've ever played with anyone who has simply ignored the OB rule, at least I can't recall any. Certainly I've seen people not return to the tee if their provisional(s) were unexpectedly lost or also OB but in such cases they've lost the hole, scored 0 points for Stableford or got DQ'd from stroke play (if they've been keeping score to begin with).

I'm also somewhat curious to know as to how it would be decided whether or not a ball truly is in an unplayable lie and the player is granted the right to take relief in stroke play if it wasn't at sole discretion of the player. I know the old rule for match play but in stroke play there's a field to protect and the process would need to be objective.

Also, no one is denying people the right to write their own set of rules. Be the change you want to see!

No. Nobody has a problem with people disagreeing. What people have a problem with is the fist slamming and the demanding of an explanation to counter an argument that isn't relevant, and the insistence that things are illogical when they really arent.

Why can't you actually answer the questions yourself? But I take it you mean a player wouldn't be allowed to deem a ball unplayable unless it was known or virtually certain a player wouldn't be able to move the ball with a stroke at it. That'll be a real treat because if you can move the ball at all 6 times out of 100 strokes, you couldn't deem it unplayable. It wouldn't take long for players to wish they had S&D at their disposal, even you when you've been waiting on the tee for an hour for the players ahead to get their balls back onto the fairway.

This isn’t that hard. If the ball is lodged against a tree or a big rock, its unplayable. If it is sitting in rough, it’s playable. You really are saying that you can’t tell the difference between a playable and unplayable ball?

I can't believe I'm saying this but since the 2019 rules revision I can't say there is anything pressing that I'd change. I really like the option of putting with the pin in as it definitely saved us time once everyone adopted it. Also like the new OB. Actually the OB plus 2 is exactly how our league played for the last 7 years. It was nice that the RBs finally caught up with us :)

I have seen balls in the rough that Tiger could advance but I could not advance. I have seen balls in the rough that I could advance but my wife could not advance. I have seen balls in the rough that I could safely hit but my 85 year old playing partner could not safely hit (fragile wrists).

So to answer your question - yes (or no, depending).

Sorry, not buying it. A ball in rough is a ball in rough. It’s not unplayable just due to thick rough. If your skills are such that all you can do is wedge it back to the fairway, then that is your play.

That doesn't require a rule of golf change. If you manage a course then just impose it as part of Pace of Play management.

Unplayable for me is not that same as unplayable for you. That's not a hard concept. It's costing you a stroke anyways, and most people know that it's better to try and advance the ball because if the ball is really bad, your relief area isn't going to be a h3ll of a lot better.

 

I rarely see people take unplayable lie relief, but like that it is an option, and I like that it is solely up to the player.
